Charizard and Greninja announced for Smash Bros.

Man, Pokken really needs to start being a thing. I'm fine with all these Pokemon reps, but at this point there's too many different guys I want to see in a fighting game like this, and just simply not enough room in this specific fighting game.

Disappointed that Charizard got the spot instead of Squirtle (who was a blast to play in Brawl), but I can understand why they chose him. Greninja was a great choice, and definitely at the top of the shortlist of Gen 6 pokemon suited for SSBU.

I wonder whether they're going to have Mewtwo's mega forms segregated between versions. If he gets in the game, that would certainly cause one hell of a scene.

Fuck Jigglypuff and Mewtwo, I have Greninja now. That's all I ever wanted. Don't even care if this comment gets me flamed to shit, I love Greninja so so much and I'm totally pumped to see him in the game as a playable character!

My favorite Pokemon since the first generation made it in. I love you Sakurai!

I don't like Greninja as a roster choice. It seems weird to include random Pokemon. At least Lucario had a movie.

chesnaught is better anyway

They have the first generation's most popular starter representing gen 1, and the most recent generation's most popular starter representing it.

-The reason charizard is there because "no mid-battle transformations" ousted pokemon trainer. Listing both as separate characters doesn't make sense.

-Assuming pichu and mewtwo are a both-or-neither thing is pure conjecture:
Pokemon seems to be stuck in a position where it seeks to cater to both newer generations and the people who only care about the original games. There was a time when Mewtwo was pokemon's most-loved and threatening legendary, and a lot of those people dislike him being mothballed in favor of newer games. There was never a time when pichu was the franchise's foremost anything besides "oh hey look that new baby pokemon thing? we made a form before pikachu please love the idea of baby pokemon and breeding." It didn't work all that well. Pre-evolutions wore out their novelty fast, and more people still prefer pikachu. Hell, most people only remember pichu was a thing because of how horrible he was in melee.

Basically, pulling examples that make no sense just to attempt to support personal preferences as fact makes arguments annoying to read.

It'd be one thing to continuously make adult link reflect his newest iteration. it's another to wipe out unique characters. If I could have my way, no characters would ever be cut through the magic of expansions and dlc.

I'd argue he still is both of those things.

I want to drop the line that the trailer was amazing. I'm looking forward to give those characters try since they seem to got their moveset adjusted.

Why are people doubting Jigglypuff of all Pokemon? That one is probably a lock just because of series seniority. Your concern is warranted however if your a fan of Squirtle or Ivysaur, or still holding out for Mewtwo.

Also I'm seriously concerned about Snake right now. Pac-Man is literally staring at us in the face with all of those Namco items in the game, and are we really going to see two 3rd party character reveals between now and Smash 3DS?

It could be something like Razor Shell (Greninja doesn't learn it).
Regardless, they're definitely taking serious liberties with that.

Whoa, was not expecting this...

Actually, I thought Charizard would likely end up standalone since he's easily the most popular...

Think we have a Grass Pokemon left? I could see them using Sceptile
since Hoenn will be confirmed

Good choices, but now I wonder why it was necessary to bring Lucario back. Greninja's moveset reminds me of Brawl Lucario's. And if Jigglypuff returns, the roster will have so many Pokemon that Mewtwo's chances look slim.

To the people worried about Jigglypuff: back in Brawl, she was not known to be in the game until a bit after the game was launched (due to unlocking her after beating SSE).

So, there is a precedent for never being revealed prior to a game's release but still being in the game. Relax.

This has a lot to do with my response as well. I think that was part of my disappointment. When Lucario was revealed, I was really surprised -- as a Pokemon outsider, he seemed very much like the "of-the-moment" Pokemon during the Wii/DS (i.e. Brawl) era. To me, it seems more sensible to ditch Lucario and put whatever the Pokemon-of-the-moment is (be it Greninja or what have you) on the roster in his place. His seeming similarity to Lucario, as a fighter, brings the feeling of Pokoverkill home for me.

However, given the decision to split Samus/Zero Suit Samus and Zelda/Sheik into characters of their own, and the fact that we still have E3 and who knows how many Nintendo Directs to go till Smash Bros. Wii U launches, I'm hoping Sakurai is being a lot more liberal with the roster than we initially expected. Best case scenario, we just have a huge roster this time round and everybody's happy.

This isn't really accurate though. Lucario is HUGE, easily the largest name Pokemon since Charizard/Pikachu/Metwo and his popularity isn't going down any time soon.

Because he is popular

Also he wrecks B/W2

Might I just say....

How fucking AWESOME the opening was? I loved that representatives from all 6 gen's of Pokemon were all gathered up. Together like a family. :')

I wonder what Swirlix would do

chesnaught is better anyway

I like Greninja's appearance, but yay for Chesnaught brethren!

Not really. Lucario is slow compared to Greninja, and the latter is more speed oriented. Feels more like a defensive Shiek with multiple recovery options. Right off the bat their methods of fighting are different (monk vs ninja)

Also wat, Lucario is never flavor of the month. It actually has a lasting appeal.

Yep. They tried introducing Zoroark as the new "badass" pokemon in gen 5 but it couldn't outshine Lucario.

Chespin fans am cry. Nintendo just straight up said who is the superior starter. I still hope Jiggly makes it in though.

To this and all the other quotes of that nature, I say -- "oh." Like I said, I don't follow Pokemon, so I hadn't seen Lucario pop up much at all. Bear with me, it's just salty times for folks who don't follow Pokemon and were looking forward to some new character reveals today.
