I don't "get" TLOU

I can see where the OP is coming from.

I'm actually quite confused on whether I truly love the game like OMG 11/10! or just appreciate it for what it is.

I can't even wrap my head around the choice of words I'm using right now. The bottom line is, it's acceptable to have a feeling that you're unsure if you should have the same popular opinion about a game.

For this game to even make me think about it psychologically, it feels like a 10/10 to me.

I'm on the same boat.

I wish there was an "AI" mode that would play the entire game like a movie for me. Or alternatively, I could just watch a "lets play" video, I'm curious about the story but the gameplay isn't for me, I fucking hate stealth.

Or could have a friend come over and play the whole thing for me while I watch and eat some popcorn.
 
I thought it was okay. Technically impressive, great music, so-so gameplay, and while the story was well written I found it supremely predictable and knew where it was going right after the prologue, so nothing really shocked me going forward. It had some cool moments but nothing about it blindsided me or left me feeling like I had just experienced some kind of phenomenon in storytelling. Basically very well realized but nothing impactful or profound to me.
 
I enjoyed it, and I can acknowledge that it is a well-made, emotional game.

But can't see why its GOTY or even GOT Generation.

I preferred Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite last year. Found it a bit *gasp* boring.

Will probably double dip though.
 
Honestly i thought the game was overated the first play through, but on the second playthrough u can take your time and actually enjoy and appreciate it a bit more and i enjoyed it far more than the first time i finished it

People don't like things. People don't like what people like. People don't like people liking things. Popular things sometimes upset people, especially when it pertains to branding psychology.

What do you suppose the odds are, that after Uncharted 4 gameplay is shown... we will have a thread within a week or so, about how Drake is a mass murderer. It's guaranteed to pop up sometime before launch.

In any case, it's okay to not "get it," but I certainly would wait until I completed it to make a final judgement.

Survivor is even more intense, low health plus an extreme lack of supplies and no listening mode.

This is where the game comes alive IMO. When I played on normal it was an ok experience, but I felt way too overpowered. I had multiple of every offensive throwable weapon at all times and tons of bullets. I could rambo my way through, it made no sense when the cutscenes showed struggle but the gameplay was balls out action.

On survivor the gameplay mirrors the story, you have to make tough choices. Should I craft a molotov or health pack? Should I engage or use stealth? Should I quietly takedown enemies or draw attention with traps/explosives and flank? It's far more tactical and satisfying. The way the controls are set up really works well for quickly going from stealth to action and back to stealth.

On a pure mechanics level, ND did an amazing job with TLOU. Uncharted had decent controls, TLOU has nearly perfect controls and combat. It's a huge improvement and it's one of the reasons I love playing the game.

I played on Hard on my first (and only) play through, and it was tense as hell. I'm not normally a huge stealth fan, but the atmosphere and story kept me really interested.
 
It's a fantastic "experience" to be sure, highly atmospheric and all that, though I am not as quite agreed as calling it a fantastic "game".

Uuuh, how should I put it.... playing it from the beginning to the end is a great thing but the gameplay mechanics themselves are nothing special... that's kind of how I look at TLOU.
 
thought it was good. Pretty much the best "AAA cinematic game" yet. Good meaty gameplay (played on hard), decent script, good VA, good presentation.
 
It's got some of the best characterization, environmental design, and storytelling of any game ever.

Personally, the gameplay was nothing special. It wasn't as garbage as uncharted, but it wasn't great either. That and the fact that I am so fucking bored of zombie apocalypses and TPS/FPS hold it back from being one of my GoATs.

I really wish that they had given you more time to play around in the quarantine zone. If they had combined that with better stealth gameplay, I would be very happy.
 
OP, I think you did come to this question honestly and not trying to seek validation for having your opinion. (Either way, you can always tell Gaf to eff off if you can back up why you are saying something).

That said, I thought the gameplay was a little "squishy" myself. I thought the graphics, story, and acting, along with good (but not zomg amazing) gameplay carries it along way.

If ya didn't like it, ya didn't like it.

I only ever played on the highest difficulties. But from my understanding of the lower difficulties, it's a totally different game. Listen mode should never have been a thing as well. The game should be about scavenging every drawer to find those little bits and pieces, and caring about whether you can actually afford to use your ammo in a life or death situation. On normal mode you find something in almost every drawer and you're never really low on ammo

Kind of defeats the purpose of the game IMO

I dunno man, melee was basically 1 step away from just being straight up QTEs. The guns were extremely underwhelming, thought not terrible. Stealth was a joke. There were only like 4 or 5 enemy types... and amongst the humans it broke down to "that guy has a red jacket, he's going to throw molotovs at me", like I'm playing a damn SNES game. The environment was unbelievably gorgeous and detailed, but you were essentially never allowed, let alone required, to make clever use of the environment beyond avoiding enemies joke patrol patterns.

Yeah, game should have just had hard and survivor modes. Unfortunately with modern gaming you need easy and normal for people that are terrible at games and have no patience.
 
I really like the intro a lot but the setting and stories are very trite and cliche for the most part. I just couldn't get into it.
 
It's simple: You find the gameplay underwhelming because you've played shooters RE4 and Gears, and stealth games like Splinter Cell and Thief. You don't find the story exceptional because you've played Mother 3 or any of the many other games with better stories. The horror aspect seems boring because you've played REmake or maybe even ZombiU. Makes sense to me.

Same for me. Actually, my friend didn't really like the gameplay either. Not sure what to say. I played it on the hardest difficulty from the start and I loved that feeling of "I only have this many items to play with. What do I make?" And I liked how it felt to take out the enemies one by one as I snuck around and had to make some strategic decisions on how to get through some parts.

