So here's the deal: I'm a poor college student (yeah yeah, I know you've heard it a million times) and I really enjoyed Ys 7, so because of that, I'm thinking about getting this. However, I'm not entirely sure. I mean, if I get this, I probably won't get any other game this year. All I know is that I want a PSP game. How does this compare to Ys 7? More or less fun? Better or worse story? I'd really appreciate it if you guys could give me your thoughts on it and if it's worth buying. I'm leaning toward yes at the moment because it seems to be pretty fun.

Better gameplay, better fun, less (so better) story.

It's SO worth buying, though a few things may be a step BACK from Ys Seven, but they're good steps back in some cases (less bloat, tighter overall experience, great replayability).

Experience is relative to the monster's level compared to Adol's, yes, but I'd imagine gold is fixed.. though I have never checked.

Oath is an overall better game in almost every aspect imaginable.

Two big things to consider: Seven has a larger focus on story, if that actually matter to you and it's technically longer if that will affect your buying decision, though most of that is with padding and bloat. Seven looks better, ESPECIALLY comparing PSP versions.. that might be the only thing it has over Oath.

The story is straightforward and nothing special but the gameplay is my favorite in any Ys game including 7. The soundtrack also beats any Ys game as well.

Like Skittles says above, there are some steps back but they are good steps back. Probably the only complaint I have about Oath is its length. It felt short to me coming off of 7 but this was also my second play through of the game. Theres loads of replay value though so its easily worth the money.


Is there an official timeline or anything for Ys? Id like to see one. Storyline isnt a huge role of the series but I still want to know where things fall.

I just assumed it was 1, 2, Oath, Mask of the Sun, 5, 6, 7. Dawn isn't canon, so it's disregarded.

Didnt the narrator say that Oath takes place 3 years after Adol begun his adventure? And didnt Geis in Ys 7 say that it was 6 months (damn my memory!) since he last saw Adol meaning that Ark was that many months prior to 7?

All I know for sure is that Origins is 700 years before 1 and 2 (wiki states this with no source though) and that Oath is 3 years after 1 and 2.

I preferred seven over it as there was too much platforming for my tastes. The music is really good, but nothing that compared to the greatness of the Desert of despair. It’s the best orchestration of Ys III yet though.

Still the Dawn of Ys has the best story IMO.

Yes! Beat Guilen and Gyalva today! Took me a while how to avoid most of Gyalva attacks, like his horizontal charge and laser attack but once I did it was easy. Much easier than Guilen which I was only had 9 hp left when I killed him.

was kinda on the fence with my feelings toward this game for the first few dungeons... running around and killing stuff rocked, but the bosses were more annoying than challenging. i think i'm finally getting the hang of things and i'm liking it a lot more now after stomping

i loved Ys Seven the whole way through, kinda wished it had been longer actually and more normal enemies that were challenging. Oath excels in that regard, definitely feel like I have to be on my toes for every encounter. i think playing on hard might have been a slightly masochistic choice...

I think you'll like Ys I and II. It's a very different battle system than Oath, but it's so lovably old school, I couldn't help but love the shit out of it.

Beat the shit out of the boss of the last statue, and the story has kicked into high gear. Nearing the end ~~~

I've gotten a few hours in, and I'm really enjoying it. It's nice to have such control over the character, and some platforming/falling through holes. It's tight it's fast, fun combat and I like tiny sprites in a game

I don't think you can miss any quests since you can go back anywhere at any point. The ones I remember off the top of my head:

- Giving metal to a guy in town in exchange for money. After a few times he'll give a ring.
- Trade that ring to a person in the inn to recieve an item (the one that makes your boost last longer I think?)
- Get four leaves to heal the animals and you get a life potion.
- Search some metal a little girl hid and you get to keep it.
- Find Bob's pendant and get a crystal to see in dark places.
- Find a hammer near the end of the game to get the best shield.
- Go to the castle after defeating Gyalva and you'll have to escort a kid back to the castle safely. You get an item that makes monsters drop more stuff.

As for the Terra Bracelet, if I remember correctly there was one rock in the volcano to the right of where you end up if you fall during the dungeon, one near the second boss of the mines and another in one of the exterior corridors in the ruins.

Also, it seems Chronicles will be released around February and it won't be getting an LE Apparently there'll be something to complete the spines as a pre-order bonus. I wonder if it is because they blew their load with Ys Seven's or because of low sales...

Eh, not really. Ys I and II don't have jumping, and you attack by ramming into enemies. The battle system is very simplistic, and puzzles are often solved by using items that reveal hidden passages and the like.

That makes it sounds like I dont like the old ys games. I love them, actually.

I just got to him.. and it must have took me over 50 tries to kill the last boss.

Nightmare is a bitch, and coming to that bat boss was like a kick in the balls. I wanted to get out of that area so bad.

Yeah, I have Ys Complete sitting on my shelf. My fondest memory of playing through Ys 1 is on TG16, though.

Nope. Ramming is your only means of murder in Ys I & II.

Nope. The only way to attack is moving, it's also best if you do it at an angle instead of head-on because then you're less likely to get hit at the same time (that's why the guy keeps circling enemies). You can do that in the already released DS versions, though, but those have a number of issues and aren't nearly as good.

Ewww, no. The DS version is terrible. Wait for the PSP version if you dont want to play on VC or PC.

The VC version is pretty cheap, if I remember correctly. You should try it.

As much as I love Ys and ALWAYS have since the TG16 version, Ys to me is what it is NOW (Ark, Oath, Origin and Seven). Ys I & II Chronicles is definitely a love letter to the originals and the best version of the first two games without giving them a complete Oath style reimaging, but it is a product of its time. It's there for fans of the originals and maybe certain fans of just old school gaming in general.

Ys I & II Chronicles is definitely a love letter to the originals and the best version of the first two games without giving them a complete Oath style reimaging, but it is a product of its time. It's there for fans of the originals and maybe certain fans of just old school gaming in general.

Certainly. I don't think anyone is going to say that Ys I&II is indicative of the series. It is a fantastic way to celebrate the roots of the series, though.

EDIT: I was skeptical at first, but those 1&2 combat system actually works nicely once you know what to do. Actually takes some skill too.
