US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

Like Pokemon? Can you expand on that?
I thought it was murder mystery rpg.

You collect personas to use in battles, that level up, and gain new abilities, which you choose what to replace, and also how you explore, travel, and interact in the world without spoiling. There is a ton of persona with numerous types. You can 'fuse' these personas to create new ones.

What's the cheapest that Castlevania SotN has been? Has it ever been less that $9.99? Just wondering if I should hold out for a sale for that game...

The only similarity to Pokemon it has is you get demons to fight for you. They each have their pros and con's but you fuse them with other demons to make better demons. The similarities stop there. Persona and shin megami tensei are extremely different when compared to Pokemon.

Yeah, I'm relying so much on muscle memory to replay MGS2. And the game is fairly fresh in my mind, as I've already got the HD collection on PS3.

It was only part way through last gen that Japanese devs embraced the standard Western dual stick controls. MGS2 was just one in a long line of games with workable by needlessly complex controls before twin stick finally took over.

MGS2 is lovely on the Vita, btw. A wonderful fit for the game.

It the second ever game to have an implementation of the rear touchscreen that it actually beneficial. Killzone's sniper zoom being the first. MGS usese it as the replacement for analogue shoulder buttons to tweak how much you lean/stand/crouch.

Do you find the controls enjoyable and easy on the Vita? I am going to get this game anyway for Vita as I'm a big fan of MGS and want to support it now that it's on sale. I missed the last sale being away. To be honest, I played MGS2 so much I'm not even going to play it but I really want MGS3.

P4G is a dating sim/dungeon crawling rpg, in a nutshell. It's got some good character development, an interesting plot, and some challenging content end-game and with NG+, but I wasn't as impressed as most of GAF was with it. Just didn't wow me as much as it did others. I can recommend it though.

I think it's really good, but have grown tired of the rinse-repeat dungeon structure. It comes off as expense saving more than anything else. I'd much prefer they take out some of the more meaningless "slice of life" stuff for better dungeons. Oh well, P5 I guess.

My main issue is actually that there is just too much time passing where nothing happens, it comes off as "paddy". I've played 80 hours and finally gotten Naoto on the team (taking several weeks to recover though, ugh), and it feels like I'm at best 2/3rds through the game. Hurry up please!

Still, it's good, and I think I'd disagree on the English dub. I can't imagine the situations being dubbed in Japanese helping the situation be less "cringe-worthy". It's camp either way, and you just gotta flow.

It works very well on the Vita, considering.

I miss the analogue face buttons on the PS2. I used to love the feeling of slowly releasing my thumb off the [] button to not fire a around. On the Vita, this is done by pressing down on the d-pad when you're already pressing []. So a workable solution.

The lack of L2/R2 is a bigger issue. To open up equipment or weapons (or quickly select/deselect), you have to use the front touch screen. That's fine. But to change equipment or weapon, you have to keep your finger held on the screen and scroll up/down. This is pretty fiddly, so not something you;d want to do in the heat of battle.

The small, sunken Select button the Vita is hard to quikly find, but that's no big deal really.

As for the rest, general controls are great. No issues there. Haven't found the analogue sticks too fiddly or sensitive, which was a complaints I'd seen made by others.

Out of curiosity, what is the opinion when comparing Tactics Ogre to the Fire Emblem series?

They're different games really. TO has far more depth. Of the handful of FE games I've played, once you have the basics down, the game becomes a breeze. There were a bunch of stages in TO which took serious thought about tactics and squad selection. In FE, my team would always be based on personal preference rather than strategical need.

I love FE to bits, and rate FE:Awakenings up there with TO:LUCT. But TO was the more affecting game to me, and I have no hesitation in saying it's the best SRPG game in the whole genre.

Hey guys what's the average playtime for Totori if I'm only planning on a single playthrough?
20 hours or so if you are just going for a random ending.
If you are planning on getting all the endings in a single playthrough, then 40-50 hours.

