Zombies vs. Nerds
There are a colony of nerdy D&D-playing medeivalists who gather in Mount Royal Park every Sunday to run around screaming and slapping each with swords made of duct-taped iron bars and shields made out of the lids of recycling bins. Shit, there are even dudes with nerf arrows, flails, battle axes and big fuckin’ hammers. One guy had on an entire suit of chain mail armor.

Anyway, a cabal of local hipsters decided that this Sunday was going to be different. This Sunday, the hipsters were going to dress up like zombies and come marching out of the woods to engage the nerds in glorious battle.

A friend of mine sent me this link and I just had to share. Initially it just seems kind of 'meh', but then you keep going through the flikr pool and you see just how many people they got to turn out for this. The fact that the role players also had no idea that this was coming adds to the fun. Topped off by the zombies then over running the local McDonalds... I really don't think I could ask for a better wednesday link.

No they were completely unaware that a horde of zombies were gather in the woods to decimate their gathering. They just stormed out of the woods from all angles encircling them. Hilarity ensued.

Yeah I wish there was video so we can get an idea of how the roleplayers went with it. Did they continue to stay 'in character', or did they just get really confused.

I'm also curious if the Zombies were played as the slow moving shuffling kind, or if they went for the fast deadly ones.

See, I'd assume the nuts in faux-renaissance gear would have whacked away at the zombies. I'm curious to what exactly happened... how many of each group were there? Do the twits in tights have a message board?

(Side note: Isn't calling those guys "nerds" an affront to true nerds everywhere? Can't we call them something else?)

Damn, I love it. The zombies should invade a Civil War re-enactment next.
Brilliant idea TA!!! We should start a zombie army and invade war re-enactments, renaisannce festivals, shakespear plays, pow-wows! Oh man, sign me up.

They're more like geeks. Nerds are smarter than geeks, geeks just have a weird focus on techno/fantastic subjects.

I think there's currently some sort of movement to redefine "nerd" and "geek". I've always been used to the idea of "nerd" meaning intelligent, with a lack of social skills, and "geek" meaning just a lack of social skills (or someone wishing to be a nerd, but without the mental capacity). However, I've been told that some folks are now using "geek" to mean fixiated on sci-fi/fantasy/computer science, and "nerd" to mean the same but without the social skills.

Or is that just the way the two groups relate? Nerds see geeks as a lower form, and geeks see nerds as a lower form?

Kick ass. I only breezed through the forum listed, instead being focused on the images of Zombie vs Legolas wanna-bes.

I would agree that nerds is probably not the right name for this group, but I figured I'd stick with the tag line from the site I was taking the info from.

I have always understood the nerds to be the intelligent social inept. The geeks to be the dumb eccentric socially inept. And the dorks to be the funny nearly normal slightly socially inept.

Nerds are socially inept smarties.
Dorks are just socially inept.
Geeks are socially inept folks obsessed with a subculture, technology, or media.

That's some funny ass shit.

I can't believe there's a bunch of live action d&d people at the park playing hobbit.

and some of those zombie people have been waiting for an opportunity to be dirty for a good cause for some time, you can tell.

I always thought nerds and hipsters overlapped with each other. Or at least most of the hipsters I know are also nerds...whatever really. Still funny I s'pose.
