Lightning Returns Review Thread

The only thing that I take away from the OP and the gametrailers video review is that One day the spoony review will beat them all and will be the best video series ever! :D

In the end I still loved Majora's Mask, but usually hate time constraints. It really depends on the game and how everything is wrapped around such a mechanic. But yeah, we shall see. I am going to dip on in here in a few hours.

Well from reviews and impressions it seems that the time mechanic in this game is pointless.

I think it's over for Light-san. She may get a cameo in KH 3 though.

I could see this happening, but we should remember that a lot of the KH1/2/BBS/DDD cameos were sort of structured around other properties that were getting hyped at the time or were strong in recent memory, KH2 and BBS especially (those games are all about aesthetic tie-ins to FFX-2/Advent Children and Crisis Core, respectively).

The Compilation of FF7 is dead as a doornail, so I don't expect to see it get a ton of play; nor do I expect to see The World Ends With You cameos in KH3.

I wouldn't be *surprised* to see Lightning show up in KH3, but if anything I expect that game's cameos to have a really strong focus on FFXV characters because they'll be coming out around the same time and because Nomura's the one directing both games (and tie-ins can't hurt to raise fan interest in both).

[To expand: KH1 has cameos from FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX characters, since it predated the spinoff/FF7 compilation era, and was mostly about showcasing old Nomura character designs, but the strong fan interest in Sephiroth/Cloud stuff in that game was a part of what got Advent Children off the ground.

KH2 has cameos from FFIV, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, and FFX-2 characters, but the greatest focus in terms of story tie-in was on the PS2-era stuff, Advent Children included.]

Watching the Gametrailers review, and this looks like everything I have come to despise about Square-Enix.
And ugh that voice acting... that lame dialog / writing...

Indeed. Also guess I'm not the only one that noticed that each new FF this gen has looked and ran worse than the previous game (FFXIV on PC the exception, no idea how the PS3 version is there) XIII>XIII-2>LR

FFXIII's gameplay is also quite conservative when you consider all of the ways in which it backtracked from the far more radical FFXII.

But also, the gameplay isn't what people were generally complaining about with regard to FFXIII (outside of the weaksauce summons, I suppose, and the way that using auto-battle is extremely effective). The complaints I heard were mostly about the strict linearity (far worse than in any other previous FF game), lack of towns/NPCs/backtracking, the barebones equipment/leveling system, and the bad story/writing. FFXIII's gameplay is really just fine, IMO, and I don't think many people were complaining about it. This idea that FFXIII just innovated too darn much for those stick-in-the-mud fans is fiction.

The gameplay is limited, that is different than saying that it was conservative or that the game itself was. It tried to do one thing very well to mixed results and in a way I respect it more for that.

My opinion on the matter is that fpr most Final Fantasies (again with the exception of FFXII which came out near the end of the PS2 era resigning it to a similar fate as IX/VI) the gameplay as defined by the combat system is very safe. Final Fantasy XIII's wasn't and threw out a lot of things that had come to define the franchise.

None of this is to say it worked out swimmingly, but then again the linearity of FFX ticked me off too and a lot of people seem to love that. Barring changes to the combat system I don't see a reasonable explanation for that.

XIV runs fine on the PS3, nowhere near as smooth as the PC version but it is certainly playable. I know plenty of people who play on it.

I'd imagine she'll get a cameo in any situation that calls for cameos from old FF games, KH3 included. Badcrumble has a point, though, in that KH FF cameos tend to focus more on more current properties, and the XIII trilogy will be old news by the time KH3 comes out. She might show up, but she probably won't be as important as, say, Auron in KH1.

It was unplayable at some points on launch though. I remember the big FATEs were rather unplayable at the start. It'll probably be better now mind you. I assume they'll have done some patches, and also there won't be thousands of people trying to do the same FATES like when everyone was levelling up.

Parish points that out in the USGamer review- a big reason why XIII was so linear was that the engine sucked at wide open spaces. So when XIII-2 and LR try and do them anyway, they look/run worse than XIII as a result.

It still is pretty unplayable in many situations like the Extreme Mode Garuda fight. I would advise all PS3 users to either get the PS4 version or PC version if they are serious about the game.

I play on PS3. I play a melee DPS. I have my Garuda XM ring.

I don't think this is entirely correct, though. Gran Pulse in FFXIII was massive and ran quite well (at least on the PS3 - I know that this area in particular choked pretty badly on the 360). It's bigger than any of the areas in FFXIII-2, honestly, outside of Academia (which doesn't generally require huge draw distances).

