Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Watching this and hearing them mention Soul Caliber 2 at the end kind of makes me want Nightmare in this game over Pacman. I think he'd be more interesting in terms of combat.

Give Pacman the Namco stage or something instead.

Damn, revealing a game you dont have approval for on the stage almost forces NAmco to approve

Miyamoto has guts to pull a stunt like that

Sakurai "I really like Goroh as an assist trophy, his sword swings are very powerful and he looks funny running around the stage. He's the only f-zero related thing in this game due to time constraints

...

Haha just kidding, we'll also have captain falcon in the game, as a trophy so you can remember your fond memories playing him in smash until now"

Totally see it happening

If I had to guess now I'd say 49 seems like a decent roster count for smash 4 (4 rows of 10 and a 5th row of 9 and random) would give us 10-14ish newcomers depending on cuts. Heck maybe Smash 4's starting roster will be the same as Brawl's final roster wouldn't that be crazy

49 is decent...? I think it'll be 39-45. 49 seems pretty insane, quite honestly.

Nightmare doesn't really have the appeal that third party characters should have.

Everyone knows Pac-man. Nearly nobody knows Nightmare.

Who gives a shit.

I would be hype if a soul calibur guy got in.

Pekemen go screw off a cliff.

NOOO wait.

DO IT SAKURAI

you don't even gotta change the voice.

I don't know why but after the direct, I feel like the roster's going to be big. 49 is actually looking on the lower side of things now, considering that transformation characters are getting full spots, Sakurai's gone on to openly note that this game's development is going wonderfully, and all the extra polish time going on between now and the Summer/Winter releases.

I'm thinking 50 to 54/55.

Brawl had 35, and Sheik and ZSS are now separate characters. Add the 6 newcomers announced and you have 43. So you're saying at best we'll get two more newcomers, then the rest will come with a cut? And at worst we're already at 4 cuts? :lol

Character decision is done by popularity and scope...not to mention Sakurai's whims. As such, a character that very few people know from a third party is an illogical decision.

I'm really opposed to the idea of EVERY character needing an alt costume.

One of my first posts on here said the same thing but I think it detracts from what the characters are about and how iconic they are as individuals.

It seems superfluous and while it's a nice way to represent more of the Nintendo universe as a whole I think it should only be used where applicable for example a character like Wii Fit Trainer or Villager who are the same character but it's merely a matter of gender. And in Wario's case he's equally recognised for his Mario appearances but also his own home series.

I think with Mac he's another one off. I wouldn't look into it too much and creating alternates is still quite taxing on resources and Sakurai wants the game out ASAP. Alternates aren't essential and as much as I'd like to play as the likes of Princess Daisy, Dry Bowser, or Dixie Kong, unless they change the voices of the characters it's still going to be Daisy moving like Peach and they have totally different personalities. Not that I want Daisy in despite my current avatar but it feels cheap and kinda loses some of the integrity of both characters that way just because they may be similar.

Call me a purist but it's just something I see thrown around a lot whether it be here or on blogs or speculation videos. I think the character's are fine as they are. I've had my money churned out many a time by the likes of Capcom over the years but it feels wrong in a game like Smash.

On a separate note i wanna say though that in Gamexplain's latest video I did agree with the whole first person camera angle thing. Before watching his video I contemplated if it was a new extra mode because they've used that viewpoint multiple times now.

Perhaps there's an Event Match where you have to play as Wire frame Mac and beat DK or something. It could make for some really crazy situations as a single player mode and as he said you can appreciate different elements of the stages more.

While I understand, I don't care.

Sakura, give link a LOZ version of a Siegfried costume , do it.
I want characters with costumes from games they are not from.

I mean adding 10 newcomers doesn't seem that crazy, and we're splitting up transformations which can help pad out the numbers. Heck just looking at the rumored/"leaked" characters

Mii, Pac Man, Palutena, Shulk, Chorus Dude, and Chrom

That brings us to 35, then add the vets which are likely back (Rob, Ice Climbers, Ness, C Falcon, Jigglypuff, Ganondorf, meta knight, Wario, Mr G&W, Falco) that brings us to 45 without the maybe characters like lucas, wolf, ike, ivysaur, squirtle, and snake along with any more newcomers that weren't rumored/"leaked"

49 doesn't seem like such a stretch unless you think a bunch of the unconfirmed vets are being cut or we're not getting more then 1-2 additional newcomers.

The character separation means they had to put more work into each of them. As Sakurai has noted, adding characters is like multiplication, not a simple addition. If they were going for character balance first-and-foremost, then 49 characters just doesn't seem viable.

Also the fact we have our first stage where you can't be smashed off the side with the Balloon Fight stage made me think a Pacman stage would work the same way like in the games.

So on your 39-44 roster who is being cut from the current unconfirmed vets and how many more new comers are we getting?

