What games with shitty reviews below 70 did you really enjoy?
To make it fair please mention games that got major improvements over time like No Man Sky or Sea of Thieves only if you played it in the release window.

Ryse: Son of Rome (60)
State of Decay 2 (66)
Secret Files: Tunguska (66)
Wanted: A Wild Western Adventure (66)
Mafia III (68)
Mad Max (69)

The original NieR on on PS3/360.

I passed on the game initially because of the reviews. Then as the word of mouth was so strong and after I heard a handful of tracks from the game I got it and it became one of my fav games of all time.

Reviews could have stopped the series in it's tracks but thankfully they came back with Automata and the Replicant re-release which have been huge hits.

Ryse and Mad Max didn't deserve that. They are decent games. I don't know I don't usually don't go just by metascore but I don't have favs, have I enjoyed some. Murdered Soul Suspect is one, it was different.
Metacritic is actually a disgrace, but so many players love it that it can't be ignored. Completely forgot about Murdered: Soul Suspect, wanted to try that one years ago.

This got only 67:
The lesser reviews there are the more bad ratings like the 42 hurt. Bet it would be 70+ without that one. One of the reasons why Metacritic sucks.

Sea of Thieves - Loved it from day1.
Mad Max - It's a bit on the repetitive side, but it plays great. Driving mechanics were top notch too.
The Ascent - So good
Crackdown 3 - It's more pure dumb fun than most open world action games that came out at around the same time.
Homefront: The Revolution
Elex - eurojank fast, but PB at their best, imho.
Recore - Loved the game, especially combat and challenges.
State of Decay 2 - I couldn't get into the first game, but this one did a lot of things right. Best zombie survival game.

Then there are a ton of pretty good games that didn't deserve such low scores like Scorn, Outward, We Happy Few, Gungrave G.O.R.E, Generation Zero, Recompile, The Falconeer, Ravenlok. If Lamplighters was a bit less glitched at launch it would have scored a whole lot better.

I also enjoyed Redfall (after the patches)

Damn, how could i overlook State of Decay 2? Thought it would be 75+. I have easily put 100 hours into it and loved it. Gonna have to edit it in my post.

Speaking of low scoring games
20 years back i played a demo of game called Shade:Wrath of angels
liked it back then .atmosphere of the game was good
Just saw the metacritic score now, with rating just of 50.
Wonder how the full game was. anyone here played the full game
User score is at decent 7.7.

Very good, I did not know it was a low scoring game. I thought it had more praise.
Hehe, weird that it shows that my posts were written by Nitty_Grimes. Anyway, Speaking of The Ascent: it scored better on PC (it was below 70 on xbox only) and it scored 77 on Playstation when it came out on the platform a year later.

I recently played and completed The Mobius Machine. It's a metroidvania with a rather unique art style. It's rated "Weak" on OpenCritic, but I think that's rather unfair. It has its faults, but it's not weak by any means. I'd say it's a high "Fair".

It was great but it got a 73 though. Definitely an 8,5 game at least.

Games below 70 start from here. There are 5487 of them out of 13432 games on metacritic. It's really hard to get below 70, especially in the modern era where developers are paid based on their games metacritic score, so they are probably right about those games.

When I quickly looked at the list, Devil May Cry 2 and Enter the Matrix caught my eye. Especially if they made a remake of Enter the Matrix, I think I would even pay $100 for it. A modern version would clean up all that old clunky gameplay and make for an amazing experience. I had seen a lot of criticism of DMC 2 after playing it, and I somewhat agree, but it was still quite a good game.

From modern games, Sea of Thieves has been unfairly treated. It was not great at release but come on. Many people really like Outward, but I haven’t played it myself. House Flipper is a game that delivers what it promises pretty well, but I only played it briefly. The mechanics of XDefiant were quite good, but I think people didn’t like how it felt like a 'best of' compilation of FPS games. Playing Lego Worlds co-op with my daughter was a lot of fun; you can instantly create whatever you want, and it was a great sandbox experience. Poi was only reviewed on Switch, but we played it for a few hours on PC, and it was a pretty fun 3D platformer. New Kao the Kangaroo wasn’t that bad either.

It's also interesting that the first Monster Hunter game received a 68. If something like that happened today, we might not have seen the continuation of such an amazing series. I wonder how bad it was lol.

I looked through up to games with a score of 64. With 3,242 games scoring over 80 until today, I don’t think I can spend time on anything below 70 points anymore.

A few off the top of my head:

Black Knight Sword
Mafia 3
Atomic Heart
Noby Noby Boy
Nier Replicant
Resonance of Fate
Mad Max

I'm sure there are tons more.

Edit: had no idea The Order was sub 70 so I'm definitely adding that to my list, criminally underrated.
Atomic heart is 70, but that's close enough :) Great game and criminally underrated.
Fallout 76.

From last year alone.

Kenka Banchou - 70 (one of those underground PSP games. It plays as some sort of High School Yakuza. So much fun)

Arma 3 - 74 (someone must be really crazy to give Arma 3 a score closer to 70 than to 85)

Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint (awesome gameplay and full of content.. after a few patches)

Test Drive Unlimited 2 - 70 (the entire series was so ahead of its time)
https://www.metacritic.com/game/test-drive-unlimited-2/

Mount and Blade -70 (high ambition, low budget- eurojank at its finest (at the time, today is just archaic) and started a franchise)

Alpha protocol - 73 (Eurojank made by OBSIDIAN and Sega)

Monster Hunter's popularity exploded in the West with Monster Hunter Tri for Wii. That's also when the West got hooked on it's gameplay and it started to get better Acclaim

This is new to me as I MC/OC never cross my mind. It's only by sorting my PC libraries by score that I can answer.

Dead Rising 2: OTR got 66

Sorry for the long list

Finding candidates in their UI is kind of tough, but first thing that jumped out:

10/10 Wiimote lightgun game

R6 Siege comes in at a 73, not sub-60, but ridiculous for GOAT competitive FPS.

Warframe at 69 is silly of course, but another big 'redemption' arc.

At first i was shocked that this is supposed to be in the 60s, but you picked the pc version and i looked up the version with the most reviews for more accuracy. Loved that game though.

Controversial opinion coming through: In this current landscape "below 70" tends to be where the new real gold can be found. You'll often find misunderstood games that got racked through the coal and dumped there by journos/critics for bewildering reasons. Tends to be because they're not hardcore gaming enthusiasts like the actual gaming community.

Like Go_Ly_Dow Go_Ly_Dow mentioned, had it not been for the word of mouth, Nier probably wouldn't had not seen another entry. Its shame most gamers aren't that open minded.

Maybe it was a bit of a shaky PC launch then, because I would never have guessed 66. Even 72 seems a bit low, it's great fun.
