I know the release of BvS and the backlash was terrible for him, BUT, since then things have evolved I think.
If he can come back with his original script and with Snyder as the main producer, I can see this happening (and the rumor say this is happening)
It's no secret that Ben Affleck loved working with Zack Snyder and they share the same vision for the universe.
It's still a dream, but if JL is critically acclaimed and recognized as a good movie, I don't see WB going with the Whedon version as canon...

It wasn't the backlash as much as him trying to promote other projects and the media CONSTANTLY hammering him on Batman. His entire press tour for Live By Night was nothing but Batman questions. That drove him to drink, he went into rehab, lost his wife, his directing career was entirely derailed. He'll pick up the phone and record his ADR lines for this, but he's past superhero movies now.

I was looking forward to a full Affleck batflick. I think the Batman action is best part of BvS.

i can understand Affleck's stance. right now i am getting super into James Bond and learning about the series. Sean Connery fell into a very similar trap, after making 3 movies, he was shooting You Only Live Twice, and the press and fan demand got to be too much, the desire for Bond too suffocating, it was imposing on his own life outside of filming. he would give interviews and want to talk about acting and his life and people would just be asking questions of James Bond the character. so the actor feels trapped.

while in Japan promoting the film, he was asked a question about if he finds Japanese women sexy, and his negative response (1960s being a time when the mini skirt & more revealing street fashions were a thing in US/UK but in Japan was still fairly conservative) was taken out of context and came across as disrespectful. so there was a big whole controversy he had to answer to. on top of that people mobbed him for photographs, and a picture of him on the toilet ended up in print. it was just totally out of control. it must be like being in the middle of an insane asylum tbh. he signed up to act, not deal with that bs. thus he quit the series after You Only Live Twice, tho he later came back for two separate reunions.

so i totally understand if actors don't want to be trapped in a role. same with Michael Keaton, who backed out of Batman Forever, after reading the godawful script, where the first line Batman says includes the words "I'll get drive through" because it was written largely for McDonald's. that and the loss of director Tim Burton tipped him off that Returns would be the last one he would do.

That's exactly what happened with Affleck. He directed that mob movie Live By Night coming off Best Picture for Argo. The movie wasn't good, but all anyone on the press tour asked him about was Batman. It became annoying for everyone because you could see how pissed off he was getting. He was there to talk about a movie he directed, and no one would ask about that. They just asked about capeshit and drama surrounding it.

WB has Reeves set for a Batman trilogy. First time since Nolan they've done something like that. They're not going to undercut him and Pattison for a different solo Batman movie.

A couple friends of mine didn't think it needed to happen because they honestly thought it was just a director's cut... I educated them on all the crap that went on and now they're looking forward to it... ESPECIALLY after they found out Darkseid is coming!

These friends are older than I am (I'm already 45) so getting them to see that it IS something different than what we initially got is a win... We're all long time comic readers.

A lot of the folks who got this catastrophically wrong are trying to salvage their disproven clairvoyence by saying this is only coming out because all of the stars impossibly aligned with HBO Max and COVID.

The reality is that this was the best organized and executed fan movement for this breed of campaign. What the haters still can't process is that a lot of people really do like these movies and there's a lot more of us than they think.

I mean, Deborah Snyder said it was because of COVID-19 they could get this done this way:

The novel coronavirus struck, and Hollywood all but shut down in mid-March. Says Deborah, "People thought, 'It won’t be possible to ramp up, and that maybe this should go on the back burner.' But we said, 'No, this is the right time' because our visual effects houses that rely on so much are running out of work, so now is the time to be doing this." Whether it goes on the front or backburner is not the same as what greenlit the project. Per the same Hollywood Reporter article, they called the Snyders the day after JL's second anniversary, when another huge push for RTSC went through. They have already been doing a lot of legal legwork on this, for a very long time, before they could even got the point of deciding when to announce or go full steam ahead.

The talking point that COVID is one of the aforementioned stars that had to align is untenable.

I wish the DC movies didn't collapse in on themselves before even having a chance to take off. I think it would've been a pretty interesting 'take it or leave it' thing (with Snyder at the helm), as opposed to Marvel's approach in virtually perfecting a formula so much it appeals to the vast majority of people's broad tastes.

The phenomenon that is this movie's production easily eclipses everything else in it or around it.

If nothing else, I'm glad we're finally getting the final arc of this saga. Looks like the mad lad did it, somehow. Fingers crossed.

I watched Suicide Squad again last night. I remembered it being worse than what I thought of it now. I mean, it’s not good, but outside of the last 30 minutes it’s a pretty entertaining flick. The problem is the last 30 minutes are just terrible, imo of course.

Ayer's original cut was completely different. They test screened it and most people liked it more. But WB hired a trailer house to recut it and try to turn it into Deadpool.

The montage at the beginning that's ripping off GotG isn't there. Instead all of the flashbacks happen in chronological order beginning with June becoming Enchantress. Then there's A LOT more Joker and an entire fight sequence between him and the Squad in the subway. Also Joker and Harley's relationship is 100% abusive where he pistol whips her and tosses her from the helicopter (lines up better with the opening of Birds of Prey).

The original Comic Con trailer represents his cut more than the other trailers did:

I imagine that being more symbolic of the direction they were taking the film in.

But I still take Ray Fisher's testimonies with a grain of salt. He seems to get caught up in the moment from the little I've seen and heard of him.

The only movies he’s in are literally BvS and JL (it sounds like he might not be in The Flash now). It’s all he has. So he’s shitting on one of the guys who’s still producing the DC movies, meanwhile Momoa knows how to play the game and gets to cash a check voicing Frosty the fucking Snowman for them.
