Phil Spencer on Halo 2 Anniversary

Surprised to hear a lot of grief regarding BXR/BXB. It really wasn't even that big of a deal and I lived and breathed on that game. The dummy glitching was horrendous though, as well as the standby nonsense. Getting the flag from underneath the coagulation base was pretty fun though.

There's no way it's not happening at this point.

I just fear they will tinker with the gameplay. Which will only end horribly.

The only things they should change would be updated graphics, 60FPS, and dedicated servers. Leave the rest in it's former glory.

Halo 2 multiplayer was so damn good. Honestly I think Halo CE single player and Halo 2 Multiplayer are the two best things of the Halo series that even Bungie themselves never bettered.

I hope they do dedicated servers or if they ever bring the original trilogy to PC let players host their own (hey a man can dream!)

Four words: Halo Three Double Scarab

Sup default. How's Silent Zero doing? You two were always together

He's doing alright, if not a little bummed out about the Oculus news. What about you duders; evilbadman, zeke, and all? I haven't posted in the PA forums in a while, but I remember seeing the Halo clan thread being somewhat active around 4's release. I'd love to see TBK come back up if this turns out to be true. With pro action replay cheaters being gone, I'd also like to finally get that 50!

One thing I'd like to know is how they're going to go about updating the look of Chief, Arbiter, etc. Which version of the Elites are we going to have in MP? Are they going to look like Reach Elites, H4 Elites, or something new?

Um, you do realize that Halo 3 was the ending right? Halo 3 was originally part three of Halo 2.

Which is probably why they would also release Halo 3 HD along with it.

I think Jeff is referring to the cliffhanger at the end of H2. The story goes that Bungie was being rushed by MS to finish the game and so we ended up with "Sir, finishing this fight".

Why wouldn't it be the same? I see no reason to change them, just the game exact game but in 1080p will look nice.

For people saying BxR/BxB should be removed I doubt you have any idea of how big of a ramification that would be to gameplay.

Its a simple button combo that ANYONE can pull off. It added skill gap and so many "HOLY FUCK" clutch moments that could never be pulled off in others game which in turn lead to its greatness. Was there anything better in gaming than practically being dead and pulling off a clutch BxR and hearing your oppoent scream and have his mic cut off half way???

When you have a game with relative low TTK like halo is is PARAMOUNT that you have a way to deal with enemies up close.

Seriously think about it, what's better for gameplay; being able to dispose your foe up close quickly and skillfully or this crap we have now, run up to your opponent punch him, jump back, try to pull of a headshot after a 5 second struggle. YAWN.

People always seem to forget CE has BLB which was a double melee as well yet no one ever complains about it. Is it a coincidence that the best 2 Halo MPs by far had these "glitches" that improved CQB.
I think not.

Halo 4 pretty much killed TBK right after it's 8th anniversary. The PA Halo thread moves so slow now i think it's still the same thread from before Halo 4's launch.

I haven't played Halo 4 in a year now and most of the other old group stopped playing Halo entirely as well. I talk to badman and a few of the other Bees regularly still, but the group probably plays more Battlefield together than Halo these days.

If H2A were a thing, I wouldn't be surprised to see it come back, although I'd also like to see the ooold ones come back like mourningwood, timi, tinwoodsman, etc along with everyone else

Um, you don't seem to get it. We're not talking Halo 2 HD. Halo 3 and 4 HD yes, but not 2. We're talking Halo 2 Anniversary, as in CE Anniversary.

You don't seriously think CEA is just CE in 1080p do you? That was actually released on XBLA before CEA came out.

And besides, Halo 2 is a butt ugly game.

I know what he is talking about. I prefer it to stay as pure as the original, didn't like how they did CE. Halo 2 looks nice to me,in 1080p it will look even better.

Phil is starting to grow on me. Halo 2 mp was my favorite of them all. So this news makes me pretty excited.
Starting to grow on you? Dude has always been one of the best things about the Xbox team. Glad he's finally becoming a recognizable face of the brand. A real enthusiast, just like Shu.

...is this a serious post? Suggesting _dedicated servers_ are what longtime Halo fans want, and would be the redemption of the franchise?

Halo 2 may have had bugs, glitches, and other problems- but it also had something that the franchise began to lose in Halo 3 and was completely absent by Halo 4- an identity. Out of the near fifty people I used to play Halo 2 with online regularly, not a single _one_ of them gives a shit about dedicated servers- or Halo 5 period.

H2A has some of them talking about getting an Xbone for- as long as the original MP is largely intact. And I'm completely on board with them.
This.

Guess what? You can play it in 1080p. You can play it in 4K even. On PC. Look it up on youtube.

Having it at high resolutions actually just exposes how ugly it looks even more. It's just a poor game visually.

CE by comparison, still looks excellent.

they better not, the MP was near perfect in my eyes. :(

1080p at 60fps must happen I mean come on it was on the OG Xbox.

I know he is. But if you just play Halo 2 and move strait to Halo 3 (which I actually did after completing the Halo 2 legendary playthrough, though I moved back down to Heroic since I'd already beaten 3 on legendary and 2 had worn me out), and it works perfectly.

Halo 3's intro cutscene works perfectly well as just the very next scene after the ending scene of 2, actually.

If you think about it, Halo 3's intro is just about as jarring as the ending of 2. Because the originally were stuck together. I mean, there's no control tutorial or anything like the first 2 games in 3.

You know, I was OK with that. I hope they redo the graphics and give something similar to CEA with 2 engines running at the same time which can be switched on the fly.

