Frank Quitely has a little bit of an issue with skin of humans looking like orange peels.

However, his panel composition is phenomenal. When he gets his A-game on, he's damn good.

David Aja is one of my favourite comic artists.

His work on Immortal Iron Fist and Hawkeye was brilliant.

I've always liked this one by him though.

EDIT: picture at the top of this page is gorgeous. Very clean, and yet still very active.

^ the color is certainly a lot closer, yes. This picture is also very much along those lines as well:

Also a big fan of Leinil Francis Yu.

Indeed, indeed, indeed. This picture by him is pure beauty. The longer I look, the more I like it.

And oh good, another Wolverine artist. They're great too, but still not perfect.

Why is it so hard to find a perfect picture of wolverine by different artists? There's always something wrong with each one. Like, everything about it might be perfect, but he has a horrible mask on, or maybe everything looks perfect, but he looks oddly short. Always just one or two things. :(

While not interior art, there's a few artists who do the covers for some of my favourite comics who's work is just fantastic and severely underrated.

Take Yuko Shimizu for instance. She's done the cover art for all issues of The Unwritten. She's capable of drawing these surreal scenes that capture something important about every issue.

And John Paul Leon. His work on the covers of DMZ captures the tone of each issue perfectly, with a gritty....kind of graffiti style.

Great names all over this thread!

Wow, sooo jealous haha. Where was that?

Bruno Gazzotti
Yeah, his work is brilliant, I want to try Seuls, his next big thing after the end of SODA.

I have to say that the style of Reno (french artist, currently doing Aquablue) is very intriguing. I know he likes to use 3D to create his art but the final result is fascinating:

I'll be the first one to say that I'm not really into comics as much as I used to, but something I will read is I Kill Giants.

Really fascinating book about the childish perception of fantasy and imagination.
A mate lent me this recently, I'm not really into comics but it was brilliant! And the art looked as if Quentin Blake had taken up manga. Fantastic stuff.

Comicsalon Erlangen 2012 (Germany) - its every 2 years, so the next one is this year and i hope some big french names will show up again. I also got a sketch from another master:

Seuls is great, but i would wait till the series is finished, as its one big story, so better to read when its done or when theres an integrale, so you dont have to wait a year between each tome ;)

Aquablue, eh? Very interesting art style indeed. I really don't care how artists get their work done, though completely hand-drawn usually looks better.

Romantically apocalyptic is great, but not hand drawn.

I feel like although a lot of comics have great set pieces or illustrations, they don't always do a service to comics as medium because it limits actual flow from panel to panel.

A lot of the stuff I see here is like that, unfortunately. Really great detailed pieces and would be great as a singular illustration maybe, but I would hate actually "reading" that, as a lot of the time the composition and layout tries too hard to look good instead of actually being readable.

I think it just comes down to taste, but yeah. This thread is just about the visual art aspect after all.

That said, I love how Blacksad both looks and reads for example.

For me great comics are the one combining a beautiful art and great scenarios, both are as important to successfully tell a story. For example, Alex Alice's pages are not complex to read, your eyes follow naturally each curbs and lines he decided to draw to bring the attention of the reader where it needs to be. I personally find his skills as an illustrator/watercolorist/inker/story teller truly amazing. Same thing for Blacksad. So beautiful art doesn't distract me from the story as long as it's supposed to be here.

Well, here is maybe the perfect example, Masashi Tanaka's Gon, the first comic I ever "read". No text, not even a sound is written in this comic, pure ink. Yet you understand everything and follow the story for hundreds of pages:

Yep, that's one of the french classics. It started in 88 and had something like four different artist drawing it over the years. Reno, the last one is my favourite. And for the art, well as an illustrator myself I love to know the personal secrets of the authors I like, work references for later haha.

Kudos to you!

So are we including manga in this?

Mangas are comics.

Eesh, um, hmm.

See, I guess the issue with manga is it's always very much the same. Certainly it has tons of variants, but it's all one established art style. The purpose of this thread is to introduce me and others to new and excellent examples of comic art (as well as simply showcase and discuss great comic art amongst those of you who are already comic gurus).

So while I won't try to disallow it, I don't know that it really fits the original purpose of this thread. If you feel that you have a manga piece that fits the original purpose of the thread, then feel free.

Basically I don't really want this thread full of manga any more than the other types of art.
