There's definitely fujoshi appeal, but I don't think it's a bait show. It seems to actually care about portraying volleyball as an exciting sport, and the characters feel really intense. Good art, good music, really fluid direction. The adaptation is written by the guy who adapted Bunny Drop and Silver Spoon too, so I'll be surprised if he decides to fall into the trap of pandering excessively.
Like most sports manga Haikyuu!! has a strong fujoshi fanbase but I wouldn't say that it panders to them. It's not Kuroko's Basket.

Puchimas!: Petit iDOLM@STER - Series Review

Gonna keep this short because a review for this show doesn't have to be long. With that said, SO MUCH *SQUEE* IN THIS ANIME.

Obviously one would have to watch the original The iDOLM@STER anime to enjoy this show (or actually watch it in the first place) else the whole *SQUEE* factor will go over your head due to lack of attachment of the actual characters (unless you're the type who just goes *SQUEE* because of cute).

With Puchimas!!: Petit Petit iDOLM@STER (season 2) airing atm I will definitely get onto that show ASAP.

Best puchidol below:

Haikyuu!! 1

The premise and setup is pretty standard, but this was a well executed introduction, both from a production standpoint and as a way to establish the two lead characters. I'm intrigued and will keep watching. I've heard good things about Baby Steps, so alongside the continuing Ace of the Diamond, this might be a good season for sports anime.

Awwwww yeahhhhh, finally a good show sequel announce that isn't a bait-and-switch for an OVA.

Seikoku no Dragonar 1

I was expecting to like this show. On paper it sounds great - dragons are both seriously cool and surprisingly underrepresented in anime, so focusing on dragon training sounds like a nice gimmick to set this series apart from all the other generic "magic school" series, and of course the fact that the MC's dragon decides to take the form of a cute loli (with a predilection for nudity, no less) sounds like exactly my kind of thing.

So I'm really disappointed that this first episode felt so overwhelmingly bland. The character designs are so uninspired it's actually offputting, and the show is uninteresting to look at both in the visual and audio department. Even the dragons themselves look more like dumb reptile beasts than actual awesome dragons. Then there were those dream sequences, which were lewd to the point of being uncomfortable to watch (that character design was just plain awful and made this the second new show I've checked out in a row where I felt like I was watching a bad hentai).

I'm going to give this one more episode to impress me, since the loli heroine didn't appear until the end of this episode and she might turn out to be enough to save it. But so far, this feels like a show that needs dropping.

Reading a lot of Natsu no Zenjitsu yesterday, I felt like revisiting the author's older story, but this time in anime format.

27-year-old Koshiro Saeki has just broken up with his long time girlfriend and has lately been in a constant state of apathy, even before the break-up. He wasn't even the least bit shaken up when Shoko told him that she has fallen in love with another man, but rather, accepted it immediately. Because of this, the following day when she comes to retrieve her spare apartment keys, she questions whether Koshiro has ever loved anyone from the bottom of his heart.

Shoko could not know, but that very morning Koshiro's heart went aflutter from the sight of a certain young high school girl during his train commute. She has dropped her pass and Koshiro stepped out of the train to give it to her, so it was merely a little one-time event that was quickly forgotten. Or it would have been, had he not been by coincidence greeted by the same girl later that day after work, while clutching his just received 2 free amusement park tickets in his hand.

The high-schooler Nanoka gladly accepts the invitation to spend time at the amusement park. While there, the two open up about their troubles and Koshiro starts to develop feelings for this girl, despite the obvious 12-year age difference. Oh, if only that were the issue... Nanoka will eventually grow into an adult, but she'll never grow out of being his long separated sister, as we find out after their date at the park.

Pretty good first episode, it's was fittingly "quiet" and the voice acting so far has been very fitting for this kind of a serious story. I like that they picked an actual high schooler to do Nanoka's voice by speaking naturally rather than a more experienced VA who'd do her long practiced "cute anime girl voice" in roles like this. Koshiro's voice is also bass as fuck, which kinda caught me off-guard, but it does make him seem even more like a big, slow, cuddly teddy bear.

This show will get all kinds of deliberate awkward and I'll love every second of it.

