Charizard and Greninja announced for Smash Bros.

Gotta say I was kinda disappointed, was anticipating Mewtwo's return based on the cave but he looks like a fun character to play.

Greninja always screamed Smash potential. I just think many people didn't consider him because it felt like a situation where if you include him you have to include Chesnaught and Delphox (or one of their forms), as well. I think this was due to how TPC didn't give any of the new starters any special emphasis, so they all felt equal... Made it seem unlikely that one of them would become a Smash Brother.

But Sakurai (and TPC) made the right choice -- The tongue-whipping, water-shuriken-slinging frog ninja, Greninja!

Greninja is the 2nd best Pokemon that could ever be added to a Smash game.
1st being Hawlucha of course.

Loving it, we were having a smash tournament during the direct, and I just screamed "YES YES YES" when I saw Greninja

never heard of greninja. Seems pretty lame imo. All these humaniod pokemon miss the spirit of pokemon imo. Have never liked them and I think overall this is a terrible addition to the game. Many other better choices imo.

...Huh?

Because there were never "humanoid" type Pokemon....

Mr. Mime, Jynx, Mewtwo, Machop, Machamp, Machoke, Hitmanchan, Hitmonlee, Electabuzz, Magmar, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath etc etc. Not to mention the numerous Pokemon who stand on their hind legs all day.

I don't think you know what you are talking about.

So, does Greninja hurt Takamaru's chance any?

Pretty excited regardless. Froakie was my pick from pretty early on, though I'm seriously gonna miss Squirtle and Ivysaur. =\

Takamaru's more of a samurai right?

I'd rather have Lon'qu

I didn't consider him because he wasn't revealed to exist until October. But still, quiet happy with him. Still hoping both Jigglypuff and Mewtwo are in, though. Gonna miss Ivysaur, but Pokemon Trainer mechanics sucked. Hated having to ever touch that god awful Squirtle.

People hate Charizard for some reason. People just act like they have bad taste for hipster nerd forum points, but in reality know Zard is the best.

Anything that's popular, without fail, has a serious amount of passionate detractors on the internetz.

Death, taxes and haters. The three certainties.

I don't think Ivysaur and Squirtle are necessarily gone. They could easily still be their own characters.

Fair enough. Pokemon has 5 past reps to draw from though. If I had to guess their likelihood, I'd guess Jigglypuff>Mewtwo>Ivysaur (or Venasaur, if they're going for the whole 3 fully evolved starters thing)>Squirtle>Pichu.

Pokemon has too many reps.
Too many damn Pokemon in this Smash, eh..
These people get it. The emphasis on this series has gotten stronger with every entry. Jigglypuff is pretty much a lock at this point, so I can only hope Pokemon Trainer has been axed in favor of another, more deserving franchise/character.
I also can't believe people actually want Mewtwo back. He had his time to shine, plus he doesn't represent the entire series. Let him go. If Sakurai decided to bring him back, then by that logic he'd probably say "fuck it" and bring back Pichu as well. If either of those two were to make in alongside Greninja, Lucario, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Charizard and Pokemon Trainer, we might as well start calling the game Super PokeBros.

Humanoid? Really?

Totally. Stands on two legs, has two arms and a head in the same general configuration as a human. I think it's a shame too, would be fun to try to have a 4-legged character.

Also: Is that his tongue? If so, that's awesome. I have no exposure to this gen of pokemon, so I'd never seen this thing before. Seems ok, but if he uses his tongue as a scarf, that elevates him to dope-nasty status.

Everyone knows a pure pokemon fighting game would be the best thing ever so I have no issues with more Pokes in smash :P They are all very different from each other for the most part.

Yes that's his tongue

Not even a video of the many times superior Spiegel Gundam who is clearly a ninja, smh son.

A German ninja, if I may add!

Which is funny, because Greninja is French ninja!

He uses it for attacking too.

This entire post is full of fuck

I highly doubt that.

