I mainly use it for porn and some nich subreddits. Though i dont participate and mainly lurk. It can be a great resource for nich subjects that you cant easily find in the internet.

By and large a cesspool due to the layout and quality of the average post. That said, I browse it from time to time to keep tabs on certain trends in my field and find new resources, digital movie sales, etc. Beyond that it's like the evolution of the YT comment section, with more self-righteous hot takes.

Get rid of the voting system.

Too many asshats that will just downvote you because they feel like it no matter how legit or civil you are.

Maybe just keep upvoting but definitely get rid of downvoting. It's abused as all fuck.

I didn't like the format at reddit at first but eventually got used to it.

Now I just don't like that most subs are manipulated/engineered by social media guerrilla squads (some probably run by political messaging groups). Totally non-political subs get overrun by cringe inducing lefty posts. There's something going on at the Rogan sub in regards to Joe discussing ways to boost immune system, which is somehow anti-COVID narrative so there's continuous posts upvoted far beyond the normal activity of the sub that act like Joe is blaming 5G.

So I think reddit will die as the political narrative control ramps up. People will just bail. They can't have their own conversations anymore.

I use reddit a lot. But i hate it. Like most social media it's dominated by people with very specific agendas.
I started using reddit more often after the colapse of old gaf. I also tried voat. But that place was too much even for me.

Hobby related subreddit that don't allow memes or politics are great. The rest is pretty much trash. I do have a porn account and there is some good content there.

It’s horrible. The voting system is awful, it promotes pandering and groupthink.

I only use it for help on certain things like tech help or hardware help, and there are subreddits where people downvote bomb your posts for seemingly no apparent reason, which means less people will click it because they think it’ll be something stupid, when most likely it was a bunch of 13 year olds who just downvote shit all day.

I asked a very simple legal question the other day and I went back later and it had a 0 next to it and inside it said 25% upvoted. One person replied and answered my question and his reply had 5 upvotes, I replied just saying “thanks” and that got -2 downvotes. I’m like wtfff

I use it all the time on old layout only.
Some subs are retarded as fuck as You can't ask this, must include that in the title, this is forbidden, this allowed... You have to read a rules book before posting.
But others are really useful. Also a lot of people asking 10x a day "can I fix this monitor" and posting a pic of a broken monitor. You can't make this shit up

There's a bunch of subreddits I'm following. You simply can't find a better place to have discuss Tyranids anywhere else on the internet.

(which reminds me I still have about 90 models to paint...)

I think most of social media, especially Reddit, just rots the mind. It destroys individuality in weak minds and fuels an addiction for new information without providing anything of substance. The userbase has been filled with idiots and it's popularity has caused it to become a target for companies and people who want to push an agenda - the voting system just exacerbates these problems. Dissenting opinions are silenced and group think is incredibly prevalent. It caters to the lowest common denominator and threatens critical thinking.

I think the past few years have proven that most are fine to adopt and propagate the narrative that the system tells them to. Reddit isn’t going anywhere.

I used to like prequel memes, but now those crazy people stopped making fun of those movies and started voting for them over endgame and shit in the RT poll! So that's unfortunate that that community went crazy

Reddit is full of fake accounts pushing political and corporate agendas. Be cautious.

Exactly.

It's like people don't understand the implications of what EviLore EviLore shared. This is Reddit. It's one site that is providing the illusion of thousands of diverse communities. Can you even imagine being a community owner running a subreddit on the platform and being told that Reddit admins are banning all discussion of a perfectly legal and reasonable topic, and that continued violations will result in the closure of the subreddit?

Oh well, it's their site, apparently. This shit would have never flown on IRC back in the day... for whatever that counts for. lol

Layout is trash but the website itself is really good.

I guess you could describe it as 4chan, except not degenerate trash.

Reddit is a mix of two things. A few pages dedicated to something specific that are worth checking out, and a liberal cesspool of fringe group think

I find reddit to be a site where people try way too hard to be funny (cussing, being rediculous, etc) to get "gold" and then they thank people for making their post gold.

Also the comment viewing is very poorly designed.

Yeah that is the other problem. The Reddit comment humor is a cringe fest.

For the layout/comment viewing, I find the mobile app WAY better than the website. Hell, I can't even figure out the block user feature on the website version and in the app it is the same as here and other places (click name and there's an ignore/block option).

For the other, yeah, the upvote and gold system lead to lots of attention seeking that makes any of the large, busy subs worthless. It's generally not a problem for smaller subs like the one for my city or subs dedicated to a single game etc. Sticking with those avoids a lot of the kids and attention whores, and further helps with the comment viewing as they're slow enough to just sort by new.

I actually like the layout when it's slow enough to sort by new. When having a back and forth conversation with someone it's nice to have that as a "thread within a thread" rather than just quoting each other with unrelated posts in between in traditional forums IMO.

