Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

Does the radar indicate whether enemies are above or below? Had a hard time figuring this out.

Also, for new page: Nvidia users who want vsync with less stutter should play windowed.

It's not easy to hold a lock on people with how much movement you have in this game. Which is to say nothing that in a head to head you WILL get outgunned and flattened. It's good for getting the drop on people or for some cool wall running technique while maintaining a lock.

I took it for a whirl and had a lot of fun for the few games I used it, but I do way better with normal weapons. It isn't easy to do well with aside from picking off bots which amounts to little.

I hope not, but I just took it for a whirl in a match, and got like two kills within the first minute against pilots with the method. Of course then the game took to lock and freeze and kick me off the server again, but since that was literally my first time ever using the smart pistol in real combat, I'd say outlook for balance: not particularly great.

That's pretty much consistent though with the myriad of reasons modern competitive FPS turn me off. In the pursuit of making skilless players feel better about themselves, balance is thrown out of wack for challenges, perks and weaponry that often is completely cheap and with relatively few checks (and of course now you have dumb A.I. who is just shooting gallery material and helps them also get quicker titans which do exponentially more damage for them). Of course, the skilled players will still win, but the result is an experience where you feel these lame players can occasionally best you merely because they have some perk that gives them slightly more health than you, or extra mobility, or whatever. Balance becomes so out of control wonky and the sinking feeling that something is off never leaves, it's not like the old days of pure skill vs. pure skill, more about how much time you spend playing to unlock just the right perk set up. It's really undesirable for me, essentially.

My remote hope was that Titanfall would begin to change some of this in order for me to enjoy it, but so far it seems down the same path.

Which is fine, of course, some people enjoy that sort of thing. I'm just happy I got the BETA so I know where I stand on it. I'll play it until the end of the weekend since it's free, as long as I can get a server match working for more than 3 minutes at a time before timing out :/

If respawn peeps are watching this thread I got a strange visual glitch the one time I got the game to load, it reminded me of a multi GPU issue I've seen in other games, flickering lighting for the most part.

Playing on PC , it almost looked like some of the special effects weren't loading right because they'd warp the image something fierce. I haven't tried disabling crossfire yet. Perhaps I'll try again tomorrow. I'll attempt to disable the antialiasing mentioned above to see if that corrects the issue I'm seeing.

This is fucking obscene. I have everything on the lowest settings and I'm still getting terrible graphical issues. I don't have an amazing PC, but I can run most games fine, so this souped up source engine shouldn't be fucking me up this much.

Ok here is my impression.

As someone who doesn't play FPS shooters on line anymore. I got tired of the complicated loadouts, the super complicated XP systems..

I'm digging this. A LOT.
This game feels like an action game with shooter elements. The loadouts are simple. The controls are rock solid. I could not see playing this with a mouse and keyboard.

I at one point was surrounded by 4 Titans. ejected switched to shotgun. landed on one. destroyed it. jumped off and switched to anti-titan gun. killed 2 more before being killed.

This game is the most fun I have had in an ONLINE FPS in a long time. The amount of players is perfect. Any more and it would be too much. I like the droids/bots as help to control points. So far.. I'm super impressed. The sweet action prince of persia style controls make the terrain SUPER fun to climb and explore.

This is going to be a huge hit. I seriously can;t wait to play this with a group of friends. Heck even the invite system worked out ok.

Good job MS. and Respawn

lol, its a fun game, but its nothing revolutionary.

Yeah. It's like Lost Planet never happened. Piloting Hardballers was way more fun then the Titans. But it's not bad. Just it still basically feels like you're just a slower human when you're in a Titan.

Best game yet! 2nd place with 4 titan kills. One dude nailed me and I hopped out of my titan, landed right on top of his, destroyed his titan then knifed him as he landed. Muwahaha.

It is fun, more fun than I thought it was going to be. I think you are just eating the beta, hype, new factor though. I have a bad feeling it is going to get old pretty quick.

I wonder what other unlocks are there...I can see the Titans getting as bad as spamming killstreaks in COD. Overall I like the parkour element.

Game seems fun.

Is anyone else getting bad stuttering? It'll be like constant 60 then sometimes when I look around it stutters horribly, really sucks. I have a 4gb gtx770.

this game will pretty much mark the return of faster/more close quarters FPS games for me.
after quitting COD back in mid MW2 era and playing nothing but battlefield since, i cant wait to get back on the wagon, i missed it.

Yeah, lot's of stuttering. Might be a server (lag) problem?

I was getting very good FPS on tutorial and then once I entered a match stutters everywhere...

Yep. I actually enjoy the game much more when I'm not in a titan.
This is honestly the common statement I hear from people.

Said it eariler, going forward they are probably going to have to choose which mechanic is more important in their eyes. Especially in maps. Traversal or Mechs. I mean, they can have it both ways but honestly I hope the parkour elements are worked on more.

I was getting it in the tutorial too, even the super enclosed space it seemed to stutter a lot when I looked towards the orange stuff. Plus outside during the titan battles.

