Zach Cregger's RESIDENT EVIL Movie Reboot Dated For September 2026 - Promises More Faithful to the Games

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Cregger wrote and directed the fucking awesome Barbarian in 2022.

The upcoming horror feature based on Capcom's game series will "be more faithful to the initial games."

Little is known about the upcoming film aside from that it is co-written by Shay Hatten (Ballerina, John Wick: Chapter 3 & Chapter 4), based on Capcom's massively popular horror game franchise and according to The Hollywood Reporter, will be a “revamp that will take the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games, which date back to 1996.”

Constantin Film (the same studio behind the original Resident Evil film series starring Milla Jovovich) is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

The news that Sony will stay onboard for Resident Evil comes after a competitive bidding war that allegedly saw four studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, competing to land the film.
Here's what Cregger had to say to Deadline:
“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,”

Kulzer adds:
The world of Resident Evil experienced through Zach’s vision is an irresistible feat,”

The original Resident Evil film adaptation premiered in 2002 starring Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and went on to spawn five sequels, plus a soft reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, that premiered in 2021. The franchise has grossed a cumulative $1.2 billion globally in the last twenty three years.

Hopefully he gets it right this time, if not...

Sometimes the director is the problem, but we saw lots of examples with Disney that the studio is the one to blame

There were a lot of other possible events that could have happened in and around Racoon City during the outbreak. I would rather see new characters than trying to redo the stories of the games. For example, I'd enjoy watching the siege of the Racoon City Police Department before RE2.

It just needs a good script.

Overlord is pretty much Resident Evil w/ Nazi's, that movie is freaking awesome.

Overlord kicked ass.

They should just jam Zero and RE1 into a whole movie. Billy & Rebecca trying to survive the train, escape and wind up in the mansion where S.T.A.R.S. arrive. That’s it, then they just fight to survive. Too much plot and lore is gonna be whack, keep it simple, fun, and scary.

Third time's the charm... Hopefully.

If not, i suggest everyone to check out episode 4 of the Netflix series. The whole season is bad, but that episode is the closest thing to the cheese we get in the games. Trust me, just pop in that episode without any context to the story and have a good time.

And, if you feel like watching the whole season, i do think is one of those shows that is so bad is good. At least, Lance Reddick is always a joy to watch.

The worst elements of the Anderson films was the non-game characters. I mean, the game characters mostly sucked in those movies too as they had their relevance and most of their competency sucked away so they could be cheerleaders for Alice. But Alice was the worst, and a lot of the non-game characters besides her were either completely forgettable or downright stupid (“I’m named K-Mart because that’s where they found me” Oh, fuck off!)

Jill, Chris, Leon, Claire, Barry, Rebecca, etc., these are the heroes of Resident Evil. I don’t want a movie focused on some randos. I mean, I give the 2023 Mario movie a lot of shit, but at least it was about the main Mario characters, not what some Toad and Koopa Troopa were up to elsewhere.

The first movie came out in 2002, and him and Milla didn't get married until 2009. In that time, 3 movies came out... which makes Paul look like a major simp.

Zack Cregger from Whitest Kids You Know? If he directed Barbarian, I'm in. I enjoyed that movie.

If any RE movie rises above the Milla movies, I'll be in shock. Were they great? Absolutely not. Good? Also no. But they did at least have the value of a $5-$8 movie ticket back then. I remember walking out of the 3rd or 4th one with Claire, and my friends and I being surprised that it was actually good/fun.

I actually enjoyed the second one the most, despite potentially being the worst actual movie. I liked it simply because Nemesis actually looked like Nemesis. They also had Carlos and Nikolai (kind of).

Uhh, that's it, I guess. I didn't have the courage to watch the Raccoon City movie, but they apparently cast the same plank of wood from the movie as Ada in REm4ake. I got the whole Gold Edition for $30 recently, so I guess Separate Ways is $5ish. It's been fun, but every time Ada speaks, I can't help but roll my eyes. What the fuck, Capcom? Do you not audition actors before hiring them?

If twenty years ago someone told me that one of the Whitest Kids U Know guy is going to direct one of the better modern horror movies someday AND a Resident Evil reboot, I would not believe them. But Barbarian shows his comedy roots - the whole film is lowkey hilarious so I wonder how he handles that cheeseball franchise.

Barbarian was good in the first half, the second...well, it has problems. But yeah, he can make a far better movie than the previous ones.

Next movie being more faithful...and better movie I hope. I mean, Welcome to Racoon City was more faithful than the Jovovich movies...and it was even worse. The key is adapting one single game (not three or four at the same time like WtRC) and just making an atmospheric and fun horror movie with it. This and I hope he understands the differences between making RE and Barbarian. RE isn't about giving a message, an allegory or being political of any kind and even less about moving the characters to smash it in your face. Just give a cheesy, scary and decently made zombie/monster movie with a creepy location, sexy and memorable characters and tense action with a Weyland-Yutani comic-book cousin in the background. Oh, and of course...not more forced diversity at cost of anything else. Good cast and performances first!

I understand what you're saying, but Anderson isn't working on these films. We have a low sample size on this one for new characters. I'd rather roll the dice.
