Every time I start it up now I get a black screen unless I Alt+enter to a window mode. Direct X is up to date, using the latest version of ZSNES, but I have no idea what's wrong

you don't have nview activated?

What's that?

drivers for nvidia geforce cards. If you mess with the clone options I sometimes get a black screen on my computer when I play games and movies. I don't think that's the problem though.

can we even post about this here?

If people can talk about modding Xboxes and having their programming illegally changed, then I can assume it's fine to talk about emulators

And I usually end up buying (or in some cases already own) most of the games I emulate, except for stuff that had a print run of about a week or was unreleased, or stuff that would require me to get $2000 worth of college courses in Japanese to play

And furthermore

E. Emulation/Piracy

The topics of emulation and piracy, including the technical nature of emulators and ROM images, hardware modification technology, as well as their effect on the industry as a political topic are deemed to be generally acceptable.

I think this is wrong. Its STILL PIRACY. The only reason why its seems to be okay so far is because a) its Nintendo and GAF loves a good Nintendo cruxification; anything goes.

It's illegal to possess the ROMS of commercial games you don't own, period. Even for evaluation purposes, even if you intend to eventually purchase the original game. Unless you're given permission to do a test drive, you can't drive a car off a dealer's lot and drive it around for a week even if you intend to buy it. And the copyright holders of those ROMS have NOT given you express or implied permission to use those ROMS in any way, shape or form if you haven't previously purchased the game.

That said, if you have LEGAL ROMs, then there's nothing wrong with playing THEM on an emulator :)

Yes, I know that. But I can't even fathom where to purchase 90% of the stuff that came out in America, let alone where to get some C-grade RPG made by college students in Japan.

That said, I don't emulate to steal games, but mainly to sate my own curiosity more than anything

Well I personally have zero moral problems playing SNES RPGs that were never released in the US, but have been translated into English by fans. If God had intended me to buy these games, he would have had the clueless dolts release them in the US.

did you fix the problem?

the new versions of zsnes usually open in windowed mode the first time you start it up.

Try changing your video resolution to 16-bit and see if you get any progress.

Already tried that. ZS starts in 512X448 windowed version now and making it full gives me the black

I meant change your pc's video resolution to 16-bit.

like control panel > display properties etc..

I did that too. That does nothing. Maybe I need to do something with the monitor's drivers

Not necessarily. Like a few days ago I just beat NES Final Fantasy for the first time using FCE Ultra. I've got the cart, but getting the system to work consistently and the cart to not lose my save would've taken divine intervention.

I got it now. It was a video driver problem.

Yeah, what is the official stance on ROMs, anyway? Legal if you have a copy of the game too, or illegal all around?

There are emulators for just about every system ever made up until this gen, not just Nintendo....you do realize this right?

duh. but its against the TOS to discuss piracy... I like how the rule applies to :OMG: HAlo2 but its okay to discuss how to make a programme that emulates PIRATED SHIT ... okay.

Yeah but that's different, now you're talking an actual piece of pirated software. Emulators, modchips...they actually have legal uses (I'm not gonna go into how people actually use them) but you get the point.

My original point was this could have easily been a Sega Genesis emulation topic, and you said

It's OK to talk about emulator programs, but don't even think about asking where to get ROMs. I don't see why you have to make this a black-and-white issue -- it's not that simple.

Despite what you might have heard, there are a few reasons which come to mind immediately about legal uses for emulators, and probably more I haven't thought of:

1) Emulating games which you already own. Have an NES cartridge, but your NES broke? Feel like playing a Dreamcast game on your beautiful VGA LCD computer monitor? Go ahead and run the game on the emulator.

2) Developing your own games. Some people -- believe it or not -- still write games for older platforms. There's no way that you could create a physical cartridge, but you could run the new code on an emulator just fine.

As long as people refrain from discussing illegal activity, it's more than fine to discuss emulation.

What's up with all this morality crap about old ass roms now? I remember a while back we used to always post about and discuss emulators, if I had a dollar for every n64 emulation thread we did on the old forum I'd have about...........alot of $dollars! Seriously though, what's with the sudden change of karma here? I remember people used to boast about how many roms they had. (Of course no one ever discussed where they came from back then either! :D )