Anyway, Charizard and Greninja. Awesome. Way to go, Sakurai.
Wonder what Charizard's newfound down-special will be.

Best Direct ever.

Yes Greninja is humanoid. Not the point I was making.

"There are too many Pokemon now!"

Uh, no. Jigglypuff and Mewtwo could be added and it would have the same number of playable Pokemon as Brawl.

PT has obviously been axed because they said no more characters that transform mid battle and Charizard is unfortunately on his own now. People want Mewtwo back because of his large presence still in the series + because he was always a unique character, unlike Pichu who was a straight up clone. It's 6 characters from one of their biggest franchises. There will be dozens more to choose from as well. I don't see the problem.

I always thought it's always him and Blaziken. OK with either.

From a gameplay perspective, Greninja doesn't look like he's bringing much new to the table. He's the least interesting newcomer I've seen yet. I still think he's awesome. I was on team Froakie in Y.

The simultaneous reveal of Charizard and Greninja in that video is almost poetic. It's the best of old-school and modern pokemon.

See? They can coexist ;-)

Oh look, a drive-by post from a Pokemon fan, devoid of any reasoning as to why he disagrees. How unexpected.

-The reason charizard is there because "no mid-battle transformations" ousted pokemon trainer. Listing both as separate characters doesn't make sense.

-Assuming pichu and mewtwo are a both-or-neither thing is pure conjecture:
Pokemon seems to be stuck in a position where it seeks to cater to both newer generations and the people who only care about the original games. There was a time when Mewtwo was pokemon's most-loved and threatening legendary, and a lot of those people dislike him being mothballed in favor of newer games. There was never a time when pichu was the franchise's foremost anything besides "oh hey look that new baby pokemon thing? we made a form before pikachu please love the idea of baby pokemon and breeding." It didn't work all that well. Pre-evolutions wore out their novelty fast, and more people still prefer pikachu. Hell, most people only remember pichu was a thing because of how horrible he was in melee.

Basically, pulling examples that make no sense just to attempt to support personal preferences as fact makes arguments annoying to read.

It'd be one thing to continuously make adult link reflect his newest iteration. it's another to wipe out unique characters. If I could have my way, no characters would ever be cut through the magic of expansions and dlc.

What total crap.

I don't like Star Fox, so let's strip all of those characters out. Ditto F-Zero, or Fire Emblem. They're just wasted slots, because I don't like them- they'd be put to far better use putting more Pokémon in! Screw anyone who likes them, I declare that they're wasted slots.

Ease up, there. I never said any of those extreme words you put in my mouth.

What I did say was, "for me" and "I think." Personally, I'm not a Pokemon fan, so this is a natural reaction to have. I like the first-generation characters, because they've stood the test of time, and I like having a representative from whatever's currently popular in the franchise -- character-wise, that's what Smash is to me: a Nintendo time capsule that explores its history and its state at the moment.

As I said in the Smash OT, I'm glad that the majority of fans dug these reveals. But they just didn't do anything for me because I have no attachment to the characters. I'd be more excited to see R.O.B. or Mr. Game & Watch return (please don't make me say "personally" again), so I stand by what I said -- every time a new Pokemon that I don't care for shows up, I get down because there's less a chance of someone I like returning. Because I am a human being who has likes and dislikes, see? Does that mean that I want to take all your favorite characters out? Nope, never said that.

Preferences and personal reactions, man. They're okay to have.

1: Pokemon is Nintendo's second or third biggest franchise, so it makes sense to add a few.

2: Currently, there are 4 playable Pokemon characters. Guess what other series has 4 playable characters...Super Mario. LoZ has 4 as well.

So why is it not acceptable for Pokemon to have 4?

I highly doubt that.

There was a fire dash move it did. Maybe that's it?

...except he was right in that so far there're only 4 Pokemon reps. You might as well complain that Smash Bros. is full of Mario reps.

Flare Blitz?
It kind if looked like his Up Special from Brawl only sideways to me.
Could be Flame Charge as well.
