Phil Spencer on Halo 2 Anniversary

What are the 5/6 MP games? Are they drastically different from one another? I thought Titanfall being released would destroy PvZ:GW's population and ability to set up quality matches, but that wasn't the case at all. In fact, I've been finding that a lot of people see them as complimenting each other extremely well.

This is what I'm thinking will happen, at least for me, later this year. Sure the population won't be as huge as it could be if it was the only game releasing during that window, but I don't think we'll have a problem finding games (quality ones at that).

I'm afraid quality games will revolve mostly around private matches, tho.

I'm willing to be more optimistic thanks to you. Not shitting on an yet to be announced game...just burnt by previous Halo hype trains.

Destiny will suck me unless it sucks. which makes a potential tried and true Halo 2 MP formula with good graphics a nice cop-out if needed.

2 v 2.
BRs only.
Lockout.
lmfao preach it brother!

Yup, and the bolded is definitely why I'm still reserving judgment until we start seeing footage. The burns man....... Still haven't fully recovered from some of them hahah

Oh god. So fucking good. Defending the flag and wondering if they're gonna come in from above or through the front...
Banshee + bomb guy riding on top = Halo 2 Assault

What the hell happened to Objective gametypes after CE/Halo 2?! Shit, what happened to the quality of MAPS after CE/Halo 2?! Halo 3 crushed allllll of it! Sluggish game through and through.

I think we know that CEA was more than just an HD upgrade, but I think I've seen a few people that thought they messed with the textures a bit to much. I always liked the aesthetics of forerunner technology, the plain gray metallic look. Then they went back in CEA and turned it all into Tron shit.

That's what I mentioned in the other post. I really thought the new textures and things fit the game perfectly...

Except for the dagblasted forefunner stuff. Cold and ancient and dead. That was how it was supposed to be.

CEA killed the flood levels because of that. They could have at least had the lights off the second time through (when you go back through those corridors) when all the flood was out.

That was my biggest issue with it.

So what was Halo 3 supposed to be?

Something else. I don't think Bungie really knew.

Sucks, because we could have gotten some other completely new cool story with 3.

Yeah to me the Halo 3 maps were garbage. 2-3 decent ones and the rest shit.
Honestly, the gameplay is what killed those maps. For example, throw CE gameplay in Epitaph or Isolation (two of the most hated maps at launch) and you'll have a couple solid 2v2 maps, comparatively at least. Halo 3 though? Those kill times were so damn long and the spread of the weapons was so inconsistent, especially with that terrible netcode in Halo 3.

Halo 2 was designed around 30FPS. Putting it at 60FPS would make it play strangely.

Games being "designed" around a certain framerate is a myth. The only things 60 fps changes, apparent smoothness and input lag, have no effect on the actual game mechanics themselves, besides making it more reliable to execute them.

Play Halo 2 on PC sometime. Feels like the same game, only mysteriously better.

I honestly don't think the H3 netcode was lightyears worse than H2. But Bungie chose to add bullet travel and I don't think people's connections on P2P at the time could handle it. Hitscan would have made the experience pretty much like Halo 2.

Guardian was a great map. I liked it a lot more than lockout, even. Valhalla and Isolation are worth playing.

But other than that, yeah 3's maps weren't near as good as those in 2.

I thought the series always utilized bullet travel hit detection?

Most bullet weapsons in 1/3, and plasma weapons in all games use projectile travel. Most bullet weapons in 2/Reach/5 use hitscan. Anybody feel free to elaborate or correct me where I'm wrong.

They were both terrible to play online at times. Halo 2 also had poor netcode, host advantage was very frustrating as were the modders, although sometimes it would be fun to play against cheaters just for that off-chance that you win lol

Yeah I believe this is correct.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Okay yea an update to my previous post, so as not to blemish my record haha... The halo this year isn't 5

The one thing i want for a halo game is some sort of custom game browser so people who don't have many friends playing can play all those crazy fun custom games. For example: set up a game, give the lobby a name and set it to public. Then people can search through the list and possibly filter games by ping/location.

Halo CEA was a great product outside of the multiplayer. Since they hooked it into Halo Reach, it was doomed to mediocrity. If this really is Halo 2 gameplay, it'll live for a while.

If they ship H2 HD they need to do it right and make it a cross platform MP game. Have shared servers for PC, 360, and XB1. Make it where account status appears on all consoles. H2 would have to be the "go to" game anytime and anywhere for it to bank in my opinion. That and it would need a solid audience.

Turn H2 into solitaire. Every Xbox has a copy.

Zombies and SWAT are the two I remember the most.

Zombies: No shields, entire team is blue or one color, Zombie is Red(or Green) with the sword. One death per round. No radar. Blue team is all on one team, zombie is on his own. Dead players become zombies.
Note: Make the zombie the Elite class.

SWAT: No shields, everyone has a pistol, and one death per round. No radar.

I wonder how they'll deal with the DLC map situation. Will we just get the maps the game originally came with or will we get some of the DLC/Vista exclusive maps(either all of them or just some hand picked)?

I think Halo 2 was a 'had to be there at the time' kind of deal. I played it when I got a 360 and I thought it was pretty unremarkable. The fact that it's MS's flagship title for this year is a joke.

Nah, it's a remarkable game imo. Halo 2 Anniversary would be fantastic.

it's not a joke to me. hands down it's my favorite halo. bungie butchered everything after 2. halo 3 was fun, but not so much halo 2 fun.. then again thats the first xbox live game i played so i may be biased.

How come you thought it was unremarkable?

I don't know what I was supposed to be impressed by. The graphics were ugly as hell (although I hear that the 360 introduced some graphical glitches), the plot was tedious (and that ending, lol), and the gameplay was totally unremarkable (and repetitious).

I didn't really play much of the multiplayer but I was never that into the MP of the Halo games when I did play them (3 and Reach).

Titanfall released this year, MS haven't announced H2 Anniversary officially and we don't know there E3 plans. Jumping the gun a little?

Halo 2 is remarkable, the multiplayer is astounding and still outshines a lot of the dross that passes for multiplayer today.

Anyone that plays console shooters should have major respect for Halo.

The main graphical issue is the ghost images that occasionally somehow get stuck in the graphical pipeline, appearing as translucent layers at some depth. Other than that, the game is basically identical to the original, but with better image quality and less stable framerate.

I always thought the ending was reasonable for a mid-trilogy game, and is actually pretty impressive given the development hell. I mostly just laughed at the "finishing this fight" line.

Of course, considering the expectation that Halo 2 was going to be conclusive, it infuriated a lot of people in 2004.

Yeah all the Halo games are really well done IMO. Even ODST is really well designed and feels good to play. I'm Young Gaf, but CE was still the first one I played, and man was it amazing. probably my #1 FPS campaign of all time above even Bioshock Infinite. So much respect for what bungie did. Destiny will be great!

It's still an ugly game. CE still looks great, but 2 is really ugly.

The netcode in H2 and H3 were both awful in their own way, but they were very different kinds of awful. H2A better have totally revamped netcode (I mean, no latency compensation on long range shots in H2? Seriously Bungie? How the fuck is it possible to overlook that?)

Give it netcode on the level of Killer Instinct and I can die happy.

If it lives up to the nostalgia goggles.
Which it inevitably will not.

There's no way they're just going to release a HD version with a new coat of paint and leave the entire multiplayer game the same as it was a decade ago. Regardless of what Phil says, expecting multiplayer to not be fundamentally different due to age and different dev teams is setting yourself up for major disappointment.
