Ys I & II Chronicles+ |OT|: A Valentine's Day Double Date With Two Goddesses!

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I don't dislike Mask of the Sun quite as much as you do, but it is probably my least-favorite Ys title, so I can definitely relate.

Definitely give Dawn of Ys another shot, though, as that's actually one of my FAVORITE Ys titles. The differences between Dawn and Mask are night and day -- the dungeons in Dawn are exceptionally well-designed, the story and pacing is perfect, the graphics and music are some of the best ever encountered in the 16-bit era as far as I'm concerned, and the bump system is fun, rewarding and well-balanced. Hudson did an incredible job with the game, and really captured the spirit of Ys I & II while updating it to 1993 standards. It's a lovely, lovely game, and is absolutely an improvement on Mask of the Sun in every conceivable regard as far as I'm concerned.

-Tom

Yeah, Mask was one of the later Ys games I played and it just didn't compare in any way whatsoever to Dawn. I thought Mask cut out a lot of content from Dawn and just didn't have nearly as interesting boss fights or music.. it was a lot more forgettable too. Dawn is probably my favorite of the "classic" (pre 6) Ys games.

Will QA for food.
Thread has inspired me to clear out my Ys backlog with Origin and Oath. I'm sure I'll be Chronicles on a Steam sale this year.

So after playing through these first two games again, I decided to finally get around to beating Origin. I am getting weirdly emotional when it comes to
Yunica and the Godessess's friendship
. It's sweet.

Did you beat the game with the third character? That's considered the true end.

Ys 1 took me 6 hours to beat with an hour of that being me beating my head against the wall trying to kill the stupid end boss.

I'm trying to work out quite how I managed to register twelve hours on a single playthrough. It might just be that I was trying to complete the bestiary, which took a while!

(And, for that matter, I didn't seem to get Monster Masher for it. The progress report is saying 175/180, but I can't find any ??? entries left. Something I'm missing?)

(And I've just had a thought on that note...)

Finished Ys II yesterday. Oddly enough I didn't remember it nearly as well as Ys I so I ran into several roadblocks.

Still a great game though, and solidly my third favorite Ys game after Oath and Origin.

And how do bestiary entries work? I didn't even get the item that allows you to get the entries in Ys II, but in Ys I it seems like entries get added at random almost. Some enemies I seemed to have killed dozens of would only have one entry while others I killed a handful of times would have full entries.

Edit: I also think I ran into a bug but couldn't reproduce it. The mirror in Noltia wasn't working on the door, no matter what I did I just got the standard message about the mirror. Quit since I thought I was doing something wrong, came back later and tried again, then it just worked.

In Ys II, the potion is hidden in a blocked off area in the ruins field area near the start. You need use the tool to break a hole to get in.

Yeah, I knew where it was, I just meant I never bothered going back for it. Not worried about the achievements or anything.

I was just wondering if the updates were done completely randomly or if there was some sort of structure to it, because it seemed entirely random in Ys I.

I have completed the monster books in the two games a few times now; based on my experience it FEELS like the updates in Ys I are random and the updates in Ys II happen sort of more consistently (like maybe after each eighth kill?).

Hmmmm.... it's not something I have experimented much, but maybe it's a random chance to fill one part of the entry each time you kill an enemy, and it increases with each kill?

I thought it was just every 5 kills filled in a slot in both games. Like, if I had three sets of ??? I'd just kill 15 enemies and that always seemed to do the trick. Now you guys are making me doubt myself.

Finally beat Ys 5 on ps2, and while the endgame dungeons were horrible, I'm glad I pushed through. The villain was pretty interesting. It was cool to see a villain who didn't want to take over the world, but was just a total mad scientist type who cared more about his research than anything. Kind of a rare type in gaming, so it was nice. The ending was cute as well with the "family" coming together. Also I really liked some of the music. It would've been REALLY nice if Yonemitsu got his hands on this soundtrack, but I guess Hudson didn't want this one.

Playing Ys 4 on ps2 now and it's kinda boring. Way too much backtracking and the "seventh book of Ys" thing is kind of a cheap retcon. Unless it gets REALLY good in the second half I'm calling this as the weakest entry in the series.

The PS2 games (except Ark of Napishtim) are generally considered really bad, especially 4. In fact I'm sure a lot of people would say you haven't really even played Ys 4 just experiencing that version.

Bought Dawn of Ys at Book off recently for 500 yen. Opened it up, and there was a copy of Record of Lodoss War II for Super CD inside. I took the game back, and someone had already bought the adjacent copy of Record of Loddos War that presumably had the actual Ys IV inside.

As Chaosblade noted, the PS2 versions of Ys IV and Ys V are VERY different games from the "real" Ys IV and Ys V versions. Ys IV in particular really got the short end of the stick, with everything from gameplay to story to music being throttled beyond recognition. Try playing Dawn of Ys after it, and you'll be amazed at how incredibly different an experience you have.