I would love anime if the characters actually had adult relationships and sex. My problem with stuff like KLK is that it is all titlation for a childish audience, with no actual resemblance to anything normal or natural. Ragyo will grab her tits in ecstasy and that will be it, it will mean nothing and change nothing. Whereas in shows where the characters actually enter into sexual relationships or show direct sexuality it means something between those two characters. In KLK the person seeing the sexual titlation is the viewer, it is all directed at us in order to excite. Whereas in GoT when Tyrion is with the whores, it becomes part of his character and other people refer to it and define him by it. When Jon Snow sleeps with the red head his relationship with her changes, he breaks his vows which is a big thing etc. The acts have meaning. In Mahouka this guy will have a semi incestuous relationship with his sister and no one will ostracise him or look down on him. He won't even have to hide it, but at the same time nothing will actually come from it. He will have a harem of girls surrounding him but will very unlikely he will do anything with any of them, or even attempt to. Because he isn't a real character, with sexual feelings or needs, he exists purely as a power fantasy for teens and otaku.

From what I can gather Japan doesn't even have a strong religious no sex before marriage view either. When idol's get a boyfriend they are presumed to be having sex with them. But for some reason I can barely recall any anime where this is the case. You'd be grateful if you get hand-holding. Because they are fully removed from reality at this point, stuck in their own nest of tropes and expectations, falling over themselves to sell to a small audience.

I have too always wondered how so few animes have actual sex in them (really can't remember that many) . Just a lot of teasing. I guess Otakus don't wanna see something that they don't ever get to do...

White Album 2, go watch it.

Granted the actual sex scene isn't explicitly shown, its done in a mature manner in terms of relevance to the plot.

Baby Steps 1

This was the other sports series I was looking forward to, though more for the romance than anything else and it's kinda hard to judge that on the first episode. The main two people of this show seem to be a boy obsessed with taking nice & clean notes and a most;y carefree girl who has her eyes set on going pro.

The production values are fairly "no-frills" and by the book though they cranked it up where it matters most, the tennis scenes which fortunately doesn't seem to be pulling any of the (at times amazingly) dumb shit you'd find in something like The Prince of Tennis

And Daenerys getting pleasured by her maid in bed has what meaning? If I really wanted to be cynical I could just say the only difference is that GRRM wrote his porn with better plot. My prevailing point was that Ragyo was made into an oppressive presence in Satsuki's life, undercutting her outward dominance with a lack of personal control, yet it's claimed that we shouldn't even bother considering such a thing because it's anime and therefore all prurient trash.

Now, it's certainly dubious if the writers had decided that was the case at the start of the show, but at least they had a good moment going there. I also actually agree in general about the importance of establishing believable characters with relationships that hold some amount of weight. I would not agree that anime fails to provide this, even if many shows struggle with the concept or don't even aspire to it. As for adult sexual relationships in particular, then it'd probably be found in the kind of manga that isn't adapted into animated form, unfortunately.

Favourite new show so far:

MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA MIDARA

It's been such a long time since there's been a braindead non-stress Super Robot anime.

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii - 01

Hopefully it lives up to its potential. The manga is pretty darn good and the female lead is fantastic. I have have decently high expectations.

High school kids have sex in Sukitte Ii na yo. Well, not the main character of course, because she has to be pure, but her friends have no qualms about using the love hotel.

Funny enough, the same set up was true of B Gata H Kei from ages ago.

Nice writeup. From the first line, I take it you've read the manga - I'll be interested to hear which you prefer by the end.

Koi Kaze is probably the only incest show I would call legitimately great. More people should watch it.
Edit - Actually, if Utena and Penguindrum count, those are pretty great too.

I never equate adult relationships=having sex, so this is pretty much represent what I'm thinking, thank you.
Also, being (mostly) a broadcasted medium means that anime should adhere to moral/ethic standards on violence and sex. Such theme usually exist in written/manga medium. That doesn't mean it can't be in animation, but it would be in home distributed video and not broadcasted one.

Hmm, might end up a little more ecchi than I care for but for now it has a brown girl with a tail and the visual humor is working well so hey, why not?!

