Are his parents at least alive? I'm not counting on his sister though because it's better to have no sister than a sister like Alec had.

That I don't know. I want to assume that it would be "yes" as neither he nor his sister are (or in his case, were) all that old - but they also may be on the sister's side for all we know.

What annoys me is: didn't Alec have friends? I mean real friend. Maybe Relatives? Anyone who cared about him enough to go on and press charges against Zoe?

I must say it's impossible to exist a single person in this world who doesn't have anyone who cares about him or her in this life. Even the shittiest people around have at least someone who cares about them.
Looks like he had none... Even his sister threw his dead body under the bus for some brownie points...

And it may not be super hard to believe it: he had a difficult personality with a mild instability and mental problems, all of his dev "friends" are or want to be nose deep in the asses of the likes of Zoe and no one dares to get out of the line in fear of becoming the next outcast.

I find the lack of testosterone distubing - no one has the balls to say "fuck you guys, i'm out of this shit"? Are they really so cucked and brainwashed into submission or do they all have some dirt on one another, like MAD nuclear style?

They ALL have problems, thats why they hold onto that cult for dear life. It's comfort, it's a bottomless hole they try to fill. They don't really think about anyone beside themselves anymore. They don't take a stance of *moral superiority* for anyone but themselves. You can focus. You don't have to look at larger problems. You don't have to think.

It's also why I think none of them actually know what friendship and love truly is. Which is horrifying.

I DELIBERATELY omitted?!? Wow- not at all. I was not even aware of the surrounding text when I was cropping. I simply had to put the start of the cursor drag somewhere.

Fair play then, I have no issue apologising if that's the case. This is just the day and age we live in I guess

Perhaps but I'M not defending her. There are no sacred cows when it comes to respecting the truth.

I actually was banned a while ago for making a joke. This person had an avatar of a female face and her cat was in front of her lower face and I said, 'You have a pussy on your mouth' and that was enough for a ban and a snarky moderator rebuke. It was enough for me to go, 'Ok- I'm done with this place...'

It SEEMS people are still insistent on kindness here (yay) but not so uptight about crude jokes? If that's the case, I'm glad to be back :).

I'm told the mods back then were horrendous. These days they're pretty spot-on, removing spam, abuse, racism, etc but letting conversation flourish. And that's why I'm here.

I have an interest in truth. Speaking the truth is feminism. Speaking out against hegemonic power is an act of feminism. Simply because one is female, and even if one calls oneself a feminist, does not mean one occupies a female space. Words are words. I am not a tomato just because I say I am.

Oh thank god. There are some sane feminists out there. Gonna follow you on Twitter just for the quote alone. Welcome to NeoGAF. :)

Id also like to thank David and Anna from coming by. I don't know how to do the name tag things.

Yeah nice to see them drop by - to tag someone, just @ and then their username immediately afterwards. Wait a few seconds and the context search should bring up a list with partial matches.

A AnnaSlatz , What are you thoughts on the idea that people like her claim that twitter shaming is the proper place for this because they are sure the police don't care? I have no doubt there are issues with the police but I still feel like the proper course of action is to go to the police because either it will get solved or then because it will be bungled and we can see the issues and fix them int he future. Avoiding them allows us the oppurtunity to do neither and also just feels scummy because it calls back to the lynch mob days. It's deciding that justice has failed when you never even tried them so lets do justice our way.

It's not so unbelievable. Men don't have great support networks generally. Add to that working in an environment of people who are of the same ilk as ZQ, a family in the same mold and you have a recipe for being alone in the world, with nobody to fight your corner, nobody to pick you up when you're down. And that's what leads to suicide.

Absolutely - honestly I know feminism used to be about lifting women up rather than dragging men down but I was beginning to wonder if there was any of that side of it left - it seems to exist in the older generation but be entirely missing in the younger one. Not knowing A AnnaSlatz I can't comment which age group she falls into but it's good to hear a voice that is closer to that older style of feminism either way. Thank you for taking time to investigate properly, you may not call yourself a journalist but you're doing what journalists used to do, and that's good enough for me.

I wouldn't wish being "cancelled" on my worst enemy.

Well, if Alec really had some issues himself, it is quite easy to push people away and isolate oneself, even to the point where you lose contact to your family. I am in the same situation, basically. If I die, I'll be found by my landlord because I stopped paying rent, lol.

Anyway, it is actually quite easy to not have a network of people who care, IMHO.

I wouldn't wish that to anyone either.