Yeah, by the umpteenth dungeon I was doing, I got really disenchanted with the game. It was a struggle near the end, which, regretfully, I haven't gotten to yet. Well, strike that. I "finished" it, but wanted to get the
True Ending (not sure if that's worth spoilering or not, but just in case)
so I kept on playing. Got to the final boss, lost, decided I didn't really want to do the dungeon over again or go grind for money to get more stuff to do more of the dungeon.. Meh. lol. I may go back one day and legit finish it but I'm happy with where I left it.

I'm sitting somewhere around that hour mark myself. The 'padding' you speak of didn't bother me too much. I was always using those days to go romance one of the team members or get peoples' personas leveled up just a bit more. It's an interesting mechanic - the clock counting down - that I've noticed in other Japanese-developed games as well. Like Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. I know there are a couple others I played that I noticed that in, but off the top of my head I can't recall.

And as for the English dub... Barf lol. Camp or not, Teddy, Chie, and Yukiko were just.. fucking.. BAD. lol >_< I'm a fan of Japanese dub because of my long-time interest in anime (i.e. Eng sub/Jap dub) so maybe that puts up a slight barrier.. But I don't mind English vo in other games. This one just sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Oh well lol. But hey, like you said, just gotta roll with it! :)

The main reason I'm going to go for it is because they're digital only and, unless I'm wrong, I don't think I've ever really seen them on sale. So it's probably the best time to give it a go

You convinced me. Dang it Gaf, I was just going to get Muramasa....ended up getting VS, CT,CC and Totori as well, massively overspent my budget >>

As someone who was so into anime that I used to subtitle it for various groups (AOne, A-Kingdom, Wannabe subs, Oyasumi subs, etc) I have to disagree... A lot of Japanese VO is just as bad as the English equivalents... it's just easier to swallow when a foreign language is full of camp/made up words unless you have a pretty deep understanding of the language.

There are a lot of Japanese folks who roll their eyes with some of the stuff these characters spout :) I know, I worked with them for the subtitling.

Bit of a rant but why can't Sony sell psn cards of 60 dollars or more? So fucking annoying having to top up 50 by 50. I thought the new paypal payment would alleviate this but they still cockblock other countries!

Can't you just get 3 $20 cards?

Every time I buy a card on amazon us it asks me for my card details and can only buy 1 card at a time card it costs me a transaction each time. Then sometimes I don't get the voucher code right away (probably cause my Visa card is euro) so it's already a pain in the ass as it is, buying $20 would just make it a nightmare.

I wish I could just dump $500 unto my PSN and be fucking done with it. Or let me put $100 at a time. Especially when you got so many deluxe editions of games that cost 70+ dollars. It's like Sony hates money or something.

They sell $10 cards in the US.

On the fence with Muramasa. Watched a bunch of review videos for the Wii version, and looks good but not that good. Of course it's way cheaper than buying the physical game so I feel like I'm nuts if I pass this up.

Muramasa owners, what are your thoughts on the game?

Just bought the following all at once:

Persona 4 Golden (Vita) Very excited about this one. Never played, but videos look great.
Metal Gear HD Collection (Vita)
Metal Gear HD Collection (PS3) Already played but can't resist for the price.
Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS3)
Child of Light (PS4)

It's a sad day when these crazy sales come around and you own everything already. :(

I did pick up Tactics Ogre and Vagrant Story, though; we'll probably never see them on sale again and I'm quite excited to play both of them.

I wished Toukiden was part of this sale. The only reason I haven't bought it yet is I already have too big of a backlog (bought danganronpa right after it's release, only played through the first trial. No time to play since!) but I really enjoyed the demo.

This was my huge gripe with Persona 3 that I thought P4 handled brilliantly. I'm a sucker for themed-dungeons though, even if, just below the surface, they're all the same.

I believe it's been on sale before. It was also free for PS+ a while back.

Army Corps of Hell is on sale for $8.. is it worth it? I'm expecting a Pikmin clone with some cool gothic japanese art and metal music.

I just want it to use native resolution and be technically sound.

You're killing me guys! I still need to know!

It's good but it takes some hours for it to start, Chapter 0 and 1 were too easy and then Chapter 2 kicks in and the story/combat gets interesting.

