Your Lie in April (Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso) IOTI Life is Colorful

I enjoyed this episode. I don't mind that Kousei actually acts like a believable 14 year old, especially when it completely flies straight over his head why Kaori picked "Lover's Sorrow" and in his insecurities about Kaori and Watari. Let's face it, when we were 14 year old's I'm sure we were just as oblivious and insecure about girl (I know I was) so I can excuse him from missing that Kaori likes him back.

First intro song was way better.

And I don't like where things are going. ;_;

I like the new OP and ED, but let's be real I knew going in there would be no way I wouldn't feel a bit underwhelmed compared to the ridiculously good Hikaru Nara. Goose house is just too based, ruining other OPs.

Edit: Found the Charlie Brown comic's Kaori references:

gah think im just gonna wait until the show ends than marathon the second half. i can't stomach sad stuff that cuts off and i have to wait a week :(

So I'm thinking Kaori is gonna
die
, just saying, so many flags popping up.

But anyways, is anyone else reminded of another similar (and more mature) romantic/music-themed show, White Album 2? 'Cause I am, and this show makes me wish a season 2 for White Album 2 will come.

I need something to watch, so I'm gonna give that one a try then. I watched Kids on the Slope a few weeks back and that was also a really nice (but a bit too short) music-themed anime.

I am fairly new to watching anime (watched my first one just a few months back) and between this, KotS and Beck I am really enjoying the music ones.

White Album 2 is 13 episodes long and deals more with the romance than it does with the music, though the music/songs played are still fairly enjoyable. But regardless I'd say go for it, it's a good (imo great) show nonetheless.

It's a fantastic show. Although be warned the tone is significantly different than Your Lie in April, steel your heart.

I don't know if Kaori is going to die but I am predicting the show ending on a hopeful and uplifting note no matter which way it goes. To end on a sad note would be very out of character with the tone of the show, which despite the seemingly impending tragedy is optimistic at the core.

Well, now I'm done with that one. Pretty good and I wish there was more. :(

Episode 13 is really a big turning point for Kousei. He's finally embraced his mother for what she is, and I can't be happier that he's moving on.

That ending though..

This show is good, but god, the slapstick comedy really hurts this show. Particularly because they play the physical and emotional abuse part straight, but then them hitting him in order to get him to get over his anxiety and play music is played for laughs. It's honestly jarring.

I've heard this argument repeated a number of times and I honestly don't understand it. There is a clear separation between the slapstick played for laughs and the actual abuse, I don't see why people have such a problem differentiating the two. It's not as though they put those scenes right back to back and its clear what is what. (That's not directed towards you personally but more towards the body of people saying the same thing)

I do agree there is an attempt at a clear separation, but it just doesn't work. The problem is, you can't fully separate them with the comedy style this show has opted for, especially because of how much it steers towards drama. Don't get me wrong, for a heavy show like this, there definitely should be some comedic moments to light up the mood, but the over the top slapsticky style just doesn't mesh well. They are not funny barring a few exception, it makes the girls seem intolerable, it prevents me from buying into the fact that they are helping him, they are poorly timed in many cases, and when the abuse part is taken so seriously, having it there at all sends my brain for a spin. So should I take his anxiety disorder seriously or not? I should right? The show telegraphs me so with many flashbacks, with change of color palette, with visual metaphors, etc. But then there are these moments preventing me from taking it seriously, as if the drama were an afterthought because the comedy is in such a sharp opposition to what the drama wants you to take seriously.

Got to say I agree that the slapstick comedy is the weak point of the show. It isn't particularly funny in any show, but then again I'm not a fan of slapstick.

Real talk, I think the mother's justification was pretty piss poor. I don't believe a human can physically abuse their own child and have the "I want my child to be happy!" mindset that this episode tried to portray her with.

Did they ever explain what was her illness?

Nope. I really don't think I've ever found an anime that bothered naming a life threatening illness that a character had. Unless curing the illness was the point of the show.

We probably won't find out what Kaori has either.

I just assumed the illness affected her brain somewhat. But her obsession could just be overplayed for drama purposes.

SAO spoiler

A Girl got AIDS!

If only it were
Asuna. I hated that goddamn show.

Her speech towards the piano coach chick makes me think it had no impact on her brain. She was basically just pulling the "I am abusing him so that he will develop the talent he needs for a better future! I love him sooo much."

I much preferred it when I thought she just fell into wanting to live vicariously through her child. Who the fuck doesn't think their child will have a future in music when they are considered a musical prodigy?

That and the heavy handed dialogue at times. I don't need the show to bluntly tell me that this scene X is a metaphor for Y. I can see for myself.

Otherwise, I'm fine with the show.

Yeah, I didn't like how they are like: hey it's all right because in the end mommy loved you!

Screw that crap.

It was never portrayed that way. It was about Kousei realizing that his mother also left him with some good things, and that his memories of her are not only just the abusive part. It's a more nuanced portrayal of the mother, and there is no attempt by the show to justify her abusive behaviour. We just see that there was another side to her which affected her relationship with her son, and this shouldn't be confused with providing justification for her behaviour. She may have tried to justify it to herself, but the show never implies this erases her past abuse of him.

It's also from Kousei's perspective, I think it's pretty understandable for him to try and cling to the few positive memories he's able to rediscover about his mother.

She can be delusional in her expectations without the illness affecting her brain. There are so many parents out there like that in places like youth sports leagues who have completely warped ideas of how to treat their children.

Real talk, I think the mother's justification was pretty piss poor. I don't believe a human can physically abuse their own child and have the "I want my child to be happy!" mindset that this episode tried to portray her with.

There are many, many parents out there who act exactly the same way she is, she has not been portrayed unrealistically at all.

The slapstick isn't that big of a deal to me. I was a little put off by the attempt to humanize the mother, but I guess if it's your mother and you're a small kid, even if she's abusive, you're still looking for some sort of closure under those circumstances. The show doesn't shy away from the fact that she turned into a monster, but it also shows that she was a loving parent at one point. It makes sense that he has some good memories of her.

I guess when she goes downhill (which, considering the flags, has to happen, right?) the difference between her attitude and actions and his mothers will be obvious.

Yeah, but people are flawed and full of great and anxiety when faced with the fact that they may abandon my child. As a father of a 4 year old, I couldn't imagine. Her reaction was rather extreme, but not outside of the realm of possibility.

I think Kousei realized there were good sides to his mother too, and he chose to remember them now

and why is Kaori's head bandaged :(

I just started watching this, and I'm up to ep 11 I believe. So yep, this anime just grabbed me and never let go. A really good show that never seems to have any lows.

This show just keeps building up Kōsei/Tsubaki to the point I can't help but ship it despite knowing Kōsei is into Kaori.

This irks me every time I see this thread in Off-Topic. The title is really "April is/was Your Lie" not "Your Lie in April". If it was "Your Lie in April," it'd be called Shigatsu niwa Kimi no Uso.

And yet we are stuck with the official English title, such is life

damn it, kaori's complexion is so pale :(

I can't be the only immature person that chuckled at the pair of mud balls at the end right?

There are so many death flags now. I mean I'm not even going to be sad or shocked if/when it does happen. Maybe they will trick us and she doesn't die? Now that would be more shocking