It likely has more to do with shorter development cycles and less time to debug/optimize than with issues inherent to the engine, IMO.

I wonder how much the criticism of Mai Waif--err Lightning's character is due to the english VAs performance. I dont remember the character getting this much criticism in the past 2 games

They wrote her to be a walking emotionless robot. Also, apparently in 500 hundred years no one gets to have character development.

The only annoying thing about Lightning for me right now is the horrible one liners she spouts after every battle. Everything else is alright, but I'm not too far in.

I'm not a FFXIII expert, but I did hate that game with a passion. This is...decidedly more entertaining. The combat isn't as great as it looks in videos and mostly consists of holding down an attack button (not even pushing it) and hitting R1/L1.

I don't have an issue with Lightning's VA, but I haven't had three games to get sick of her either. I actually enjoy the customization, so I'm part of the problem, I suppose.

Now, they totally fucked up by stuffing in a ridiculous time mechanic. Nothing like having a great wide area full of quests to tackle and everything locked behind time walls, forced level ends and a super visible treadmill that makes you fight enemies to gain points to stop time so you can fight more enemies to gain points to stop time.

It's really not utter shit so far!

I loved loved loved the battle system in the demo.

I didn't play either of the previous XIIIs. I don't care about the story. If that battle system continues to give more options and doesn't get too easy (demo was too easy) then I'll probably pick it up once I finish Bravely Default.

I want to get as much of FFGAF in on this avatar bet with Perfo as possible. Whoever posts the most amusing avatar (as judged by me) I will give to Perfo.

Let's begin. Have fun.

Her actress isn't the problem she's great as Palutena in Kid Icarus.

What I expected honestly. The only people who are going to review this game anyway are TRUE Final Fantasy fans and people who got the short end of the stick.

It's actually better if you don't hold down the button. If you time your buttons correctly, you'll get a "Perfect" damage bonus (a yellow aura will appear around Lightning when you time it correctly). Basically, you press the next button as soon as the animation is finished on the last one if I remember correctly. But yeah, holding it down isn't as efficient. There's also "Perfect Guards" - if you time your guard when the hit is landing, you'll usually reduce the damage completely.

Oh, shit. I must have missed that tutorial about the attacks. The guard I knew about. I swear I read all of them though. Appppparreently not

I think at this point all that remains to me and loyal fans to do is to crystalize and become an eternal epitaph like our heroine, to symbolize the loss of Final Fantasy and preserve its memory to the tomorrow yet to be. Perhaps there, in the distant future, the series will wake up again with no haters around and everything will be good again. Yes. It'll be.

Maybe you'll wake up and the games will be good again.

Oh and everybody shouldnt worry about the timer. They could have the game without this stupid timer, because you can stop time anytime you want with GP... and you get GP with defeating enemies. On easy mode many enemies drop 4 GP and Chronostasis (time stop) costs 1GP and stops time for about 3-4 minutes (I don't know exactly how long, could be longer or shorter). I did every main quest and the sub quest for the optional stuff and had 7 days to play around with... or well I skipped them because there was nothing good to do.

I can hardly imagine better games than FFXIII, a game I personally rate with a perfect score. XIII-2 and LR are nice spinoffs, better products than Crystal Bearers, Crisis Core, Revenant Wings and Dirge of Cerberus so I can accept them not being perfect as a main entry. They're still among the best spinoffs the series ever had. If this wasn't 2014 but 1997/1999, XIII-2 and LR would've been welcomed with much more love. Trust me.

Most of these reviews tell you can't finish the game without a game over. Well... it tells alot about the reviews, doesn't it?

Isn't this avatar already taken by someone else? If not this is the current front runner.

I am going to wait until 12AM PST to see if we can get anything funnier or better. If not than this will most likely become Perfo's new avatar.

Nope, nope nope nope nope nope nope and no.

Crisis Core will always be a far better game than ANY game out of the XIII "saga".

Perfo is either gloriously insane or a truly radiant troll

I need sunglasses to stand in your presence

A mix of both, primarily the latter I think.

This is good to hear. There was no doubt in my mind that there would be good ways to get everything out of the game without being frustrated by time restrictions.

I'm looking forward to playing it based on the fun I had with the demo. Playing, mind you. The rest can go away for all I care. The combat is what will keep me in it.

If only you could fit a "fans killed FF, not the games" it would be perfect