I guess some games just don't groove well with some people. I don't really like first person shooters. I thought I'd never like first person games again until I played Outlast. Guess first person horror games are fun for me.

Well... depends on what kind of Third Person Shooter that you are after. It's mechanically sound but nothing that make me pause to consider, "wow, these guys are geniuses!"

I am sure that out of those 123403742307423074230742307423047230 praises towards TLOU that the world generates every day, there's a good amount of them coming from people playing easy and normal.
 
stealth was meh. mgs4 did it better and had way more variety tackling stealth. gunplay was alright, best aspects were shotgun and weapon sway.

my problem with the game was the lack if variety. yeah, first half is all about going into an area and clearing it. it gets better once you unlock more weapons and the game uses more open areas instead of the usual corridors.

for me, personally, it didn't click with me until the fall chapters. i started opening up to it after pittsburgh, which was halfway. everything until after pittsburgh was plain forgettable for me.

Melee had hostage grabs, stealth kills, a strong one on one system with dodges and breakable melee items that needed to be conserved like all ammo. How is that like a QTE? Guns were the among the meatiest I've used in a game, fantastic sound, response and enemy hit reactions made them very good to use. Not sure what more you could have wanted?

More enemy types would have been welcome, but I don't think the game was hurt by it. There was a good balance between the abilities of the Clicker types and humans

Environment constantly required you to scavenge for items, ammo, find cover. Certain areas required you to take careful consideration of which enemies you took out in what order due to the wide open nature of them. Encounters with Clickers required you to use sound to manipulate them to open up paths to stealth through. I'd say the game had some of the better use of its environments of any I've played. What more would you have asked for?

Main reason for all the praise is because it's a good/great story in gaming, and everyone wants to see more of that...

Still not going to capture everyone, I've read it effects ppl who have kids differently...ya know, opinions...

You're saying it's unfortunate that the game has optional easier modes. Sorry dude, games aren't made just for you. If you like challenge, cool, play on the harder difficulties. Some people don't want to struggle through a game. And for some people, the easier difficulties are a struggle. I'd rather give people options so that the game is accessible than appease some pretentious "core".
 
I didn't like it either, although I didn't get all that far. Up to the
sniper part where you have to protect Henry, Sam, and Ellie.

Basically I realized that I was playing the game less for the game itself, and more because I wanted to see how the story progressed. When I feel like I'm forcing myself to play a game, that's a huge red flag that I just don't like it and should stop.

I can't really say why I didn't like the gameplay either. I think it's just that I found the combat to be extremely frustrating and a chore to go through. Something about the shooting just didn't feel good. The stealth felt awkward too. *shrug*

I like the slower paced, weighty style of TPS. I'd say only Gears comes close, but even that feels a bit clunky by comparison. Uncharted is too loose. Can't really think of many other competitors, I'm liking MGS5's controls though
 
I didn't hate the game, but I felt it was very overrated. The gameplay was very repetitive, and while the story kept me playing until the end, I felt a lot of the writing was bad. For example, what could have been a very touching scene was ruined by the line "Everyone left me, except for f'ing you." I had to shake my head in disbelief, and it was so awkward it took me out of the experience. Why was it necessary to use the f word in that line? I'm no prude, but that word just felt really out of place in a scene like that.
 
I felt the same way through the first several hours of the game. I had an aversion to the use of firearms, a desire to religiously conserve all supplies, and a deeply ingrained belief that once I got spotted, I may as well kill myself and restart the segment. After a while though, I became much more accustomed to using what the environment gave me. I was never frivolous with my tools, but I certainly stopped being stingy. Once I got comfortable making full use of all the tools at my disposal, the game became much much more fun. I stopped playing just to get to the next conversation and started appreciating the combat for its own sake. All the molotovs and ammo in the world though should never make you forget your old friends bottle and brick. Those two will take you far.

Use your guns. Use your tools. Use everything. Don't be stingy. Get aggressive. It's a fun game.

There were options I guess, but things like taking hostages was completely pointless and way too risky. You didn't have these options against infected, obviously, who make up much of the game. Simply isolating one dude and running up and smashing him for a 1HKO with a board or bat got me through 90% of the game. And if I was caught, no big deal, you just run and take some cover and everyone forgets about you as they wander around blindly. If you ever get in hand to hand combat, you literally just mash 'x' until Joel smashes the unfortunate due into furniture.

The guns felt nice, but almost every single encounter in the game was from about 30 feet away, mostly in hallways. The bow was awesome but ammo was so scarce I never used it. You basically just swapped between the pistol and the shotgun all game.

Also, enemies taking so many shots from something that sounded like a nuclear bomb going off was kind of meh. Not as bad as Uncharted at least.

Man, what stealth games have you played? I honestly can't name a single stealth game with more mediocre level and encounter designs.

I'm sorry this sounds to me like you played it like an Uncharted game. Running up and meleeing guys and then sprinting to a safe zone or shooting them from 30 feet away after you alert the enemies? I've played a lot of stealth games, and I haven't played any like that. I guess if it got you through the game then more power to you, but I don't think the game was designed to accommodate that style of gameplay

When I played it, I certainly didn't have enough supplies to play in such a run and gun style so I'm assuming that's the easier modes.

Also maybe work on your aim for shooting? One hit to the head, two hits to the chest

Saying the level design is bad doesn't make it so. Give me some examples? I've only heard praise for TLOUs level design up until now

Because both of their emotions were boiling over in that scene, and people tend to swear to get their point across? Wasn't out of place at all