:D

I can already hear the squeeing.

Someone squeed? Musta been loud.

Love how not having an over-arching plot is somehow seen as a negative these days.

It was never a negative to me. Some shows are built for that and tie things up at the end.
It makes it easier to watch any episode at any point and still enjoy the show.

One thing that I don't understand is people judging an anime based of a first episode which I simply can't comprehend, like if I did that I would of dropped so many good anime like Hunter X Hunter, FullMetal Alchemist, Log Horizon, and etc.

This is true. I wont drop it after just that first episode.
Havent really seen everything yet.

Look what I found in Shinjuku today:

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
(maybe shardy heard that)

The Irregular at Magic High School
I dont know what it is... its not anywhere close to it and there are no similarities, but I'm getting a very Steins;Gate feel from this show. It just feels extremely familiar. Im not sure if its the voice actors, or the characters themselves, but I really like it and I dont know why

Thats an interesting observation but not one I felt myself.

Sometimes my tastes shock even me, I didn't think Love Lab would have been one of my favored anime from last year, but its quality shined through.

Understandable, as Love Lab was really excellent.

I imagine it is one of the reasons why these communal reviews exist in the first place.

We are the U. A. S. R.

Mahouka 1

Honestly, that was just boring. I kinda wish it was worse, I would have gotten some enjoyment out of it then.

I agree. If it had been one of those truly absurd kind of shows like code Geass it would hold my attention more right away. Still plenty of time though!

Mahouka - 01

Exactly how I remember it. First couple episodes will probably be boring with some action here and there. Hopefully the anime provides decent pacing and remains faithful to source material. All I wanna see is
Tatsuya go beast mode, just so you can a all realize how OP he is compared to everyone else at that segregated school
.

The fact that Koshiro has developed feelings for his sister has started making him feel extremely uncomfortable. Nanoka is acting sweet and loving, but Koshiro can't stand being called "onii-chan", getting heart-shaped bentos, and getting teased by his co-workers. They might think "aww, go home to your adorable little sister", "Have a nice lunch!" and other remarks are cute and harmless, but because they're so on the nose and keep reminding Koshiro of his uncomfortable feelings, it's actually tormenting him.

Nanoka wants to get closer to Koshiro (whether it's due to a slowly developing brother complex or because she now finally has a sibling and wants to be in good terms with him, is still up in the air at this point) but Koshiro on the other hand wants to increase their distance so he can get his mind in order. Nanoka comes to his workplace unannounced and that causes Koshiro to finally flip out and shout some harsh words at Nanoka.

Thankfully Koshiro thinks it over, and recognizes that he's been unfair and inconsiderate. He closes the distance again by escorting Nanoka home when she comes back from a night out with friends.

If I were to have one complaint, it's that Nanoka hit too many notes on that "doting, loving imouto" trope during this episode. Granted, her behaviour is more goal-driven than in most cases, and she has this idealistic image of relationship between siblings, which her friend already commented on.

Aw yiss, somebody watching Koi Kaze. *fingers crossed this starts a trend*

This show has a special place in my heart. It's beautiful.
I agree that Koi Kaze is a gem of a series, but you shouldn't get too excited because I already read the manga and was probably going to watch this adaptation eventually anyway. Maybe my episode impressions might sway others to watching/reading it, but I'm not holding my breath :p

Yeah, I've read the manga and I would agree with you about it probably being the only great one without any sort of big caveat attached.

Do you know if there are any significant changes between the anime and manga? I remember the opening chapter, ending and a few confrontations between Koshiro and his female friend most vividly from the manga, so changes to any other events and details I'd surely miss.

Yea, the more I think about Captain Earth the more the seems begin to show and the alarm bells begin to ring but I am still compelled enough to seek more episodes at this point.

But if it has seams that means it can fall apart gloriously later!

Crap phone photos if folks didn't see in the Aniplex Persona thread. REBELLION. SO PURDY.

What's interesting in this set is the Homura take 1 version included on the bonus bluray. . . The first take of Chiwa Saitos lines are very :O
She sounds super depraved as Devil Homura

That said, thinking about it, it would have been too drastic of a change had they stuck to that voice direction. Still neat.

