The Order: 1886 new gifs and info

It's been awhile since I've seen a game inspire so many drive by snark posts and chants of "been there, done that" here on GAF, probably since Ryse. It really makes me root for RaD to knock this outta the park, and serve up some crow to all the cynical killjoys out there.

Just like Titanfall got trolled, so does The Order. Both are considered top games for their respective platforms. Trolling and negativity just comes with the territory.

Nice! Source?
  • Familiar gadgets are featured in the game; Galahad is shown speaking into a "bulky but functional" communicator
  • Combat follows the third-person shooter formula
  • Galahad moves from cover to cover, firing shots from his semi-automatic pistol
  • Galahad pistol whips an enemy, showing off a simple close-quarters melee attack
  • When a surprise enemy attacks, a more complicated melee system described as a "unique variation on the familiar quick-time event" is shown
  • Galahad's experience allows him to predict how different actions play out, so players can move the camera to different objects and interaction points to dictate how the character engages his enemy

That's true, but these games are almost polar opposites of each other which makes it even more interesting. Titanfall earned so much hype from showing off its gameplay loop and from the press actually playing it - The Order is getting hype from nailing its graphics and setting and atmosphere, with almost no gameplay shown. Not to mention one being multiplayer only with the other being single player only.

But even if both of these games were multiplatform titles I think we'd see a lot of the same issues come up: "It's just COD with mechs", "where's the gameplay?", "Is it all QTEs?" etc.

Define what a QTE is for me?

Because this looks like something new ive never seen before.
Walking Dead did similar things, like letting you choose if you want to throw a brick at a zombie or try it with a hammer.

But it should be interesting to see if they can make that whole thing more context sensitive than Walking Dead or Heavy Rain.

Man I was looking through Vanquish to see examples of QTE in games I enjoyed, and I totally forgot how awesome the game was. If only more TPS took queues from it than generic TPS number 5.

Try to branch out a little do something visibly and radically different that seems fun.

Lets ignore how incredible the clothes physics look, how real the sky in the background looks, how the game shows a lot of atmosphere with the wind and its effects on the smoke coming from the chimneys and how the textures looks amazing and life like ( like you can tell it was raining a few hours earlier, looks wet).

Lets focus on the eyes, sure yes ( but yes, they do look odd, just think we shouldn't let that distract us from how good the game looks in this shot otherwise)

I do think the eyes sort of pop out at you and look kinda crappy but yeah it's not enough to detract from how great everything else looks.

The better something looks the more will bad looking details stand out.

But I really doubt that the eyes will look like that in the final version anyway.

We have graphics that look like CGI, in what is quite possible the best looking game ever made.. and people are bitching about fucking .. clipping .. and eyes. stfu :|

I wouldn't be shocked if this isn't gameplay being showcased but just a cutscene.

But then again gifs always hide a lot of detail.

I'm with ya...it's not like they aren't aware of how to make good gameplay, some say there gow games are among the best in series

Game looks absolutely amazing. The capes are the best part of the gifs. Such a natural flow.

As others have pointed out already though, wtf is going on with the eyes? Its easily the worst looking thing in the game.

Looks like it wasn't animated in that particular scene. Doll's eyes in that instance.

SOOOO people are complaining about psycho eyes and floating models when the game is all about 7-9 months out of retail. Well color me fucking surprised, most of you are morons

Uhm, I am sure the sensible people in here are only talking about that because its really apparent in such a visually stunning game. I don't think people are saying this is definitive or is not going to be fixed by the time the game come out.

I'm a human who knows what a human should look like, obviously the eyes will pop out at me in that scene. Uncanny valley and all that. The more realistic the look they go for, the littlest of changes from normality will stick out like a sore thumb.

You'll do very well here.

So what do people want us to talk about? We can't say anything about graphics because it's so far off, we can't talk about gameplay because we've seen only 5 seconds of gameplay. And we've already talked about guns and possible destruction. What should we talk about then?

Da fuq? They aren't even touching the roof with their feet, preorder canceled.

