DirectX 12 GDC 2014 presentation: Low-Level Access, DX11 GPUs, Holiday 2015

If all this performance stuff pans out on a tangible level, I will upgrade to 8.1. I'm riding with my gxt670 until maxwell cards come out so any boost to efficiency will be worth dealing with Metro UI. (Ugh)

hardware adoption rates weren't the problem for the dx9-10 transition, it was everyone sticking with windows xp since nobody wanted vista

now dx12 will be tied to windows 8.1 and we'll probably see a similar effect, though possibly not as bad

yeah, it's also one of the reasons Valve is pushing OGL. In China the majority still use XP, but have modern hardware running under their machines. So with OGL they can exploit that hw as it's not tied down to certain OS versions.

Microsoft seems to have this weird view I cannot understand that PC Gaming (which is predominately Windows based) is a direct competitor to it's own Xbox platform.

If Microsoft release everything they make on PC as well as Xbox people won't buy an Xbox console because they can get it on PC. MS has no need to put games on Windows, probably almost nobody will decide to buy a Windows machine for their games

And I thought misterxmedias insider said MS has been working years on this and DX12 is not in response to Mantle. Not sure what to think now!

wat?

Why would it?

because the CPU hardware on the xbone is identical to the PS4, so differences between software running on both can be attributed to the development environment (which can be improved over time) and a weaker GPU (which obviously can't)

a new graphics API that reduces CPU overhead is great but it won't replace the lost compute units, ROPs, and memory bandwidth that was cut from the xbone to make room for that awkward cache

If they released their stuff on PC they'd probably get money from me.

Currently they get zero from me as I have no interest in consoles at all and don't plan to purchase one.

I thought that CPU overhead doesn't exist on consoles anyway? Low level access, coding to the metal etc.

So MisterX will change the dGPU/SecretSauce NDA to Christmas 2015...

“dGPU made by nvidia that's why they were showing Forza 5 running on Nvidia hardware. the situation is complicated, MS doesn't want to give too much away for sony to rebound. keep digging all will be revealed in 2015.”