Finally managed to try Hardpoint and Last Titan Standing. Those playlists were completely empty last night but they seem somewhat populated now.

Joined hardpoint in progress with my team down 150 points, ended up going on a shotgun rampage while my Titan stood guard at a point and turned it around. I think this was the match I FINALLY unlocked extended mag in...I've said it before but some of these challenges are really silly. I don't want to be forced to do something counterproductive just to level a weapon. The shotgun one in question was just 'kill 25 spectres' but it's rare I have time to go hunt those down late game.

The crazy thing is I got like 21k experience for one round of hardpoint. I don't usually get anywhere near that in attrition.

Last titan standing was just a complete stomp. We won a couple rounds then the other team just left. Wasn't too interested in repeating that so I only did one set. Of note is that if you use a burn card, it'll last through all 4 rounds assuming you never die.

Stuff like rodeo-ing a titan to death, jumping off while calling my own titan, and having my titan squash both the doomed autotitan and the escaping pilot makes me want to buy this day 1. But that release date is just so unfortunate.

hm, just got a "burn card." a one life/match boost, like faster speed and such.

I suspect this is where they plan to make money

You can't buy them. They seem adamant about this, so it'll really bite them in the ass if they change their minds.

Also, if you kill a lot of bots in matches (and don't die often), you will get more burn cards than you can ever use. I have to keep throwing them out.

I haven't played it yet so this is just total speculation on my part about something that I haven't tried - anyway, the way it looks like to me is that the pilots are probably going to be the main play method whereas titans should be the one way you can at least destroy stuff without having to worry about dying as a pilot. I see the titan as a second life for a pilot because if the titan goes down, the pilot simply ejects and moves on.

I feel like a lot of the parkour stuff doesn't really come into play a lot. Sure, I can double jump into a second story but you can really strong a ton of wall runs together to traverse the entire map or anything. Either that or I just suck at it.

Though the map that has more wide open spaces doesn't really lend itself to the parkour aspects of the game at all.

Yep, with insane textures anyway.

That's why people with strong hardware but have 2gb or less VRAM are getting random fps drop offs.

For insane textures it's 3gb or bust.

I've got a 2gb 770 and it works fine, but I can't use Shadowplay, because then it becomes unplayable. I think that's because of the vram usage.

After playing several rounds, I can safely say that the game is definitely fun...

...I'm just not sure that it's $60 worth of fun!

Seems to me actually the goal of the matches is to maintain as many titans on the field as you can get at once with your team. If you farm the lame A.I., you get your titans quicker, and you can have the pilots and A.I. mechs for your teammates running about. If you time it right you can probably have a veritable walking tank set up that just eviscerates everything. A good team could probably just shut down competition if they're synchronized, it's beyond simple how they set this up.

Lol just singlehandedly wiped the opposition and prevented their escape. They were focused on a Titan at the escape point and I managed to get 3 melees in a row and then 2 other kills. So good.gif

Uh... so yeah, after 3 hours or so of play, this game fucking rocks (XB1). With the new scaler the current resolution actually look OK, so if they can get this up to 900p it should look pretty decent. Once I unlocked the enhanced jetpack, OMG, so much fun now. I love the different anti-titan weapons too. With custom loadouts, this game really gives you a lot of options.

Took some screens while playing tonight. That was the best of the bunch - that guy blew up REAL good. Had to drop to 720p to get screens, because I'm too lazy to dig out the Hauppauge so I just ran the HDMI to the Intensity Pro

Game is loads of fun - but the gametypes are all geared toward short bursts of chaotic play, and doesn't seem to lend itself to long sessions behind the keyboard. Feels less like an FPS and more like Warhawk but feels more like a really fun timewaster I would play for 30 mins a pop a couple times a week. I'll probably still buy it, but not sure if its worth it.

Hardpoint is very annoying on Fracture with a bad team. Need some more people that have the Titanfall beta on my friends list add me. Like playing the variety pack so far my favorite mode is Last Titan Standing.

Just played two hours on the PC. Game is real real good. Rodeo'ing a Titan is a blast! Specially when you've just eject from yours and can unleash revenge on those below. Got me pumped. Will buy for the Xbone.

Just wished the graphics were better. Oh well.

Ya, was about to post something along these lines. I am really glad I got into the Beta because it will probably end up stopping me from buying at full price. It sounds weird to say but I get a similar vibe from this as I did from Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. I absolutely LOVED that game for about 40 hours and have hardly touched it since.

I will probably consider this at full price once I see what the retail maps and DLC down the line is like.

i played 4 rounds.

it's fun but it's not blowing me away. it plays exactly like COD down to all the conveniently placed shipping containers. the titans add a weird dynamic, taking potshots on them with rockets is satisfying AF.

at one point i meleed another titan and it ripped the pilot out, and then i tossed his ass off the map. there's definitely some nice animations going on with the titans.

There's an arrow that points up or down but it seems kinda hard to see.
