Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim PC |OT| - Re-Release of the Far West Ocean

Yeah, so glad 8 will have jumping back. I doubt they will go back to this more pure action oriented, solo style though, which disappoints me greatly.

I definitely want to get Nayuta soon, level based Falcom action sounds nice.

Is that item missable by any chance o_O

Hm... it might be. I don't think you *need* it to progress, it just makes things easier.

Thing is, much later in the game that boss gets replaced by an even stronger version, which drops different loot. Or perhaps not until after you beat the first one, in which case it isn't missable. I guess I don't really know the answer, I never tried to finish Limewater Cave without getting the bell.

Try looking at other Falcom titles. Nayuta no Kiseki on the PSP recently got a fan translation and is also pretty good, but the game's structure is level-based instead of dungeons and fields. It has fantastic gameplay though.

Also, Ys VIII so far seems to mix both this style and the Seven/Celceta party stuff, so I'm guessing you can play as Adol like he is in Oath/Napishtim too (plus, there's even more mobility for platforming with air dashes and stuff).

Thanks, I'll check that out. Is Nayuta playable on the Vita? And Seven is playable on the Vita right? I get confused about Vita/PSP compatibility.

I don't know about that actually =P, I'm pretty sure Seven is, but I don't know if Nayuta is (should be though).

Alternatively, I can confirm both of them emulate perfectly on PPSSPP. Nayuta is actually very pretty there.

I'm not sure I'll be able to figure out dash jumping.

edit: nvm. Thanks, Aeana.

edit2: I can't stop laughing. I had the dash jump wrong, but still managed to get the first chest in the ruins. Just finally figured it out and got two more.

Finished the game, I'm glad I did so as I appreciate it more now that I have played every other game in the series, it's amazing how they pulled Oath and Origin afterwards which are vastly superior games.

Warping makes the game so much better, but I believe the biggest problem this game has is how you have to grind at times, but there are some pretty good grinding spots that makes it nearly effortless to get those levels you need. Game is easy as hell in Normal but in Hard/Nightmare... oh boy.

Overall, the game is great even if it's one of the weakest entries of the series. Thinking back about how this was the first Ys game Falcom had done in 8 years and how it basically saved the series is pretty cool.

Also, Isha is pretty cute.

I'm thinking of replaying Seven now, as I'm in the need of more Ys.

Fuck this limewater cave boss, fuck it straight to hell. Who the fuck thought this boss up?
I can't even jump attack to charge up my ability, fucking hell.

I'm dying to that giant bee boss, and after this i'll have to resume the limewater cave.

You're not helping. >_>

Does anyone elses sound cut out after anywhere between ten and thirty minutes ingame? I just ran Steam's File Integrity check and that didn't find any errors. Also don't have this problem with any other game. Very annoying since Ys music is sooo good :/

Limewater Cave is nothing compared to going in the endgame underleveled. Don't even know what the point is with those save points. Grinding and being a few hours a way from completion, but not standing a chance in the last battles are probably my least favorite things about this game.

Especially the lockdown is very bad.

Unlike Oath, the last bosses in this are dead easy. I beat it at level 50 and didn't feel like I had to grind. The real grind is that stupid optional boss...but there's almost zero reason to do that.

That boss protecting the thunder weapon is RNG dependant as fuck. In my first try literally all he did was jump around for 3 minutes straight, destroying just about every foothold I had.

In my second try he almost excusively used his spinning attack with the long windup and long cooldown, allowing me to kill him effortlessly. WTF

Sound error also seems to insist on staying, can't play longer than 30min without having to restart the game to fix the sound. This is annoying :/

EDIT: Seems like the sound bug occurs randomly during regular gameplay and always when I die and choose to Retry in the overworld.

WHOEVER DESIGNED THIS FUCKING DASH JUMP SECTION IN THE RUINS OF TIME NEEDS TO DIE IN A FIRE THIS MECHANIC IS SO GOD DAMN STUPID AHHHHHHHH

THAT WAS ALL FOR A CAPULA WATER?! AHHHHHH

Man, I'm finding the game considerably more difficult than Oath or Origin. I'm playing on hard mode, and I got... well, exactly what I asked for, I guess. It's pretty tough at times.

In any case, though, I'm still loving it.

So did the giant plant mini boss thing in the forest north of the beach have any actual value in killing because he was waaaay too annoying to have no reward or purpose.

I didn't think it was that bad. At least it doesn't expect you to do diagonal dash jumps. Right?

I can dash jump on command all the damn time, except on the stupid pillar thing where every god damn time Adol would refuse to dash jump and do the stupid half jump right off the cliff.

Don't stop at Capla Water, you can find some other goodies in that area using the dash jump. Also a note about the Capla Water
you can trade it to a guy at the inn, he gives a nice item for it.

That was my first thought. Funnily enough, you only need to get 2 treasure chests close to each other which offer better items :p

For reals though, how did they come up with the dash jump and why?