Somehow I see that the game will be a major flop for Sony and the studio will be closed soon after the release. Yeah, looks pretty. So what? How many times have we seen games that have nothing behind them but graphics? When a developer only talks about visuals, there's a huge red flag right there. They probably spent a shit ton of money covering shitty story and shallow gameplay with good visuals, which will only bite them in the ass. Not the first, not the last. The game doesn't have an appeal to sell millions, really, your average dudebro won't buy a game about 1886's London with magic and stuff.

But I hope I'm wrong.

Well GAF knows how to kill hype. Hate even coming into a 1886 thread.

You guys acting like an early video is any indicator to the overall finished look of a game still at least 7 months away. Really stupid to break down 10 secs of gameplay as if you can predict the future.

How long before release did we see titanfall footage? Because that's how you show a gameplay game.

You just defended noobasuar, did you not?
So you're distancing yourself from noobasuar's comments now?
What is this bizarre obsession? Sounds like an ad hominem. I don't know who this person is, but it's true they painted a target on themselves by releasing "PURE GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE" that contained about 10 seconds of actual gameplay (which was very underwhelming by itself). If they don't want people to criticize that and want people to fairly assess a preview of the gameplay, then they might want to release better footage next time.

to me this sounds exactly like what people said with tlou crossed with assasins creed.

I for am am totally okay with a game dev taking a known commodity and upping the ante. I am okay with a super good looking update of tlou with a assasin's creed vibe. I understand the story elements of tlou might be lost but they'll be adding some extra mechanics and their own slight changes etc. uc2 took uc1 and tweaked the fuck out of it on all aspects = good game. Doesnt have to revolutionalize the genre. Dont think that was rad's focus anyway. They are transitioning from psp to console aaa dev and for a studio like tha tto take a new ip add some extra mechanics and a shit ton of eye candy = good start imo. See this as a solid 90+ game. Doesnt have to be a wtfbbqexplosioninmyhead hl2 physics with tlou story and cs/dota addictiveness 95+ game.

because it was said in the faq "it's a cover shooter" lol.

I have had no clue what the gameplay is of the game till now. From "mildly anticipated" to probably "won't buy".

Why can't they just release some gameplay trailer. wtf. The 3 minute thing didn't offer much in terms of actual gameplay and the variance of it.

Y do u have to decide now whether to buy it when its not even out? Y do they need to sell it to u at least 6 months b4 it hits stores? If they showed u everything now, what would they show closer to release?

@NaughtyGods thank you! :) We do some unique things with physics: a very fast converging non-stretchable model, and...

@NaughtyGods ...we model volumetric resistance in medium - that's why the cloth "catches air" correctly as opposed to looking like springs.

I can understand the second part but what's "a very fast converging non-stretchable model"?

Is it to prevent the texture on the cloth stretching awkwardly?

Not many games run at a locked 30 fps. I'm expecting the game to run at that most of the time and dip when things get hectic, like most other games.
Don't say that. We've already had plenty of end-of-gen games dipping into the teens - lets not get the ball rolling that same way into current gen. Thief has those kinds of dips, but it seems like an unoptimized POS. No need to make excuses for a game that's still a long way off.

No, because that's impossible. If it wasn't a QTE, it'd be a cutscene, or every move in the game is contextualized like Assassin's Creed or the Arkham games.

Nothing is impossible - but maybe the contextual route is the best one, provided that there is a solid logic at work and the player isn't just aping arbitrary on-screen prompts.

The shit talking in this thread about how unimpressive the game looks is ridiculous.
Who is out saying this game doesn't look great?

The visuals are truly jaw dropping. I think Adam Sessler called this a playable oil painting and I think that is a very apt description of the game. I think the E3 stage demo is going to be mind blowing. Another thing that's really interesting to me about the game is that you appear to be (at least so far) one of the bad guys on the wrong side of a conflict. They've made it very clear that you're going to be fighting for the aristocracy against an uprising of poor people. That's a very interesting starting point.

Good point and i agree. I honestly feel bad for most of these people, literally only focusing and caring about the flaws of shit. Its sad, i dont know how they even live really. Must be super depressing.

Good thing they haven't :) There's a lot of info about the gameplay out there.
