Your pure black squares are lighter than the dark area you pasted them onto. How can they be pure black? I'm confused.
Well, thats exactly the point he is trying to make, what should be pure black isn't!

The screenshots on the Steam store page seem to be pre-downgrade to me, and if the Bandai PR rep is to be believed, these were taken directly from the PC version.
The lighting does not look flat and these dark areas look washed out in the console release. The first screenshot even shows the same geometry/textures as the console version.
Based on what everyone is saying, I'm not crazy to think the game felt laggy. The controls aren't tight like in the previous two.
Would all of this happened if Miyazaki was involved?
If the PC version looks the same as pre release footage and they had released both versions on the same day, they would have avoided this huge mess.
Even if they only delayed PC version to work on it a bit longer (def cash grab IMHO) they still should have waited for a simultaneous release.
Instead of "OMG they lied!" It would be "this game looks amazing, console port is garbage tho."
I don't care if it is or isn't the case that the game has a messed up color space. I just don't think your analysis is absolute, and there are other possibilities no matter how odd or unexpected. You assume the colors you tested are meant to be pure black. You assume pure black is not contained in the image. You assume there needs to be color consistency in the cutscene's black bars, the title screen and the rest of the game. Others have claimed the image does indeed contain pure black and can handle full color space.Damn, people really want to believe this isn't true.
This is only true if, the black bars during cinematic & the black behind the title screen were also not-quite-black colors were programmed deliberately.
Not really because they advertised the PS3/360 version with the new lightning system. It would make PC gamers happy because they would wave their awesomeness in everyone face. But as ive said before making sure the PC version has the new lightning system would just shit in the face of the majority of the fanbase so why do they deserve that?
(One of the biggest problems for those of us playing the PS3 disc version are the excruciatingly long loading times.)
- Objects and enemies materializing out of thin air.
- Flickering shadows and light sources.
- Out of sync sound effects.
- Mob animations either freezing entirely or moving at lower FPS (like 5 FPS low).
- Input lag both in the menus' and HUD screens.
- Input lag during gameplay (character not reacting at all).
- Player being "smelted into the wall" during a Boss fight.
- Painful loading times (18 seconds on average for me: quickest was 14s. longest took 42s.)
- Very inconsistent framerate (going from the higher 10s up to 60fps when nothing is happening on screen)
From Software isn't going to respond, Bamco is the one that handles all the PR now. From Soft are the devs of the game and that's it. Blame Bamco for the false advertisement. From's been known to bullshot screens but never to the extent of gameplay footage and not to the degree seen in DSII.
Namco Bandai will make an announcment about Darrk Souls 2′s ‘Downgrade-ation’ next week
NeoGAF tried to pressure Namco’s PR and according to ‘jschreier’, Namco PR is working with Japan in hopes of saying something next week.
“In case anyone’s curious, Namco PR told me today that they’re working with Japan in hopes of saying something next week. It’ll be on Kotaku whenever I get it.”

That looks completely different. No shadows anywhere but when you use the torch and barely any AO.I'm telling ya, the game looks like that if you fix the color range on your console & TV.
The difference is contrast & black levels, the PC shots aren't washed out due to having the incorrect black levels.

Game looks fantastic to me, took some smart tv screen captures that do not do the game justice at all.... (wish I could find a quality increase option)
MUCH better looking than DS1 tbh, blacks look fine with good lighting.

"Compromises had to be made in order to ensure the optimal Dark Souls experience that players have come to expect."Direct Source: http://www.dsogaming.com/news/namco-bandai-will-make-an-announcement-about-dark-souls-2s-downgrade-ation-next-week/
One week is enough time for both of them to build a mutual strategy on how to handle the issue and reverse the backlash which I am assuming will jeopardize the sales or has already done that, hence the fast response.
If it was not an issue and we were all being paranoid, we would have been completely ignored or shutdown. In that respect, Dark Souls 2 downgrade is a fact so there are no more doubts.
"Compromises had to be made in order to ensure the optimal Dark Souls experience that players have come to expect."
I'll be so angry at the inevitable self-congratulatory PR nonsense they're going to spout.
That would be out of the way of anything... PS3 games aren't gonna have high res textures in every little corner. Now pan to the right and look at the horrid 2D background texture showing some very pixelated, flat rock columns.
It seems likely that PS4 and XBone versions are incoming but Namco didn't want the far larger PS3/360 install bases to go to waste. They had to announce a PC version right off the bat because we'd flip our shit if we were ignored after the DS1 debacle. The real question is whether or not the PC build is using the same assets as the PS4/XBone.
There is absolutely nothing to suggest that PS4/X1 ports are in the works.
There is absolutely nothing to suggest that PS4/X1 ports are in the works. Something can't seem likely when you have no data to extrapolate from.
The fact that you're saying this is worse than Colonial Marines shows how clueless you are regarding this.
Now pan to the right and look at the horrid 2D background texture showing some very pixelated, flat rock columns.
Except for all that talk about how the new technology was created with next-gen (current-gen?) in mind. Why even bother announcing that before launch if they're not seriously considering it? Obviously, they haven't confirmed anything, but I'm sure From/Namco don't want to leave money on the table.
I don't think that's fair. DS1 had quite a few atrocious textures, even with the texture mod from nexus.
I don't think that's fair. DS2 is the 'graphically enhanced' sequel to DS1.

Just so I am clear, this downgrade affected the 360 version as well as PS3, correct?
Quote for answers?

I dont think their too bad. quite nice actually on my TV, the screenshots as iv said before are compressed as hell... and do not do it justice, losing a fair bit of detail but can atleast can see its not washed out/has decent depth to the blacks.
Positive proof that the game is running the incorrect color range.
Namco sabotaged FromSoftware.
Again:Here's a crazy thought:
What if From Software was developing the game under the incorrect settings on their TVs? Crazy, I know, but just maybe that's what happened.

I know they are probably just talking about the engine, but I honestly wouldnt be suprised with a next gen version in 2015.

What screen capture did you use? Can you point me to it?
My TV was calibrated using a Rite Eye-One Display 2 & HCFR Colormeter.
My gamma track is 2.23. Brightness is calibrated at 120cd/m2. Color is set to 6500k.
The correct HDMI color range normally for every game & movie would be these two combinations:
Xbox 360, Standrad Reference Level.
PS3: RGB Limited.
Your TV: HDMI Full.
or
Xbox 360: Expanded Reference Level.
PS3: RGB Full.
Your TV:HDMI Limited.
What? It's the other way around.
Standard / Limited
TV: low black
Expanded / RGB full
Tv: high / full black
I asked him the same thing, its just the way his manufacturer configures his tv![]()
For the defenders who keep coming back saying "it's not a big deal, the game is still fun, It's not like From are known for graphics, etc." watch this video:

Replace Watch_Dogs and Ubisoft with Dark Souls II and From Software/Namco Bandai. Same deal.
This is why people in this thread are frustrated and angry. Deception that carries all the way to a game's launch and beyond sucks, especially when it costs $60 .
My game looks almost identical to the original reveal as far as that area goes and looks nothing like the other versions.I'm telling ya, the game looks like that if you fix the color range on your console & TV.

You never had out of synch sound and crazy input lag (or not reacting at all)? I find that hard to believe. I have this all the time. Especially the input lag drives me crazy at times.
Anyone else really upset on the hit feedback you get? Sometimes I roll out of the way but the enemies still hit me although nothing aside the decreasing health bar suggest so - meaning, my character doesn't appear to be hit (no animation), there is no "hit" sound and there is no controller vibration indicating me receiving a hit. Find that to be very confusing at times.
FROM really dropped the balls on this on technically. What a mess...