Yeah it looks so nice. I cant wait to get mine tuesday!

No man, it's deeper than that. You just know when someone is the best girl on a show.

For me its the megane or maybe the black haired red eyes one...or the not-yayoi...oh shit I cant decide yet!

Ive been spreading this news far and wide on twitter!

Started and finished Madoka Magica last night. Solid show although i didn't expect it to have such a biblical message. Is Rebellion any good?

Madoka Magica rocketed to one of my top anime favorites. The movie supposedly goes a wildly different direction than the anime and has upset many people but I can deal with an alternate ending sort of movie since it is a separate entity.

Such an awesome reference. I love NNB with all my squee little heart.

Super slowpoke here, but I was just given the joy of attaining knowledge that Funi got the home video rights to a Ben-to release.

And they mentioned a summer release too. Very excited for this.

Principally in sibling relationships. I advise brushing your sister's teeth after partaking of a healthy breakfast of pancakes for maximum results. Suggested post coital dental activities for siblings include playing an online VR game and assassinating your master's favorite enemy.

THEY'RE SIBLINGS????

I need to hurry up with JoJo, this must be the best anime ever.

more should post in haikyu!! thread

Haikyu!! Episode 1

Strongest episode 1 of the season and even having know the material beforehand, it was really thrilling and exciting to make it span this episode. Had to really feel for the country team of amateurs coming to the big tournament to try to give it their all. I loved how they did band around their captain and even recognizing their own lack of abilities felt good enough to want to try to do their best and help him score if not to win. Koji and the other's tears, and then Hinata always saying dont mind and making them not feel bad too.

There were lots of nice little touches with king Kageyama, the sometimes robe appearing or jacket moving and everyone giving him that title. And then though grumpy, couldnt ever feel bad since he was truly the kind of serious player on their team and Hinata on the other.

They kept the volleyball explanations too, one of the best parts of sports series when they explain stuff in a real and competent manner.

Also enjoyed tumbling Hinata

It's been a couple of years since I've read it, and even longer since I've watched it, but from what I remember, the differences aren't too huge. I do recall some things being shuffled around. I think the overall time-scale might be shorter too, making Nanoka a bit younger in the end. And in general, I think the anime is a bit darker / less optimistic. Part of that comes from Koshiro's crushingly fantastic voice acting, maybe.

This is the best battleship ever, it even has bath pools and such for the crew, not to mention bringing maid costumes and radio drama with themselves too aboard this ship, those engineers on Earth had their priorities straight when designing the ship while they were starving on Earth and building it under dire circumstances, who wouldn't want to go on this voyage now, looks way better than living on Earth :D

While we had a small peek at Koshiro's childhood and had the siblings bond by exchanging the teddy bears they got from their mom as kids, this episode was much more about Nanoka's puberty kicking in in various ways.

Experiencing menstrual cramps and seeing her friend kiss a boy at school, Nanoka seems to have quite a bit on her mind now. She keeps the cramps secret from her family but because she's acting a bit strange, her dad, who's quite the doting parent, is worried sick.

She initially dodged the question when Koshiro asked about why she's taking pain medication, but later, planning to go out on a walk at a very late hour, Koshiro approached her again right before she steps out and thankfully, Nanoka gives him a straight answer. Smart of her to not be hardheaded about it. The two go walk outside and have a talk.

This is the episode where Nanoka becomes aware of the possibility that she has feelings for Koshiro. Having friends' lovetalk on her mind on her way back from school on a rainy day, right as she calls out to Koshiro who's surprisingly turned up with an umbrella, she stops herself mid-shout and just stares at his back for a second. Because of a bit of foreshadowing in her thoughts earlier, she quickly realizes that Koshiro is making even small things in her life feel fresh and exciting, something she was told she'd feel if she was ever in love.

Time just flew by this episode. So very sweet

I think the overall time-scale might be shorter too, making Nanoka a bit younger in the end. And in general, I think the anime is a bit darker / less optimistic. Part of that comes from Koshiro's crushingly fantastic voice acting, maybe.
Hmm, a subtly darker tone would not hurt this story so that's good to hear.
