Edit: On a different note, did they manage to get flash or is red just going to wander around even more aimlessly inside the rock tunnel?

In gen 1 you can see the basic layout of the cave even without Flash so it isn't as bad as it COULD be.

You just can't see trainers, items, or ladders.

We're going to get another start throttle after the tree is down. Other than that, I don't expect much intervention.

They definitely can. It's surely going to take a while, though. The true challenge will be when they get to Silph Co. or the Safari Zone.
