YouTube is Getting Worse

Youtube revanced on mobile and Ublock on a browser desktop, are god sends to fix a lot of modern youtube's problems.
And I'm not just talking about ads. The ability to change some aspects of the UI, remove shorts, change thumbnail size is a must to have a decent experience on youtube.
The youtube devs that are making the UI are a bunch of halfwits, that have no idea of how humans interect with the service. They are so bad, they should send go and work for Microsoft.

its easy just this.

It's gotten so bad that even my parents have asked me how to skip commercials.

I wonder if we'll see the death of Youtube in the next 10 yrs. Seems like mass migrations don't happen very often (ex. Myspace to Facebook). I wonder what creates a tipping point and what factors have to be in place for a replacement site to actually take off.

I have a fool proof way of not having to sit through adverts on YouTube. There's no updates Google can push out to change it either. It's perfect, I just don't watch YouTube at all.

It's honestly the most no-brainer streaming service to pay for. I've gotten way more value out of it than Netflix or HBO Max or Disney+ or whatever.
I already pay for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and sometimes Disney+. I don't see the value of youtube.

This will never happen. There's not another company in the world that can handle the datacenter backend that Google maintains to house YouTube.

And none of the ones who could are going to double down on the type of user made content that youtube thrives on. They will let Google fall on that sword alone.

Do you have a link for that ublock extension that work?

Because my ublock hasn't worked on yt for like a month.

UBlock Origin works on desktop. If YT says you shouldn't be using it, switch to a different account for a bit. Works immediately.

Wait, you need to set stuff? Every extension i had worked automatically.

Not really. I added a couple of lists, just to harden it a bit.
I also added a custom list for Portuguese sites. You might want to do the same, but with the Italian Easy List.
Just open the Ublock Dashboard and on the bottom pick that list.

I use chrome.

Don't use Chrome, nor Edge. They are absolute crap, infested with spyware from Microsoft and Google.
Use Brave instead. It's also Chromium browser and you can import settings, history and bookmarks from Chrome.

Actually, and I have no idea why and how, but YouTube stopped playing ads for me about a month or two ago. I watch on my PS5 primarily, but I checked my tablet and no ads there either.

Even though it says I'm still on regular YouTube and not Premium, I still checked my bank account to make sure somehow I or someone else had accidentally or intentionally respectively upgraded me to Premium, but nope, nothing suspicious there. And no, I don't do anything with an ad-blocker or anything, plus I assume that wouldn't even be an option for the PS5 YouTube app.

So yeah, YouTube just doesn't bother me with ads anymore. But hey:

Its still not bad enough that I wouldn't use it, but yes the ads are too much. YouTube is basically a replacement for cable for me and has been since 2006. They got me by the balls here. I can still block the ads but its getting annoying.

Do you maybe work for Youtube :messenger_grinning_sweat: ?

As others in the thread have pointed out:

For Android TVs: SmartubeNext. It's great. Once installed on your TV, it updates itself.

For Android phones and tablets: YouTube ReVanced. Learn how to use ReVanced manager. Once you learn it, it is easy to just download the correct YouTube apk and patch it using ReVanced manager.

For Windows: Firefox with Ublock Origin. Hasn't failed me yet. Throw on some more extensions like privacy badger and cookie autodelete for good measure.

Bonus: Firefox android app also has the above mentioned extensions available.

and lastly, it should be pointed out: IF you can afford it, get a YouTube Premium family plan. There is no shame in it, it doesn't make you a Google shill. Youtube Music comes bundled with it which has a bigger music library than Spotify or any other.

this is why socialism doesn't work.

youtube can only function if people either pay or eat ads. eventually most people figure out how to bypass the ads leaving fewer payers so those few get even more ads to offset. But this causes a feedback loop, as ads then get worse, then even more people bypass the ads. So then they have to get even more aggressive.

If they'd offer a ad-free plan for maximum $4.99 without all the other shit bundled I'd happily support them. But as it is I'll just block it all.

I dropped spotify years ago when they offered youtube music with youtube premium together.

Premium is the best answer that no one wants to hear.
YouTubes music player is absolute dog water!

Probably the most infuriating piece of shite I've used in years.

It's good it comes as standard with YT premium, but it really needs a bit of work. It pissed me off so much at one point I just started to MP3 songs for a player off of the Play store.

I don't know if it also works specifically for youtube (commercials), but you can also adjust your hostfile on your pc or even with a pi-hole to block domains from your network. Also makes loading websites much faster.

https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts like this one I'm using.

Do i have to manually transfer everything from chrome to brave or when you install brave does everything in automatic?

I have way too much comodity on chrome to give up on everything, even just typing a letter on the keyboard and he knows what site i want to visit, simple stuff like this goes a long way for a lazy fuck like me :lollipop_squinting: , if brave can copy EVERYTHING from chrome down to this stuff with ease then i will switch.

Brave will have a dialog box that will ask you if you want to import things from another browser. Select Chrome and that should be it.
After that, check if everything is alright, then remove Chrome.
I don't know if it's going to copy everything. But you can set it up after.
Getting rid of Chrome is a huge plus. And being able to block ads on youtube is another huge plus.

Probably it wasn't Steve, but rather youtube doing it by itself.
It's one of the complaints that he talks about in the video. Content creators no longer have control of ads in their videos.

YouTube Premium. Haven seen an ad in years. And YouTube Music fucking destroys both Apple Music and Spotify, and it comes free as part of the Youtube Premium payment.

I'm reading about crypto stuff to disable, is it old news or still valid?

It's a free service, so I don't mind it that much.

Disney + on the other hand, they have ads now regardless of the fact you're paying. That one bothers me.

I would actually recommend Firefox instead, as it is not Chromium based. From what I understand extensions work less well with chromium browsers?

Can someone list the benefits of Brave over Firefox? I only heard about this browser relatively recently, but don't really know it's USPs. From what I'm reading it has some crypto stuff on by default which is already a big turnoff for me.

Same.

Some people are just always going to be 'fuck the system' but eventually they won't be able to skip the adverts at all.

That or just torrent the videos you want to watch eh? :messenger_winking: :messenger_winking:

Two questions:

1) When was the last time you tried using it?

2) What is it missing that you feel it needs (realistically as compared to spotify)?
