Your RPG of the Year?

Devil Summoner so far.
Although, I haven't finished Mother 3.
First chapter was so sad!!

Neverwinter Nights 2.
it’s a bit weird choice, since I think Oblivion is a better game overall.
But when you consider the core RPG aspects, like plot, dialog, class and stats system, NWN2 blows Oblivion out of the water.
Oblivion is brilliant sandbox, but the RPG elements are the weakest parts of it.

Devil Summoner

What a shit year for RPG's

There, I said it.

Ouch. I'm all for Megaten, but Devil Summoner was quiet disappointing. Mainly because it didn't utilize the adventure game elements well enough.

Game I enjoyed the most was Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth... a PSP port of a game nearly a decade old.

It really wasn't the best year for RPGs. :P

Mother 3, if I'm allowed to count RPGs not officially released in my region. Otherwise, Dragon Quest VIII or Oblivion... probably Oblivion on the merit of how much time I sunk into it. No idea where FFXII would place in all this.

Ya kiddin? The investigations via demons and what not are awesome cool. Plus, getting my crappy little demon to survive solo against some big fuggers is nothing short of awesome.

I did spend a lot of time playing old games/remakes this year though.

Hopefully I'll be able to finish it this weekend. Then BK2, Suiko5 or DDS2 is next on the list. I'm sooooo behind on everything. (And I'm playing 16-bit stuff like Phantasy Star 2 right now as well!)

Tales of the Abyss by far.

Only other RPGs I've attempted this year are Valkyrie Profile 2, and Final Fantasy 12.

Final Fantasy III > DS (portables)
Oblivion > 360 (consoles)
Final Fantasy XI Treasures of Aht Urhgan > PC

The investigation elements were not implemented well. There was no sense of discovery since you couldn't experiment with different abilities, only one worked in any given situation.

I really didn't like how you couldn't customize the main character either. Having the same exact skill set from start to finish is just boring. Even customizing demons was horribly simplified since only three skills could be used in battles. Not to mention the whole battle system was very bad (no camera control, or targeting system? What a joke).

Best part of the game was the story and the atmosphere.
The game wasn't bad, just very disappointing. Nearly ever Megaten game I've played turns into one of my favorite games of all time. DS is so far from that, I just expected a lot more.

Final Fantasy 12 by far.

Combined epic FF storytelling with a FFTactics serious tone + it really took care of my no MMORPG withdrawal.

Don't make fun of me but I had a great 40 hours with Enchanted Arms and fully enjoyed all the time I spent with it.

FFXII, of course, is great, Shadow Hearts III very good and atm I'm a couple of hours into Tales of the Abyss but to be honest I enjoyed Enchanted Arms the most.

If we're talking RPGs that came out in 2006 then FFXII would get my vote without question. If not then it'd be a three way tie between Dragon Quest VIII, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and Final Fantasy XII.

WOW YOU READ MINDS AND KNOW THAT EVERYONE'S RPG OF THE YEAR WAS OBLIVION? YOU AMAZE ME. HOW MUCH FOR YOUR SOOTHSAYING SERVICES?

Poor fanboy. :(

I didn't like Lunar 1 or 2... hmmm.. didn't know what the big deal was, the battle system pissed me off.

Is he talking about Dragon Song? If so, ouch.

As for what attracts people to the series... I would imagine the same thing that attracts people to Dragon Quest. It's just a very traditional JRPG with fantastic music, charming cast of characters and a touching cliche' story.

Yeah I know, I get that remark often, so don't take it the wrong way when I say I'm not flattered

FF12... but it has to be said that it's the only RPG i've played this year. (other than DQ8, which came out last year, if i'm not mistaken)

Still this is one of the best RPG's i've played all gen (i'm about 30 hours in right now)

I have a feeling i would like oblivion more, because i slightly prefer the elder scrolls games over FF, but i don't have a 360 and my PC is crap.

Makes sense as your choices are heavy FMV like games
And for one PM actually got my point, thank you :)

FFXII.

That or Suikoden V. But I didn't play many.

Oblivion would have been my top choice but it got so damn boring after a while. Now I can't stand playing it for more than 5 minutes. Good game though. :)