I was OK with it too I just want to know where the artists are getting their inspiration this time around. The Covenant designs have always changed with each game and that's resulted in some hits and some misses. If anyone from 343 is reading this thread I have a small request. Please. For the love of all things sacred and holy. Do not base the new Grunt or Jackal designs for this game or any future games on their H4 iterations. They are both utterly disgusting. Thank you.

Yeah, it's too bad about 4. I don't think it's a bad game, but it's not one I want to play.

It's good to hear some of the old guard are still playing together. I haven't heard from the three you listed in, maybe, half a decade or more, but it'd be interesting to see who turns up in a possible re-release. I know some of us are still playing with the arcadians offshoot group. Blade and Silent, at the very least.

Anyway, if you bring TBK back up, shoot me a PM!

You just know the infamous E3 level is going to make it into this game somehow.

How great would that be if that's how they announced the game? Start by showing the original video and then morph it into the updated graphics version. I would have a first time seeing a ghost boarded freakout all over again.

I think not.

People don't complain about Halo CE glitches because relatively few people actually played the game in a context where those glitches were relevant (read: tournaments and XBC). Most didn't even know about them.

Most people that played Halo CE MP, despite maybe playing it for an extensive number of hours; did so relatively casually. If you were just hosting LAN parities in your college dorm or parent's basement for your friends: advantageous exploits like reload glitch and double melee didn't carry much of a premium.

Live and Halo 2 engendered a shift in consciousness by exposing many of these types of players to a new style of competitive multiplayer. They were forced to adapt to a new environment where a premium was placed on winning and the most efficient ways to do this were constantly changing with exploits, updates and time. I believe it's this generation of Halo players - the ones that cut their competitive teeth on Halo 2 (and suffering all the psychological affectations and biases that develop alongside that commitment (just like the CE generation before them)) - that is currently being catered too. This is largely why the strongpoints of CE have become completely irrelevant today.

I think it's a shame, because there's literally no FPS that plays like CE's multiplayer.

It's funny we're seeing this after years of $60 spent every year on a new MP game. You'd think one would last long enough to earn the merit for good.

I remember slipping Halo 2 into an Xbox 360 back when every 360 game coming out was being bought cause of the graphical upgrade.

I don't know if I'd play this again. It's been years since every one I knew had a copy, plus it would only last for a few months. Look at the Halo 1 remake. It was cool, but I didn't keep up with the game after a month. They should of done this years ago.

I was there when Halo tournaments were like ball games on television. Now it's like a push. I guess its the new marketing.

Halo CEA was a great product outside of the multiplayer. Since they hooked it into Halo Reach, it was doomed to mediocrity. If this really is Halo 2 gameplay, it'll live for a while.

You're definitely not alone, although we are quite lonely on GAF. Best Halo Campaign? Best Halo Campaign.

Best Halo Campaign? Nah.

Underrated Halo Campaign? Certainly. It just had so many issues with things like jackal snipers, some absolutely horrible boss battles (though I thought regret was ok), and bad enemy design like the waves of flood in Gravemind.

Plus, fighting flood is no fun in 2. It's fun in CE and 3, but not in 2, unless you have a sword.

Now, as for the best Campaign story? Ehh, I don't know, but I love the hugeness of 2's story. Wish more Halo games would follow that style of story.

Yea i did see it and thought it looked fine, maybe im a weirdo but i like how that game looks.

Maybe not a weirdo, but most people I know don't think it looks all that great. And I'm just a big fan of how CEA looks overall. Minus the glowly forerunner stuff (that ought to have just been cold and dead and ancient like in the original CE), I thought the art style suited the game perfectly.

ghst

thanks for the laugh
I'm curious: are you referring to degeneration from CE, forward - or some other game in the series, forward? I feel like I'm missing context for your posts. What is your stance regarding CE?

i never played any halo super seriously, so from my split-screen-and-friend's-piece-of-shit-third-party-spazpad perspective, the difference between the first two came down to some new maps and dual wielding.

3 felt kinda sanitised, but i don't think the downfall really started in earnest until they started introducing loadouts and undermined the importance of map control.

i'm not trying to make some super on-point observation about the halo series' progression, i just like to think that even if it's not for me, halo's multiplayer is unique and definable enough that it should be preserved for as long as people still want to play it.

competitive video games are in this weird place where they have to evolve with the available technology and continue to iterate in order to stay relevant, but that shouldn't mean sacrificing their core design. games like CS GO and dota 2 have proved this is more than possible and i feel like the only way to do right by halo fans is to pick up where halo 2 left off and show far more respect for both the formula and the competitive community going forward.

Fuck yeah Blade was a Slayer beast too, but he started to play other games during Halo 3's run sooner than everyone else did.

Anyone else find it kind of sad that the only way people are willing to get hyped about Halo is if it's a release of an older game? I mean, I'm excited for Halo 2 coming back but it's like people have lost all hope with the future of Halo and can only look at the past/Still need to play Halo 4.

You just know the infamous E3 level is going to make it into this game somehow.

Most of the elements of that level made it into Halo 2 in other forms.

What's more likely is they'd re-implement Forerunner Ship as the final level of Halo 2, since a) it was almost done before the game shipped, and b) you can add it and have zero effect on the canon

of course, this depends on if Bungie actually retained whatever remants of Forerunner Ship existed and it didn't disappear into the bitbucket when they moved on to Halo 3.

Microsoft does have Frankie, Joe Staten and the Halo Bible along with assumably all assets from Halo 2. I would love to see them clean up the campaign where possible.

Final cutscene with Chief getting explosively decompressed while surfing a piece of metal? Yes please.
