Lightning Returns Review Thread

Some of my favorite games got rated 5-7 on the gaming rating spectrum, so I'm not worried in the slightest. I found the demo satisfactory so generally I would enjoy the game, yes?

Not sure why people are acting like these scores are decent, regardless of this being FF or not.

When the best score you can get from a major site is a 7, that's pretty fucking bad.

Story aside it's probably like at least like a 7/10 game anyway.

Go back in time to the psone days and tell people next gen FF games would be getting 5's. People would beat the shit out of you.

Got to play around with a review copy for a few hours and all of these 7's are very generous in my opinion. I know that usually isn't enough time to judge a RPG but the game is seriously flawed. I liked XIII, never got a chance to play XIII-2, and was actually looking forward to trying this game out based on the early impressions.

I guess people who love the Lightning Saga will suffer through the game, but I feel like if it wasnt a Final Fantasy it would be scoring 4's and 5's.

Let me get this straight, you liked FFXIII, which I consider repellent and not worthy of its name, yet you think that this game deserves 4 or 5...?

FFXIII:LR biggest trainwreck in history confirmed!!!!!

It's sad to see such an important brand down in the dust like this.

Dat Toriyama seal of quality.

This douche needs to literally get kicked out of Squeenix, with a boot firmly planted on his ass.

If anything, these low scores have made me more excited for the game.

Final Fantasy XIII Reivews:

IGN 8.9/10
GameSpot: 8.5
Game Informer: 93

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Reviews:

IGN 8/10
Gamespot: 7.5
Game Informer: 80

Lets be honest, the series has only gotten better (At least from a gameplay perspective). Keep the low scores coming! Just means it's a better game as far as I'm concerned.

But despite great battles, they're arguably less important than they've ever been in the series. You don't earn XP and level up through combat, only by completing quests. These range from story-based encounters with classic characters, to countless boring fetch-quests that make me feel like I was stuck in the opening hours of an MMO. If a quest's goal wasn’t combat-related, I found myself avoiding combat, the thing I enjoyed most about Lightning Returns, in favor of making a beeline for the goal that would level me up faster.

This has me worried. I definitely would do the same, avoid battles if they're not worth it.

I am looking forward to the game, but I hope this teaches SE not to try and create additional long running franchises within their established long running franchise. Brand fatigue has taken its toll on XIII, and the first game was divisive enough.

I think all they learned is people prefer corridors more than open non-linear worlds.

Yup 7.0 range after all. It is a shame the game didn't reach the level it was hoping for but it is at least a fun experience. I just want to get off the spinoffs and back to some main entires.

BTW FFXIV 1.0 will always be the lowest scoring FF ever.

5s? No.

But even in its heyday FFs almost never got 10s. 8s and 8.5s were pretty common. I know because it made me rage as a teenager :P

I don't know why I even just finished XIII-2 for this. I didn't really like XIII-2 and this is worse than that? :|

Doesn't someone have a GAF bet over this game scoring the highest of the XIII trilogy?

Perfo?

It's a damn shame that a single person ties up good artists to bring his sub fanfiction.net script to life (at least they seem to show contempt for him by only going for PS2 LOD) and probably kills a good, fast paced combat system by associating it with his shit eclair.

Final Fantasy 7
/10

Someone photoshop Cloud's FFVII AC hair onto that picture and we'd have come full circle since that first FFXIII reveal of Lightning when she was referred to derisively as the female Cloud.

Toriyama should really stop writing stories.

They're terrible and convoluted.

TERRIBLE.

The scores are better than what I expected.

If the other two were reviewed again at this point I would expect their scores to be lower as well, mostly because reviewers know the games are not looked upon fondly.

Oh well, hopefully this will drop in price quickly. I still want to play it but can't afford full price right now.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who actually enjoyed 13 and 13-2. I felt that 13-2 was a huge improvement over 13 even through reviews were lower and I enjoyed the demo for LR so I'll probably still like it.

Pretty good scores considering it probably came from people who are tired of the XIII games and/or felt forced to finish it. Which inevitably leads to a score completely influenced by their view of the other two games and the series on a whole instead of judging a standalone game for what it is. A good sign for the few of us who enjoy the series! Can't wait to play the game and judge it for myself.

XIII-2 had worse scores than XIII but was a much better game according to pretty much everyone..

The press got burned when they handed out 9s to XIII and it backfired. There was no way this was getting more than 7s.

Not too worried about it though. My tastes never align with those of review outlets (huh?... what? ...)

Kinda looking forward to Kotaku's though, enjoyable reads and I like their score-less review system.
