Yeah, SP is essentially disabled in Nightmare mode, you have to make with what little is in chests.

There is supposed to be a feature in the game where once you have beat the game with all three characters, each new game you start should allow you the option to start with 10,000 SP for each clear game flag (per character and difficulty) you have. It's either broken on XSEED's version, or I have misunderstood how it works.

Ah, okay, I was wondering what was up with that. It asked me if I wanted my bonus SP, I chose Yes, and when I started my new game it gave me jack all.

Tom, we need this fixed!

As noted, Sara's been looking into it. It's just apparently not as simple a fix as it sounds.

Sorry for the delay!

Oh, and I don't want to come off like a jerk demanding things or anything like that. I really appreciate that you and Sara engage the community directly to offer answers and listen to feedback. It's just really great being able to talk to somebody at a company instead of being left wondering if your words are falling into a void.

So seriously, thanks a lot being awesome people.

Yup. Bringing awesome games and great support :)

As someone who plays primarily for stories, does this offer anything the TG-16 version doesn't?

It does, adding a bit to the game's depth -- particularly Ys I, where they added a whole town that didn't exist in the TG-16 version, and also crafted a backstory about a ring of storms around Esteria, of which I don't believe the TG-16 version made any mention.

I wouldn't play Ys I & II for the story, though, personally. Story is definitely not the focus of these games, and you may find yourself disappointed if you try to make it one. Ys games are strictly about the gameplay.

I thought Solomon Shrine was a good idea. I love that dungeon.

It's even one of those rare things me and Tom can actually agree on!

That's not to say 80s game design is inherently BAD, but it's definitely true there was a tendency to be more obfuscated and twisty back then.

WHO thought Solomon Shrine was a good idea? THIS IS INSANE

Haha. Yeah, that place sure can frustrate. I remember almost losing it trying to find some room where that little shithead dropped the black pearl. Still I wish more games had dungeons this complex. It was pretty much the final dungeon and it certainly felt like one.

Solomon Shrine isn't even that bad. It's segmented so you can break down your exploration into 5 sections (not counting the underground). The only crappy part is trying to remember where all the locked doors you passed were once you get the key.

Almost missed this!

Yeah, Solomon Shrine is probably my favorite final dungeon of all time. I absolutely LOVE the atmosphere of that place. Makes me feel like a total badass as I sneak my away around in Roo form, unlock doors, and basically get all up in the enemies' business. ;) It's the old trope of the maze-like dungeon, to be sure... but as far as I'm concerned, it's a maze done RIGHT. Which is a very rare thing to find.

Definitely not for everybody, though. ;)

I usually don't even bother with Roo form, I just cut everything to pieces.

Which means I get lots of experience, and things like this happen.

And that brings up the question, are you supposed to be able to leave the room when you fight Druegar? I actually did it by accident, and I realized you can get a head start on the fight that way.

Which version is the best ? PSP or PC ?

With Chronicles, it honestly doesn't really matter that much, since the game is really simple to play due to the mechanics.

The PC version supports higher resolutions, but the PSP version is portable.

In the case of Felghana, it's PC all the way.

I have a major issue right now trying to move the story forward in Ys I

i just finished the mines and now have all three books. I have the complete silver set, and I have all 6 keys. When I talk to Jeba and have her read all three books, nothing happens. I expected her to tell me to go to Darn Tower, but again, nothing happens.

Anybody know what I'm missing? It's like the trigger to move forward isn't working for me!

Edit: nevermind!
I had to also speak with Feena on the pier, leave the town, and then the proper dialog with Jeba triggered

All of the Ys titles received an update today. Any word as to what was added?

Probably bug fixes, Sara mentioned not too long ago she was going to have time to work on them some.

What is the reason for the level cap?

Ys I? It's just there, really. The game is balanced around it well enough, so it never bothered me.

Ys II is kind of the opposite, while the first game expects you to hit the cap about the time you're in the mines, I don't think you're expected to hit the cap in Ys II (level 50).

Decided to replay Ys 1 on Nightmare. Dark Fact has got me Deep Fucked. I don't even bother with trying to dodge all the bullet hell, and I try to stay on the outer edge for as long as possible to avoid shrinking the platform too far too soon but I always seem to end up screwed in the end.

I can sometimes get a string of hits in as he travels along the center of the area but that usually backfires on me. I had him down to two more strikes and then I ended up trapped between cracks and the fireball spam pummeled me to death. Achievement was so close I could taste it...

Really want to move on to Ys II on Nightmare but not until I kill that piece of crap.

Someone in another thread mentioned getting a Ys Community thread going and I'm very, very tempted at trying my hand at creating one. Granted, I've only just started really getting into the games this year thanks to the Steam releases and there's probably other fans on NeoGAF more qualified to give it a go. With a potential new sequel (maybe) in the works and many more new fans coming aboard it could do well. Or it could get ignored.

What to do...

Ha ha, oh god.

Anyway, I beat Dark Fact on Nightmare after many a retry and continued on. Ys II on Nightmare is... interesting. You're forced to rely on Fireball spam a lot more than on a normal playthrough when dealing with regular enemies. I'm now at the Ys core and ready to take on the final boss, but in an act of sheer stupidity I choose to save my game after going through the final door (because I didn't want to click through the extended cinema scene with the Priest's descendents every time on reload) which unfortunately is the-point-of-no-return. And I come to find that even at Level 50 (8 points away from a level-up!) and the best equipment in the game I'm simply not doing enough damage before I'm completely annihilated.

I was really rushing this playthrough, so I'm not surprised I might be underleveled but I can't leave the core anymore to grind. Am I going to have to scrap this run? Dang. What's a reasonable level to challenge Darm? Or rather, how high a level can one grind to before it stops being worth the time i.e. enemies no longer give enough experience to make it worthwhile?

The thought of meticulously attempting to dodge every projectile while attempting to get close enough to strike x 100... I don't think my heart and mind can take it. At the rate each strike deals only a sliver of damage to its lifebar... yeah, it's going to be a miserable battle.