I love reddit and much of their content are so wholesome, you could pretty much find any specific sub reddit there

maybe the only glaring bad thing that I found there is the usage of downvote button, as it could be a potential echo chamber creation in some of the subreddits

apparently reddit has become my routine before going to sleep these days

It depends on the sub, some are pretty great, others stink of SJW ass.

That early 2000's layout tho....

Community based censorship, I only go to that cesspool for information. Begging for attention really helps to spiff up info dumps.

I like it. I use to find game specific information on their sub-reddits. Its been very useful also to read on user feedback and impressions. I'm also a heavy Destiny sub-reddit user, the community there in general is great. They can be salty at times, but not toxic. I've seen way worse sub reddits

I like it for games and tech because general forums tend to wander in the same predictable directions. Subreddits are generally pretty good at staying on topic. The problem they have is you create a vacuum of content that gets filled with memes in the lulls. I like memes but some of the the subreddits are like 80% meme

It is the best site in the net for game tips and strategies. You want to know how to roll up a broken D&D character? newest meta for MHW? faceroll setup for Gears Tactics? how do find that obscure hidden tech in Chrono Trigger?

...there's a reddit for it and the info is gold.

I haven't used it for porn though, but now I'm curious. What are we talking about here...is it just where amateurs go to upload their home movies or something?

It's a good source for finding answers to questions or just general opinions on things when you use Google. Like, "what is the scariest movie on Netflix 2020 Reddit". The first page of Google search will be filled with r/horror and r/movie and r/netflix subreddit posts and threads. I've found lots of useful information about many topics based on simple Googling with "Reddit" being a keyword. It's great for that.

I use the popular page sometimes for fun. Full of memes and political news and science stuff. I follow a ton of subreddits too. Pretty much any interest you have, there's at least a small community for it. I personally prefer actual forums, more tightknit and you actually recognize and remember other users. The formatting of Reddit is annoying in comparison to old school forums and you can't have legitimate conversation with anyone. It's like the YouTube comments section, just fighting for an upvote to get noticed.

Its pretty good for some subjects, and porn (lol). but its going downhill

an admins has been caught censoring posts. (admins can change a users post without any signs of editing shown)
the vast majority of popular subreddits are controlled by a small group of people.
they are chinese backed and censor anti chinese
moderators essentially have complete control of a subreddit with no oversight and cant be removed unless inactive
admins can force a moderator to go inactive by banning them meaning they can erase any community they dont like (they do this often)

like today redlettermedia released their plinkett review of star trek picard and the mods of r/startrek simply do not allow discussion of it with no real reason given.
so either the mods are on that cbs paycheck or the admins are

I looked at the Harry Potter section because I’m now a huge fan who has read all the books now. I always dreamed of discussing it in depth and learn more about the books and the universe more because I love them. I was glad to see people really going at it in Reddit

It’s good for that. I imagine once I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings I’m going to be addicted to lore and that series as well lol

Someone replied to a post I made on r/stimuluscheck that was simply mentioning to someone else that a second stimulus hasn't passed yet. No politics or anything. Whole post was maybe one sentence.

Person replies to me with a long, drawn out post with an unironic "orange man bad" (they specifically referred to him as "The Orange One") post and how some how he's to blame for a second stimulus not happening. It was like a paragraph long.

Reddit is a collection of some of the most pathetic people on earth. Only marginally better than Resetera. Only page I still visit is wallstreetbets but even that's getting pretty cucked, they started censoring the gay bears meme.

I always wrongly viewed it as something like 4chan all this time. I thought it was like some kind of highly toxic underground nerdy demon dungeon of sorts where a bunch of warped minds or idiots gathered to discuss anything under the sun

Was pleasantly surprised to see I was wrong. And that there was really good conversation and discussion going on. I would love to make an account and start joining in on those discussions. It’s fairly amazing, one huge forum where the internet at large can discuss things in depth and the threads will last years with constant flowing conversation. It’s brilliant

But how did this start and grow so immensely? How did almost everyone come to accept it as ‘the’ place to discuss anything and everything? I’ll be honest, the layout to me is still confusing. And I don’t know what a subreddit is entirely. But the layout I always thought was very odd and for me it kept me away from even checking it out a little bit

I remember hearing about it in its early days and there was some sort of vague connection to 4chan. It was known as a bit of an underground site with an ‘anything goes’ ethos.

It’s pretty hard to avoid. I’ve been on it plenty of times for a variety of reasons, but only posted once. It’s a bit of a sprawling mess.

I like it. Though I avoid anything remotely political, which means world news for example. It's a GIGANTIC FAQs section for me. I've found pretty much everything I've needed so far there.
Also, great communities of shows that I love such as The Wire, The Office...

Recently I got to know the Farming Simulator sub and it's incredibly helpful, very nice people willing to give you a hand.

It's like asking for my opinion on bread. There's good bread, there's bad bread, there's really weird bread, and there's bread you only want paired with other things. Reddit is like bread.

Propaganda mixed with distraction. There is less organic thought than you think.

Homogenization of society. Transition and control.
