How are Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 linked? Shared world, plot, characters?

There are vague references to characters and events from Dark Souls, but they are so far in the past that no one actually remembers any of them. The only live on in legends.

Edit:
Well, there are at least a couple more overt references.

I'm thinking of going dark hex, have my INT at 40 already and planning to get my FAI up to 24 (affinity). I may get my INT up to 50, but I'm curious if I should get my STR up to 20 to 2-hand the crypt blacksword, or if I should just go up to a dark large club..

If you're going Hex, you might want to keep your INT and FAI close to each other, as it scales of the smaller one of them.

ok, I will try pilgrims or co-op with sunbros.

they're indeed linked, you should see that by yourself if you read the lore and play the game. if you really want to know just chek the lore thread.

did anyone here get these 2 rings yet? :p
Illusory Ring of a Conqueror - Illusory Ring of the Exalted.

I'm an hexxer, guard breaking is only possible through a shotgun spell at point blank (and even then I'm not sure it would work against every greatshield).
openings are hard to get, especially with the lag. I guess it's the same for everybody, but the number of times I get hit by a roll->attack when I got clearly out of the way is frankly annoying.
so, no secret weakness ahah. have you ever been hit by force or emit force? I wonder how much guard break they produce.

I do agree that over-reliance on shields is a bad idea, especially since now every blow seems to stun you a little. I didn't try greatshields so I don't know about them, but I really feel like "medium" shields have become quite useless in most situations.

Even if you're a hexer, if you see someone turtle, you ought to get close up and try to guard break normally. Not with your hex, but with the specific guard break action I mean (Up + R1 on PS3). Then afterwards shoot a hex. Hexes can 1-shot me if I don't block.

Are those force spells like Wrath of God in DkS1? In which case they do nothing to me lol.

There is no key to that door. You must go around and drop down from a ledge. I think its at the place where that fire lady is standing on another side of a gap. When you get into this room, jump down to the right. You find a treasure chest in that area, and you can open the door (no key required, the door can only be opened from one side).
Thanks. Gonna check that out.

MY GOODNESS:
Those mace knights in the dragon shrine do not let up!
How do you guys deal with them in melee fashion?

Run.

No, seriously. Run. The sword and the shield knights aren't too bad, but the hammer knights have like infinite stamina, and depending on how slow your weapon is, they might get you as you're attacking >:(

You have to be smart with your running though. The first two knights can be safely run past, but the area where there are two of them is hell.

It's not worth fighting them every time.

Yes, those I can handle and I did notice they have an infinite stamina. I hate running because I love to master every enemy in the game. Any good strategies or did FROM go a little overboard with them?

So...does anything change in NG++? I heard new items are dropped.

Also, is it just me or miracles are better than magic until the point the crazy shit like Soul Geyser becomes an option.

The first two lightning lances seem to make a lot more damage than the spells so far.

Get your INT to 40, the returns between 20-30 are poor, but hitting 40 gives you a boost. The hex guy on the way to huntsman's corpse sells a good staff. Archdrake. Make your Faith 8 I think it is and you can always use a soul vessel afterwards. If you're going to do that actually make your faith 20, he gives a good staff/caster set for free at 20+ INT/FTH. The staff is more for hexes though, so your Archdrake will be best, but I believe the armour is good. Your issue right now is he won't talk to you with your faith stat soo low.

The fire longsword is a good low dex/str weapon to pick up for an INT build as well.

How does the soul vessel work again?
Any penalty? I have two, around the same level as this guy, but faith of 4. Seems too expensive at this point to get it to 8. I could really respec just go get the merchant to talk to me, and then respect back to whatever I want for no penalty?

Hmm...if you can poison them, or do good range damage to them, that's a strategy. Otherwise I can't recommend anything besides waiting for openings, which is much easier to do with the sword and spear/shield knights.

In the area past the two knights there are a lot of stairs. Souls enemies tend to have trouble with elevation and will often miss you. Use that to your advantage.

Seems like a good update.

Bosses drop new souls which you can trade for weapons.

You could respec and back with no penalty if you have two soul vessels. But none of the stuff that merchant sells/gives you is very useful unless you're a caster/hexer.

Had the weirdest Bellbro invasion just then. I got invaded by a twink because she was holding either two Moonlight Greatswords or one of them plus a Bluemoon Greatsword. So I get caught by its special attack and promptly died, but not before I get invaded again. This guy though, was red, and came up behind the Bellbro and slaughtered her.

So weird.

But that already happened in NG+.

I am talking about finishing the game twice and thinking of going for the third one.

Unless I'm confused, on NG++ you get new souls. Like you get the Old Paledrake soul from Freja to get the Moonlight Greatsword. As for any cycles past that, nothing new happens.

Another thing
royal rat vanguard
shows how garbage the lock on in this game can be. I mean wow. Could you possibly pick an enemy further from my range?

Man. The
Gargoyles
are no joke. I spent forever banging my head against them tonight. I "stooped" to summoning.

Feel kinda cheap about summoning. Every-time I do, I feel like I'm cheating somehow. 0_o

How do you even put a summon sign there.

I got those.

So I guess that's all? lame

do you mean those magic weapon buffs? I'd try them but 30-40 points in INT is a lot for a dex focused build, I think.

It is a lot, but at a certain point you run into diminishing returns in your other main stats. If you're looking to do the maximum damage possible, switching to one of the magics with a X Weapon spell is how you do it once you're that high level.

I love invading bell tower as a blood bro. People flip out especially the bell invader

Man, shaded ruins is such a great area to invade people. The enemies hurt like trucks so the host isn't able to run away very easily.

edit: I managed to invade the same guy two times in a row. I bet he's happy.

Today I got summoned twice as a Sunbro.

Only to find my host fighting a blue ghost. I promptly killed them both times.

It's the only time I've seen the Blue Sentinels work. I feel dirty now.

So yeah I'm heading towards the castle. And thus far rat authority, smelter, and ruin sentinels have been the only real tough fuckers that I have struggled with. How many more bosses are there?

Could someone explain to me what the deal with the Vendrick fight?

The first time around I was doing about 180 damage per hit. Had him about half way within a few mins then he knocked me out. The next time I go in and I'm only getting 8 damage per hit. What gives?

To-do list until NG+ and beyond *

Royal Rat Authority
Ancient Dragon
King Vendrick

* Might end up starting a new character instead of finishing up this one if Ancient Dragon proves too annoying

I gotta say,
Dragon Aerie and the area leading up to it right when you fight the Guardian Dragon
might be one the best looking areas I've seen in any game in recent memory. Incredible art going on there. I spent far too much time just standing around admiring the visuals.

Also, killed
Ancient Dragon on my third try. First time I was just getting used to it, second I screwed up my position and got crushed by his tail and the third I just kicked his ass.
That is a spectacularly easy fight.

You didn't use up the Souls of a Giant did you?

You have to have 5 souls of the giant in your inventory to drop his defense to the minimum level

Still have my 3 giant souls. Only thing I did that was different, was head out and spend the 50k souls I had from the fight before heading straight back in.
First time i fought him there was no a fog gate and next time there was.

there seems to be a bug.

but 8 points of damage is very low.

I did at least 200 with 4 souls.