But you are here. Still standing. Yo had to had someone special to back you up otherwise it would be so fucking unbelievable to bear with this pain alone until now.

I still think the worst thing a person could have in one's life is to having no one to care about you. Not having virtually anyone to stand for you. This is the ultimate misery. I don't want Alec's situation to become the patient zero of this #MeToo movement.

This is the age of everyone being connected to everyone but very few In touch with real relationships. Most people are too worried about how many likes and followers they get

I find it stranger that all the circunstances surrounding the suicide have been kept in absolute secrecy. I mean, i´m sure someone like Alec would have left at least a note detailing the reasons for his desition....

Jon Ronson‘s The Last Days of August is a good illustration of the pitfalls of inevestigative work on a topic like this. It doesn’t take long for him to be inundated by speculation, hearsay and he even runs into one of those people with a conspiracy theory chart

Sorry if someone already posted this but I’m travelling at the moment and only had time to skim, couldn’t see it mentioned, her Twitter has been back up for awhile though and she posted another text document, having trouble uploading it on current connection but the Twitter is open so you can read it there.

Also some serious white washing of the replies seems to have been taking places, seen dozens of even mildly critical replies being wiped.

It's very likely that Alec's friends felt trapped themselves.

If they dared to speak in his defence, or were to be found to be supporting him - they'd likely be tarred with that same brush. #BelieveAllWomen - or else.

Personally, I think this whole situation should give birth to some kind of organisation that supports people who have been accused in the public realm, with no evidence.

One that provides information, security, and general assistance to those that aren't in a position to get that themselves. With a view to then push the accusations into the normal, legal route - allowing the truth of the matter to be explored, and consequences enacted for those that are false.

Wow, this thing has more twists and turns than a Democratic debate

Heh, she says "I refuse to be sorry for naming a broken stair".

Really sums up her stance on the value of other humans. A broken stair to climb over. That's it.

Hope she stays off of social media and sticks to safe spaces and mental wards, but something tells me she'll happily return when there's a whiff of cash in the air.

Yeah I was amazed she used the stair analogy again.. how exactly does she intend that to sound? Is this a set phrase that has a different meaning in their world than it sounds to the rest of us. Because to me it just sounds incredibly callous and exploitative to call a troubled ex a “broken stair”.

NPD's sure do project. This is disgusting, but not unexpected.

Makes me subscribe to the 'laws of attraction'. Look at all the darkness she attracts her way, even down to the name of the DC comic deal.

You can't make this shit up man.

Just for anyone who's unclear with the metaphor: A broken stair refers to something that is clearly dysfunctional, but rather than being fixed, it is just accepted. Like a single broken stair in a staircase.

Here it refers to the idea that Alec was more or less known widely in industry circles as an abuser, but rather than fixing the issue, people made personal adjustments to avoid him while letting him be.

Sounds like mad projection to be honest. I doubt anyone is getting too friendly with Quinn if they can help it, but damned if they call her out.

Here’s the link anyways

I can't believe there are 8.8k likes on that post. Who are all these people believing and supporting her? It's a very scary thought that you can drive a person to death with words and yet have an army of people behind you.

And I bet a lot of these people are giving her money on Patreon to do god knows what.

And now I read that DC is asking her to write a comic. I'm so mad really!!!!

What world are we living in that when one drives a person to death with words, you get more supporters (emotionally and financially) AND you get a dream job of actually writing for DC Comics.

Fucking Monica Lewinsky replied to her? WTF is going on.

And broken stair? I have never heard that used before. Especially in this context it's super creepy.

Just read her new tweet. I've never felt so grossed out about someone on twitter before. How someone can be this inhumane. It's all about her, her, her and her. Thst sentence with the 'broken stairs'. wow ...

Yeah it is worrying. What’s more worrying was the amount of dissenting tweets being wiped out and the instantaneous outpouring of support. You can’t tell so much now but for the next hour or so after she reactivated it was a complete whitewash.

She may have missed her calling in PR, probably an industry she’d have had actual talent in, unlike games and comics.

Ever the victim. Poor Chelsea, I can't imagine how hard this whole situation has been for her. If people hadn't stopped paying attention to her, I doubt she would have felt the need to publicly name someone over an incident that, by her own admission, had been talked through and forgiven with the accused. She had no other reason to the name the individual other than malice. She saw another woman get twitter attention and she had to get back in the minds of the public and get her slice again. Hopefully she's pleased with her actions.
