Lightning Returns Review Thread

Avatar bet with PsychoNinja that LR would be the highest rated FF of the entire gen.

I hope PsychoNinja gives him the worst avatar imaginable

I can't help but crack up at the voice acting in the GT review. I'd expect shit like this in some Idea Factory drivel, not one of the most popular Japanese RPGs.

Trying to make a second attempt to play XIII-2 currently, and I honestly mute the scenes a lot of the time. The tone of some of the performances don't even sync up well with the goofy animation.

Welp, sounds like I'll be downloading that Japanese voice pack. Should help with the dialog I reckon, easier to stomach garbage if I don't have to hear it.

The reviews I'm looking from big outlets actually are complaining about character/story for the first time, that wasn't the case in previous games' reviews from same people as faras I remember (like Gamespot's), maybe they hear the complaints this time... lol

Pretty sure a big complaint with XIII-2 was also the story.

Are we seeing the same scores?

I expected nothing higher than a 7, and to see the metacritic down somewhere in the 50s. Knowing that it's a love it or hate it game, and not just an all around shitty game, makes me much less hesitant to buy it considering I enjoy the previous 13 games.

RE6 helped me realize that I can really enjoy games that a lot of people don't like and get poor review scores.

Come to think of it, the only game that I really haven't liked at all was KZ Shadowfall.

Honestly seems like the perfect game for me in this moment.

I stopped caring about Xillia's story half-way through and just wanted to have a fun jRPG with fun combat.

Sounds like LR is a great next step for me.

Apparently you aren't allowed to enjoy FFXIII or its sequels on this board. Sorry Frequency ; ;

C'mon now, no need for a persecution complex. You're allowed to enjoy a game, any game, just don't try to tell people it's actually a good game when it obviously isn't. I enjoyed Dragon Age 2, but I've never gotten crap about it on here because I admit that it's really flawed and had genuine issues. Heck, I think part of the reason I enjoyed it as much as I did was because I went into the game knowing it had problems.

If you like the trilogy, good for you. Just don't try and say the rest of us are too dense to get the plot or just hate it irrationally.

Haha the defenders spin in this thread is hilarious. You may enjoy the game but for critics and majority of people this game is average. Just accept that.

On a side note maybe they should get the memo that instead of copying other games maybe they should understand that stories and characters matter in RPGs and that in their recent flagship game series both of those are shit, for both critics and majority of people. Oh and work on a better direction if you want to make sequels to RPG's there not action games like AC.

Scores are right where I expected them to be. It will probably go even lower. Can't wait to see sales for this game
or lack thereof
.

Depending on how you define fun, it might not be. I've seen the word brutal used a few times in reviews in reference to the combat.

i know me and a few people are getting it off psn so i don't know if those numbers will be counted in npd

Surprisingly positive review from Eurogamer. They say it's the best in the trilogy and only single out the plot as a negative aspect.

Seems to be about where I imagined it would be. I will definitely pick it up on down the line, but I bought Bravely Default last week and next week is DKC so Final Fantasy will have to wait.

It's the first time I've passed on a FF Day 1 since.....ever. I even picked up XIII-2 release day (granted, I took advantage of trade-in programs to get that one cheap)....

I have always been the first person to say FFXIII was a genuinely flawed game. But it is amusing when a game gets actual mixed reviews and this is taken as proof that the game is 100% hot shit rather than, you know: that different people have different opinions.

Reading the body of the reviews and not just the scores, I get the impression that the game is interesting mechanically and can be a lot of fun, but the story is a typical mess. Just in the Japanese sense of typical mess, rather than the western one which at least has expensive voice acting to cover that up.

Except the gameplay, or more specifically the battle system was a plus across the board from pretty much all the reviews.

It's good to see the majority of the reviews saying how the story sucks and how Toriyama shouldn't be writing anymore. Maybe this will get SE to take those complaints more seriously. I liked the characters and background story about the fal'cie, but it could have been handled much better *guilty pleasure*

That said, I'm glad we have a third game and that it got approved. I remember reading at one point that they didn't want to release it or not as a console game? It would have been a shame to have it on smartphones in a different form. I'm going enjoy this game a lot as a FFXIII and XIII-2 fan, even if it isn't the most polished like how it was promised or it doesn't look great :( The game is pre-ordered, I'm dying to play it and conclude the story.

Uh,,, that is not what I read regarding western games.

It was gonna be told in DLC installments. The backlash against XIII-2's story DLC up to May was enough to convince them to abandon that idea.

Most reviews I've read seem to indicate that while the battle system is really fun (I knew this already from playing the demo), the game structure with the side-quests is simply repetitive and not fun at all.

Time to get a new friend

You know, he hasn't beaten the game (got stuck somewhere on the first disk on the PC because of some bug), knows the story and still says it sucks and is one of the worst FF games ever. I have a feeling he'd rather play the original FFXIV before he touched 7 again.

He'd rather play Hyper Dimension Neptunia, Time and Eternity and a few other WTF RPGs before 7.

Going into sub menus. Limit breaks, Pressing up and down to select Technics, magic, items etc......

In most (non boss) fights you could still get through by mashing "attack" over and over.

I'm not saying FFXIII's battle system is flawless (it's not, not by a long shot), but saying there's no depth at all about it is a straight up lie.

I've never understood why SE seems to really struggle getting good voice performances (especially with FF games). They need to fire their voice director or something. Much lower budget games (like the Tales series) have much better acting IMO.
