Lightning voted best character in Dengeki's otaku-driven poll

Cute girls.

I'm not sure if I have the best perspective on this since I haven't played FFXIII-2 or Lightning Returns
then again, maybe I haven't and I wont because I did play XIII and found it pretty mediocre
but this sounds really sad. I'm guessing she -has- to have a few buch of hardcore followers after all, but who knows how many you need to win a contest like this? A hundred? A thousand?

When did Final Fantasy start being dominated by otaku? Genuine question. The change in the franchise fanbase over the years sure is something.

I'd guess the gap between Lightning and Miku was close since there were a few ties in the voting.

When the writing started catering to that audience?

FF X.(I love FF X and XIII trilogy and Im no loli otaku type of guy, I hate "sexy" pointless JRPGs with a passion).
FF X-2 is the worst joke in final fantasy history.. much worse than anything the XIII saga ever pulled off.

FF 15 to be rewritten and staring lightning

Oh god...I can already picture it.
The last crystal in the world is actually Lightning in a crystallization stage like the end of FF13.
Or remember the lore about the moon and the goddess in the trailer, and how there is a lady sleeping on the FF logo?
Probably Lightning hahahah...haha..hah...
/cry...because this is SE after all.

People like Lightning = fanbase becoming Otaku? Jeez, I hope you have something to back this up other than 'I dislike this character and I am not Otaku so people that like her must be Otaku because I am not'.

Frankly, I don't get where the hate comes from. And it seems weird considering when FFXIII-2 came out, people were complaining that instead of playing as Lightning they were playing as Serah. Then Lightning Returns came and suddenly people hate on her. I guess I just don't understand the 180 turn. Is it because FFXIII is overstaying its welcome? That maybe true but either way, we'll still be getting a FFXIII sequel since SE can't make a new game quickly. And of all the FFXIII characters, I'd rather play as Lightning than anyone else.

It's more like, Hey I played 10 minutes of FF XIII and saw a bunch of bandwagon internet jokes. Now I know everything about the character and I have a PHD in otaku culture.

So have interesting tidbits... Her competition...

http://2chyflabcom.blog.jp/archives/1000644434.html

2nd place was Hatsune Miku

3rd place was Monokuma

BWAHAHAHAHAH. Oh lord. XD

Further amusement,

4th place was Zero from Drag-on Dragoon 3

5th place was Neptune/Purple Heart

6th place was God Eater's Alisa

7th place was Yuna and Raiden for a tie.

9th was Rorona

and 10th is Rean from Sen no Kiseki

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS

Oh Japan.

Didn't Nomura say there is a link between the fabula nova crystallis theme from XIII in FF XV?

If so Lightning might appear.

They also started sexualizing her more to get more sales from the otaku crowd who only care about sexual appeal than gameplay, despite their being plenty of porn and hentai out there on the internet for free.
I think you're taking this more seriously and generalizing more than you probably should.

It's largely not the same people. There was no 180 turn (although hatred toward the subseries has certainly been exacerbated by its long-running nature).

The audience that actually likes Lightning was annoyed when a game which looked like it had lots of Lightning did not have much Lightning.

Then when a game focused around Lightning comes out, all the more reason for people who don't like Lightning to be all "hey, I don't like Lightning."

Am I dreaming right?

Well.. she's much more enjoyable when playing with her Japanese voice overs.

Maybe we westerns were all thrown off by the sultry 'I don't give a f*ck' English voice cast/direction.
I know that I was incredibly surprised that Lightning's original Japanese voice over had a much wider range of emotional dialog exchange.

I even felt like she actually cared about what the heck was happening and wasn't driving purely by duty and a half backed hope....

When was the last Final Fantasy (or SE in general) character that people referred to as an actual goddess outside of the game? When was the last time a dominant reason for liking a character (at least express on GAF) was explicitly "I want to fuck them"? Don't push your insecurities on me. If you're not an otaku, don't explain to me why you aren't, i never called you one. But to deny that the face of the current FF fanbase isn't pandering to otaku, is crazy.

OH GOD. Does this mean more games with the boring character that no one likes?
Not necessarily.

FFXIII was rushed and its sequels existed at all because Square Enix catastrophically misjudged their seventh-gen development plans, and Toriyama's team had to shove some lower-budget stuff out while the rest of the people put out fires.
There's a fair chance they'll move on now.

It's not that I think. That cat costume + pose + "redesign" (check the paragraph regarding the bust size and costumes) seems to imply that they are catering to the fanbase you are mentioning.

Well, Maaya Sakamoto is a good voice actor so that shouldn't be a surprise.
