[Digital Foundry] Hands-On With Steam Machine: Valve's Beautiful PC/Console - Specs, Impressions And More

they basically say in the video it'll be worse than base ps5. and thats main platform for every dev.
they actually target and optimize for it.

on pc every other release is by design an unoptimized mess of a port, relying on brute force, which makes alex throw tantrums with 5090 and ryzen9.
imagine this thing trying to run those games.

will also be fun watching same people crying about ps5pro price, justifying $700+ for this anemic pos in 2026, when ps6 running circles around it for a cheaper price will be just around the corner.

yeah, unless this is sub $400, its pure scam job.

Windows has more than 30 years of technical debt, there is absolutely no way they can make a generational leap without leaving the older hardware and dependencies behind. It's just not going to happen. A small tweak here and there, but nothing major.

Suprisingly enough I see PS5 Digital for 437€ on Amazon, I was shocked . As for Series S - nobody buys that even when it can probably go 249€ on sale so...

Then it will introduce all the complexities of building your own machine, which people buying this do not want, that's exactly why they are buying a pre-made PC.

True that. I'd be one of those because while I did have some great years of PC gaming I also had plenty of headaches because of said complexities. I am quite interested in the next Xbox and really hope it turns out well.

Maybe MS got wind this was happening and thought, what brings us the most money. We need to just give up on consoles and pivot to try and stop this impacting Windows too much. I think the majority of gamers would move to a valve system and move away from Windows if they could and saw a performance uplift.

They have nothing to fear. All the talk of Linux being more performant is just a bunch of bullshit:

You were the one imagining I put the threshold on Nintendo or Sony numbers. I put it more closely to other Valve options.

Yes but 94% or the Steam users have Windows and I want this to succeed so I can get rid of it in the desktop space quicker. And I say quicker because it's going to happen no matter what since Valve is working on it. But a better machine would have accelerated this sooooo much.
Windows will always be a part of 90% of gaming PCs. It's absolutely ridiculous to expect anything other government intervention to break that up.

FWIW, most of the games that blow up on PC aren't AAAA console targeted games. They are games that have a very wide range of graphic optimizations and gameplay styles you don't really get on console.

I don't think Valve is too worried about this thing not running Assassins Creed Shadows or whatever at PS5 levels.

Pretty much, it's a PC. What do you think happens if I buy the least popular mobo or GPU, even if the company that made it goes under (lol Valve won't over SM/SD), they will stop working even if they're still using the same intel and nvidia and whatever chips and drivers and I'll be out of luck? The only reason to regret anything PC is if the parts blow up or the buyer's own mistake, like not checking specs/performance imagining it will outdo a Ryzen X3D + 5090 (as in playing every new AAA game for x years, it will work for many years for software for its own spec level regardless) for peanuts.

But yeah obviously it can be a failure on Valve's expectations, but we don't know what those are (and if they even include sale numbers or just promoting more mini PC options in the PC market like the Steam Deck appears to have promoted more portable PC options to be around), and your imaginary PS5 Digital or Steam Deck (like what if it had sold even less, would you still present that as the threshold or skip it, would you have called it DOA or what threshold make it escape that fate for you, even if its users enjoy it?) or any threshold you pull out of thin fart air have 0 bearing.
Veeeeeeeery long way to say that no matter what it sells it's not DOA. I'd have bought one with not even a 9070, a 9060 and 12GB of VRAM and they had me no matter the price. And I guess many others that don't want a downgrade from a PS5.

People have proved once and again that if presented with a more streamlined product they'll choose that. Enterprise world is lost. We're chained to Windows to the end of the times. But average Joe that just wants to play its Steam library? What need for windows they have when they have (in 2035) a plethora of machines that run equal or better, are already prebuilt and have not the hassle of Windows? I guess we'll see in a few years if Valve manages to put drivers up to date.

Well then Valve needs to get out of their bubble and put this product on store shelves so the average Joe has the ability to just stroll in and buy one. I just don't see a world where windows OS doesn't dominate 90+% of all pc gaming hardware.

Valve ain't gonna pull it off before they go public and when that happens it's a dead dream.

The specs make it closer to a series s and than a ps5 taking into consideriation vram and cu's so the price is going to be really important.

A PS5 digital is 399 a series s is 299.

The GPU has basically the same performance as the PS5's GPU, maybe even a little better. The CPU is considerably more powerful.