The differences in Ys V should also be highlighted, though. A lot of people claim the PS2 version of Ys V is actually BETTER than Falcom's own Super Famicom version, but it's also non-canon, with a lot of story changes (including one that adds Dogi to the mix -- he's not actually supposed to be in Ys V at all!) and even a missing dungeon.

Ys III PS2 fares a little better, with the story unchanged from Falcom's own, but the gameplay alterations really hurt it IMHO, making it a much less interesting and much less fun game than its 16-bit forebears. If you're going to play a modernized Ys III, I'd definitely recommend Felghana over Ys III PS2, by leaps and bounds.

I own Ys V Expert for the Super Famicom. I've just been sitting on it forever because I've been waiting for Aeon Genesis to finish the rom hacking on their translation. I've grown tired of waiting.

So my question is, how story heavy is the game? I know the Ys games are usually more about wrecking shop than they are about their stories, but what story is there in the games I actually like a lot. It's that piece that ties everything about the games together, you know? I guess it's not really the stories per se but the way they're told...

Anyway, I'm wondering if I'll be able to enjoy the game even if I won't know what's being said.

Honestly... in the case of Ys V especially, the answer is "not really." Ys V has one of the better stories in the series, with a lot of really cool twists and a lot of really progressive concepts that are unique not just for the Ys series, but for games in general at the time. Sadly, however, it doesn't have the gameplay chops to match -- combat is slow and frustratingly precise, dungeons are short and predictable (and often include lots of forced platforming elements, which don't mesh well with the game's weird controls), and the magic system is incredibly wonky. I don't think there's any game in the series that needs a remake more than Ys V, as the things it does well are indeed done VERY well... but sadly, none of them can be experienced without being able to read Japanese.

Note that this doesn't apply to Taito's PS2 remake, which is marginally better gameplay-wise but has a notably altered storyline (with a lot of content removed and only a little added).

All right, so it's the one Ys game where the story is actually better than the gameplay. Sigh sigh sigh. Guess it'll just keep warming my shelf. Thanks for the answer, Tom.

Made it to Solomon's Shrine in Ys II, so making progress. Burnedbless boss had me at a bit of a wall for a bit (just would get caught and unable to escape).

How do you do the mosquito thing achievement anyways? And I need to find meat or something to feed the cat at the village before the shrine.

Het_Nkik

The mosquito thing, I have no idea. I thought I remembered some appearing around me in the Sanctuary of Toal when I played through the PSP game but I don't know what it was about and I've never had it happen on any subsequent playthroughs.

There are a couple places to get meat. You can
give 4 gifts to Theo in Lance or 5 gifts to Nash in the Colony of Lava
.

Interesting. If it's next in line to be remade, I hope Falcom keeps the OG strengths intact.

Ditto here. I think an Ys V remake in the style of Felghana would be ideal, and also amazing.

Though if they went party system with it, at least that means I might get to play as Stalker -- one of the biggest badasses in all of Ys. ;)

Am I less of a man for being fed up with the penultimate boss of Ys 1 on Normal and just skipping straight to 2?

If it helps I beat Oath on hard mode and it was my first Ys game, I'm just not good with bumpy combat :p.

Yeah. That boss was easier in Origin for sure. I know it's just to get the timing right but I've died 15 times to it already haha.

Also, is the song that plays in the mirror hall in Origin? The song sounded very familiar. (Game has a wonderful soundtrack, but that's to be expected when Yuzo Koshiro composed, I guess)

I found it easier hitting it closer to its sides attacking up. On the plus side it gets easier as it goes on.

Yeah, the song from the mirror hall in Ys I... is also the song from the mirror hall in Ys Origin!

What's less obvious, though, is that in addition to the mirror music and the regular tower music being featured in Ys Origin, so too is the upper-floor tower theme... it's just been transformed into a disco and used as boss music! It's used specifically only during the boss fight in Rado's Annex, but it's one of my favorite Ys Origin tracks. Both versions of the song are called "Tension," but I like to refer to the Origin version as "Disco Tension." ;)

I thought as much, I looked through a playlist of Origin's soundtrack but couldn't find the song though. I feel kind of robbed, I can't imagine how awesome it must have been to have played Origin after playing the first two Ys titles. Must have been a very special kind of nostalgia.

So now I'm wondering, what's the word on Ark of Napishtim? I got Felghana through that Groupon signup promotion a year back or so and Origin on Steam. Beat both, I want more!

The mirror maze track is called "Dreaming" in both Ys I and Ys Origin. It's one of those classic Ys tracks that's been remixed and arranged a million times, but I think my favorite version of it has to be the Ys I Complete (!) version. Not the Chronicles mix... no, the Complete mix. I just really, really like the synth in that one!

Least favorite version... is actually Ys Origin's. I dunno, I just don't think it's a very good arrangement. It still sounds cool, but it doesn't even come close to the awesomeness of all the Ys I versions.

