Titanfall Review Thread

A bit bummed that the framerate/tearing wasn't fixed.


I will, however, as they say, deal with it!

Only a few hours to go. It's finally here!
 
No server will save you from the screen tearing that I've seen.

Definitely a deal breaker, IMO.

Hopefully they patch it immediately

Can you? It wasn't even a year ago that EA turned off content, mechanics and functionality as a result of server issues on a marquee title.

Game will review well of course. There is too much hype surrounding it.

I still predict that the game will wear thin quickly and hind sight will treat this game the same as GTA4.

It is fun for about a few hours, then gets a tad tedious. Of course, I've never professed to be a big MP player, so maybe the game is just not for me.

I played the beta, I loved it. I would give it a solid 9.

You know network issues can be fixed right? A lot easier than a game. So will these sites do a re-review in another week if the servers have an issue this week? The game will be the same no matter what happens to the network.

Gotcha. Was just a little unclear. I'm also disappointed. I'm hoping that future patches get it moving more smoothly, particularly while in a Titan.
 
I'm incredibly disappointed by the things pointed out in IGN's "review in progress"

No private matches for playing with friends? No way to vote on the next map? No renaming loadouts?

These are basic things in a multiplayer game now Respawn...what are you thinking?

They can review the multiplayer, because they played with other people at a review event. Its that simple. It's not like they're guessing at how multiplayer works.

I think it's torn just because of it's position:

  • FPS
  • Affiliated to COD
  • EA published game
  • Microsoft console exclusive and 'face' of the Xbox One (and everything tied to that system)

There is also the hyperbolic language attached to the PR and coverage of the game.

Anyone who has issues with any of these factors is going to immediately oppose this game in some shape or form.

I guess to the game's credit, nearly everyone that's played it from my observation has enjoyed it, including myself. Sure, I think we've all had our issues with it, but it's sort of crazy how well it all worked out together when you look at all the pieces separately.

I suspect some of the review sites may end up scoring it lower if there are major server issues, matchmaking problems etc.

Frankly, after Diablo 3 and SimCity any online only type game like this can surely only be scored based on it's ability and performance in a production environment and not based on the likely highly optimised network environment that the press were likely playing on. In a game like this where latency, lobby and chat is going to play a major factor, how they can rate a game before the userbase is actively hitting it is beyond me.

It's not to say that it won't actually be a smooth launch, but it's extremely premature to score it already and fair play to those review sites that are holding off until they've had a chance to test it in a real world environment. I suspect those will be the reviews worth reading into the most.
 
Not surprised the metascore's a bit below 90 so far.

I think the PC version's metascore will be lower - mid 80s or so. Not because that version's worse, but because certain reviewers who are accustomed to playing FPSes on PC will be less forgiving on this game.

Sorry about that. Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Then again, I'm seeing that people reported it in the beta as well

I guess they could, instead of wishing for the death of a genre of gaming. That was my point anyway. The poster I was responding to can go and play story focused games instead of asking for destruction of something that others like. It's not like Sony isn't developing them or anything.

You don't think the people that write the reviews see the branding all over their site and understand who is funding their paycheck?

I have a very low opinion of games writers but man, you must really think they are dim.
 
Did these reviewers have access to the upcoming patch? Seems odd to put out the review for a game when things like private lobbies and such will be patched in at launch, if I'm not mistaken.

Then again, I always have issues with reviewing mp games/modes before launch given all the issues that manifest out in the wild.

This is pretty common with media journalism in general. I brought it up when comparing the modern state of film journalism and game journalism. It's not rare for me to see comparably site swallowing advertisements for film X on places like /Film when reading a review for that same film.

Campaign was OK, multiplayer is mediocre and most reviews reflect that. Personally one more reason I like to see multiplayer only games ditching the campaigns.

And single player games adopt a episodic model. A no compromises focus approach is a good thing.
