Same here. Maybe the studio realised there is no need to waste money on big PR push for the film since it's going to flop either way. Depp needs to start making smaller films again.

Box Office Mojo has it at $100 million. I've seen them report lower than others before, though. No clue where their (or anyone else) gets their numbers.

I won free tickets to see this, so I went yesterday.
It was alright. I thought Hall did ok, Depp kind of mailed it in.
Plot was all over the place though and I hated Kate Mara's character with the fury of a thousand suns

Johnny Depp has always been a boring actor to me. As the article said, Pirates of the Caribbean is all he will be remembered for as his iconic role as jack Sparrow. Besides that, he is just lame, and one dimensional. If the role he is playing isn't colorful and lacks character development, he's useless.

I sure am. Seems like way too much for the sci-fi thriller genre it's in. Nolan only got that sort of faith for Inception because he earned it through Batman. Though to be fair I just looked it up and it's only distributed by Warner Bros, the actual studio is Alcon Entertainment.
Rum Diary is a good film, but it also tanked.

Bill Murray was the better Hunter S Thompson. Johnny Depp is so unconvincing as a drug-user. He's too clean.
Thankfully for us, Marvel Studios is cheap, and they're not going to pursue an actor whose price tag is that high for the role.

I guess they thought it would be throwing good money after bad.
They give $150 million to everyone and their cat. $250 million is the new big budget.
Dead Man's Chest is more than worthy of a look. That movie is great.

This movie might be salvaged (sort of) by international gross, Johnny Depp still has a decent pull overseas. But what kind of studios gives a first time director that kind of budget for a non franchise movie? Seriously...
Honestly I don't think he gives a fuck anymore. And from a monetary point of view, Pirates certainly wasn't a mistake as it made him one of the highest paid actors in hollywood. His salary is insane most of the time. He hasn't been in a decent movie in a long long time, even his smaller stuff sucks (dear god the Rum Diary was just fucking awful).

He's been terrible for years. As has Tim Burton. Both of them should be forever thrown out of Hollywood and forced into Las Vegas night clubs off of the strip doing ventriloquism.
River died outside his (Depp's) club.
Despite that, Depp wasn't that into drugs. He was however a heavy, heavy alcoholic.

I wouldnt be so quick to write off Depp. He has talent and is only 50 which is still young by Hollywood standards. Dude cannot be faulted for raking in billions of dollars with the PotC franchise and any one of us would have done the same in his shoes. On Stranger Tides made 1 billion worldwide. Matthew McConaughey made gazillions playing the same old romantic archetype for a decade and then turned it around. His Tim Burton stuff is mostly a hit. Its sad that some of his movies bombed and Transcendence looked like it was a career destroyer from the start. Lesser known actors would have been done.