As for Ark of Napishtim... as I always tell people, if we haven't announced something, then I can't officially comment on it. All I can really say is that... yeah, we'd love to release it! Here's hoping we get the chance. ;)

Dreaming? Is this the part of this thread where I get to post this ridiculously amazing arrangement?

You should just skip the potential musical selections for Celceta and just release that CD with the (probable) LE instead. Because the whole thing (except the last song, unfortunately) is so, so good.

This is funny because we know it's coming. The Ys games have got to be doing well enough on Steam to pay for the rights, pay Sara to get them up and running as the best versions possible, and then to make profit. Hell, just by myself I've purchased like 5 copies of Oath and 4 copies of Origin on Steam because I keep giving them to people hoping they'll become Ys converts. But I can't wait for the announcement!

Also, I'm about 3/4ths of the way through Origin with Toal now and I just kind of love all the characters in this game. It's awesome seeing different facets of every character depending on who you're playing as. Epona going from scathing bitch in Yunica's playthrough to getting a dose of her own medicine in Hugo's is good stuff. But I think one of my Cheevos is going to break on me. It says I've only given 13/18 Roda Fruit to the Roos when I've actually given 16/18 so far :(

EDIT: Never mind, when I started up Steam today the count was correct. Hooray.

Fortunately, since Ark of Napishtim uses the same engine as Felghana and Origin, most of the groundwork for the expected improvements like proper widescreen should already be done.

I'd definitely be happy to replace my non-Steam shortcut with an official release.

Holy crap, Ys Chronicles is awesome!

I never played Ys 1 and 2 before because I didn't like the idea of the bump system.

But because I did like Ys: Oath in Felghana and wanted to support XSEED, I bought Ys Chronicles+ anyway.

I tried it and was blown away by the awesomeness of these games. The bump system is actually very fun and how the game looks and sounds is just great. The whole experience is just awesome. I really didn't expect to like the first two Ys games this much. Now I also appreciate Ys Origin more for it's story.

The only problem is that I'm running out of Ys games to play. After Ys Chronicles, Origin, Oath in Felghana and Ark of Naphitism, the only English one left is Ys Seven. Though Celceta does come out sometime this year, if I'm correct.
Unfortunately I don't really like to play on the PSP, because my hands get cramped after a while.

Maybe I should pick up the Chinese PC version of Ys Seven. I heard you could use the language files from the PSP version to translate the story.

I don't know the specifics but I hear that version isn't very good.

If you don't mind importing, you can always import Ys IV for SFC/SNES or Ys IV for the PC-Engine CD/TurboGrafx-CD. Each is a different game and both have English patches available.

I finally beat Ys Origin last night with the final character and it's soooo good. I actually teared up a little but don't tell anyone.

So I decided to give Nightmare difficulty a shot in Ys Origin... Do you just earn like no money on this difficulty or what? Medium SP crystals that were worth 50 at this point in the game on Normal are still worth only 1 on Nightmare. I understand they want to make it hard but come on.

But I've made it to the Guilty Fire so far with EX Yunica with only the Epona fight posing any real problem so I'm happy with myself.

Hoping to knock out both the "Beat the game on Nightmare with all 3 characters" and "Complete the game with all EX Characters" thing in one (well, 3) go(es). Hopefully they stack.

Yeah, SP is essentially disabled in Nightmare mode, you have to make with what little is in chests.

There is supposed to be a feature in the game where once you have beat the game with all three characters, each new game you start should allow you the option to start with 10,000 SP for each clear game flag (per character and difficulty) you have. It's either broken on XSEED's version, or I have misunderstood how it works.

chaosblade

Unconfirmed Member
I think it's broken in XSEED's version, and it's a tricky one that Sara hasn't solved yet.

I'm basically waiting on that to get fixed before I try a legit Nightmare attempt though.

chaosblade

Could you elaborate?

I don't remember any specifics, since I don't have it, but apparently people with decent PCs even had trouble with slowdown and stuff. And I know Zero no Kiseki had a ton of issues with sound, which may have carried over to Ys Seven if they used the same backend for that (IIRC it was something extremely dated).

It's just not a good port. And that's assuming you can get it running. The DRM is always-online, locked to one PC/installation, and might even be region locked requiring a proxy, but I don't remember. I know omgfloofy never got her copy working.

I noticed this while playing. (Chronicles window mode if that matters)

Notice how the text box is cut off on the right side, and goes above the border. This happens on the other sides too (left/down) except in reverse.

Extremely tiny minor thing but hey. Already liking 2 more than 1, still loved 1. Getting THE gear was incredibly obtuse though.

Actually wanted to show off my love of burning villagers with the fireballs

Yeah, I'm another person who couldn't even get it running. No matter how hard I tried, it just... crashed and burned.

Sara's a miracle-worker, though, so it's always a possibility for future release. But we'd also prefer not to KILL her, so I think we should give her a little break first. ;)