Yeah I got all the items in the dungeon, I was just frustrated after failing the same jump like 15 times in a row when I would literally dash jump from where you fall to the jump only to not dash jump when it mattered most -.-

And I got the hammer the moment I walked into town, guess you're not supposed to get it that early but thanks to all items being replaced by Capla Water you have plenty when you first get to port.

For people having trouble with the dash jump, a friend of mine came up with a solution. I'll quote him here:

One way to fix this issue is to install the following 3rd party program:

http://www.autohotkey.com/

And use the following script with it (written by Slaynie -- use keys U, H, J and K to jump in 4 different directions):

+F12::Suspend

$u up::
SendInput {Up down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Up up}
Sleep 200
SendInput {Up down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Up up}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z down}{x down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z up}{x up}
return

$h up::
SendInput {Left down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Left up}
Sleep 200
SendInput {Left down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Left up}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z down}{x down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z up}{x up}
return

$k up::
SendInput {Right down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Right up}
Sleep 200
SendInput {Right down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Right up}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z down}{x down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z up}{x up}
return

$j up::
SendInput {Down down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Down up}
Sleep 200
SendInput {Down down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {Down up}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z down}{x down}
Sleep 25
SendInput {z up}{x up}
return

Apparently, it works every time!

...Of course, if you use this, you're losing some "street cred." So it's definitely a tradeoff. But hey... I'll probably use it in my next playthrough! Screw street cred! ;)

When it comes to challenging Majunuun, what would you guys say one should put more priority in: Vitality, Power or Defense Seeds? Recommended level? Doable in Catastrophe mode?

Finished the Ruins of Lost Time, and boss. Game is definitely not as well polished as Oath, but it's still a blast and satisfies an itch only Oath (and Origin) can satisfy. Game atmosphere trumps design and balance issues here. I'm definitely glad we have a warp option now but it's also a little sad because I like wandering around the islands too while I'm backtracking - Metroid style (seriously though, I'm glad it's there).

Echoing complaints about some platforming sections in the ruins. The very difficult sections are all optional of course, but those could have been made a little more merciful. The problem's not distance but precision. The ends of the broken bridges have little lips, you need to drop down to to jump from but you have only frames before charging off them to plummet to the floor below you to make the jump. If the whole bridge was flat the time frame to make the jump would be easier. The precision jump is the point, I'm sure. For me it's too tough.

I'm also finding that enemies scale up faster than you do, and that yeah the boss in the ruins is kinda RNG-based. He's not too bad though. I died several times, but allot of it was at least partly my fault for not dodging and jumping at the right times. Things do look they can go bad for you if you get a bad draw though. I don't think those platforms regenerate.

... I just realized a big reason I like the atmosphere of this game while I was writing this. The world design is identical to a Metroid game (with some FFXII in there haha). A big world to traverse that generally lets you go anywhere where you please except some areas that need key items to open, or a bridge to fix to open a shortcut, or a boss to get to the next area beyond. Oath kinda does it but really it just has a single hub area that connects to everything else. Napishtim lets you go wherever, regardless of whether you're ready or not (FFXII). Quatera's such a great intro level too since it drops you in there, to go right or left, while this exciting adventure track plays in the background.

You get lots of Exp for it. I was Lv. 26 and instantly got 2 Lv. Up when I beat it.

It's also really easy if you found the Bloody Nail in the Ruins of Time earlier, using Livart's Magic Lv. 2 will kill enough trashmobs to get you back to full health. Also recommend the rune earrings you get just a few screens next to the boss, not being able to be confused is very valuable in this fight.

What difficulty were you on that you beat it at 26? Oh hard catastophe I couldn't kill it till level 29

Normal catastrophe. Livart also was the only weapon that did any damage at all. Around ~16 damage per hit. Getting hit by the boss was 52 damage or so. Basically I was dead in 4 hits from the boss. Jumped around like a madman and spammed the Down Jumping attack. Whenever I got to 100 health or so I let him spawn the trashmobs and used them to heal myself via Bloody Nail with Livart's magic. Took a while but it wasn't really difficult. Healing OP.

Yeah on Hard he has 3000+ hp and did like ~70 making it a 3HKO, plus he could shoot out so many mobs that I literally couldn't move sometimes -.-

Finished the game at like 2am this morning. Loved it.

I don't think Napishtim was as polished as Felghana or Origin, which I suppose isn't surprising given that it came out first. This is most evident in the boss fights, which (at least on hard) can be on the cheesy side and just aren't quite as thrilling as the duels in something like Felghana.

Where I do think the game has the advantage, though, is in it's scope. It feels like you're on a grand adventure in this game, far more than in the other two. There's more open space to traverse, more characters, more dialogue -- Ys VI feels much more like a traditional RPG. And I kinda dig that. I also think Ys VI might have the best soundtrack of the three. It's more electronic than butt-rock, which really kinda works for the game.

The game took me about 12 hours on hard, and I was pretty thorough. I enjoyed every moment of it. I'm completely satisfied.