Unconfirmed vets

Wario
Rob
C falcon
Ganondorf
Jigglypuff
Ness
Lucas
Meta Knight
Wolf
Ike
Mr G&W
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Snake

If 44 is the max you think we'll get that means we're only getting 15 more characters between newcomers and vets. Either we know all but 2-3 of the newcomers or a whole bunch of original move set vets are being cut

You forgot Ice Climbers and Falco too :p

oh btw was there an updated image for the cell phone screensaver with all the characters on it? would love to have it with the new characters

No way Captain Falcon is getting cut, though I do understand the fear. I love Ness, and even though I logically know he's not going to get cut, I'm going to keep being a little nervous about it until he's confirmed to be returning.

Ness, Captain Falcon, and maybe Jigglypuff are really the only remaining vets I truly care about returning at this point. All the other vets I was pining for (Zelda, Sonic, Toon Link) are already back.

I expect a few characters to get cut. As far as my predictions (In order of most likely to least likely):

Ike
Snake
Lucas
ROB
Wolf
Jigglypuff (only to make room for another, more relevant Pokemon)

I don't think that most of those will be cut, but I think those are really the only ones that could possibly be cut. The only ones I really expect are Ike and Snake...maybe Lucas.

"Okay, kids. Watch this Smash Bros. Direct and use the knobs in front of you to show whether you like something or not."

"i don't get it! They like the moves, they like the graphics, that one kid seems to really like Ridley being a stage boss, what more do they want?"

"Okay, now raise your hand if you want this to be an incredibly balanced game where no character has an extreme advantage over another,"

"Ooh, ooh, me, I do, I do!"

"Alright, now raise your hand if you want tons of characters, each more fantastical than the last, represented faithfully to their own game universes without concern about interplay with each other."

"So you want fifty or more characters while wanting it to be far more balanced than ever before."

"And also you should win things for playing!"

Brillant !

Agreed. I will accept whatever variation of Ridley you suggest, but must hit the roster. Someone just needs to officiate, I guess?

The deal is done! SmashGAF are our judges, juries and executioners.

One day Waluigi will make it. One day...

Only if he kept trying his best.

His hair is all over the place. Is see blue, black, and brown in the first three images. Lol
Takamaru isn't blue haired though. That's just sprite limitations at work there. See Pink Haired Link in ALttP.

I can't dismiss both of your claims, but I think they are going to stick with blue haired Takamaru because there are three recent models of Takamaru having blue hairs.

I would be okay with Takamaru being Black or Blue haired if Kamiya or Sakurai decided to reboot his appearance.

I think over 50 is fine.

I'm just saying, don't be surprised to see some sort of Moridoom-like domination in there.
As long as everyone is viable, I am happy. Nothing below C tier. No ridiculous crap like Brawl Ganondorf this time. That is all I hope for.

Only one man makes Morridoom work, and the fact is that most of us will never play at a level where tiers are a deciding factor. It is mostly a tool for whiners while players like JWong get second place at Evo with Storm.

Sorry, but as long as there are around 50 characters, that's not gonna happen. Especially in a game like Smash Bros which has a large focus on "fun" gameplay over "competitive" gameplay.

Moridoom?
Honestly, even centralization doesn't bother me, as long as stuff is balanced. Gen 2 and 3 Pokemon have shown it can be done with how dominating Snorlax (we're talking 90% usage with this guy) and Tyranitar were in each of those

Nightmare doesn't really have the appeal that third party characters should have.

Everyone knows Pac-man. Nearly nobody knows Nightmare.

Pac-Man doesn't really have the appeal that third party characters should have either. Who is going to buy the game just to play as Pac-Man? I just don't see that happening. His series doesn't have that kind of personality following. That's the biggest problem I see with his inclusion, especially if it'll actually cost not only game budget itself, but also licensing from Namco.

49 is decent...? I think it'll be 39-45. 49 seems pretty insane, quite honestly.

Brawl already had 39 characters though... Sakurai always counted transformations as individual characters, so that doesn't change much. They had to be balanced both as an individual character and as part of a larger combined character, so I don't see how that'd make it easier to balance them. Do I really need to link Sakurai's quote again?

We already get things like a Captain Falcon with Blood Falcon's emblem and Peach in Daisy colors, including hair and skin color change. If you think alternates would hurt characters' identity, I don't see how those things aren't doing that already. If they already give Peach's Daisy colors, outright giving her Daisy's hairstyle and dress model, which would mostly change her front bangs and some more dress details, is hardly that big of a stretch. As far as representation and moveset goes, we have a case like Ness, where he mostly isn't even using his own attacks.

Now, we haven't seen alts that actually change a characters' name, but the Wii Fit Trainer suggests that even voice isn't out of limit this time. Besides, this time we seen to get a quite few trophies modeled just for Smash again. If they're going out of their way to make new models, why not make models that can actually add to the gameplay's visual too, and not just the trophy gallery?

It's not about playing as Pac-Man, it's about having Pac-Man in Smash as a symbol. Playing as Mega Man looks relatively uninteresting compared to Rosalina & Luma, Little Mac, Zero Suit Samus etc but there's no question having him in is a massive boost to Smash, and the same would apply to Pac-Man.

Personally I'd be hyped to see Mario v Mega Man v Sonic v Pac-Man battles in Smash.