It's a good game but you have to know what you're getting into, so go watch a trailer.

I'm playing the HyperD Nep series (on HDN mk2 atm), and I'd say get it. Check the gameplay on youtube though to see if it's something to your taste. I feel like Victory may be the best of the series atm and I haven't started it yet.

If I download the game from the PSP store can I transfer the install over to the PS3? Or do I have to install it seperetely for ps3?

it's boring as fuck. the amount of just running around empty screens and an occasional mob fight with kinda well done boss fights isn't for me

Everyone else loves it tho. You might love it too. More than I did I guess.

OK, I bought:

a) Tales of Symphonia Chronicles

b) MGS HD collection VITA (even though I have the physical version)

c) Muramasa Vita

I am thinking of adding $30.00 for Ys and Dragon Ball Z Vita.

Gaf, why is Ys for Vita awesome and how well DBZ plays on Vita?

Only got Symphonia Chronicles so far.

Kind of tempted in getting MGS HD Collection on Vita, Vagrant Story, and Tactics Ogre. Just not sure I want to spend the money.

Also kind of tempted to buy the DBZ game just because it looks like a 3D version of DBZ Legends on PS1 which I thought was pretty fun back in the day.

Incredible game, loved every minute of it. The running back and forth can get a little repetitive but I like the fighting system and it looks amazing on Vita.

On the fence about:

Persona 4 Golden: Played a bit of Persona 3 on the PSP and found it decent, but not great. Curious about P4G due to the love it gets around here.

Metal Gear Solid Collection: The one and only MGS I've ever played was the PS original. Liked it back then.

Chrono Trigger / Cross: Never played either, but again, curious due to word of mouth. Is one better than the other?

Thanks for any guidance.

Trigger is generally held to be better than Cross but supposedly vastly different types of games

I've only ever played trigger and it's amazing but the PS1 version that's playable on PSP/PSV has loading issues that occurred in the PS1 version and some consider it unplayable due to that

So I don't think I really got an answer on my whole Atelier dilemma, so I ended up buying ALL OF THEM. My haul totaled to $125 and I'm not exactly sure what kind of crazy is going on. Weirdly enough I'm debating on buying more from this sale, heh.

Been stalking Ys: Memories of Celceta on Amazon for awhile, hoping for a sale. Haven't played a previous Ys game since Ys III on SNES, and I understand this is a VERY different game. However, any full-retail Vita game with a Metacritic rating above 80 hits my radar. Love that system, and I want to try anything considered "good" on it. $20 seems worth it to try out in hopes of quality.

Also very happy to get the DMC Collection for only $8. I know it's been hovering in the $15-20 range for awhile, but that seemed too much for something I PROBABLY won't take the time to play, despite having never touched DMC3.

Damn, trooper.

If you have good taste then don't worry, you didn't waste money.

Picked up MGS vita and persona. Never played a game from either series so I'm excited to finally try them out.

I think I'm going to pick up the original MGS just so I can follow it all a little better. As for persona, I'm excited to try it out. It gets so much love but it's not really my type of game. I don't really play rpg's or games with its look and setting. Hopefully it can win me over and open me up to those types of games. Figured I'd try them out since they are all so cheap. Here goes nothing.

On the fence about:

Chrono Trigger / Cross: Never played either, but again, curious due to word of mouth. Is one better than the other?

I think Trigger is a better game (and one of the finest RPGs ever made) but Cross is still very, very good. The PS1 port of Trigger is terrible though and that wouldn't be my recommended method of playing the game.

Video game golf is one of my favorite sports games and translates well to the medium. In real like it is an incredibly boring sport...and frustrating as hell to actually play.

I could agree with you, although if I had the time to play golf I would. It's one of those sports that require patience.

Persona 4 is worth the $15 dollars simply because the high it gives you is amazing for however long it lasts.

If you enjoyed MGS then you'll probably enjoy the collection.

Play Trigger on something else, then go onto Cross.

I can't decide whether to buy P4G or MGSHD on PS3. I only want one, because I'm not going to have time to even play the one I get for a while.

I'm a huge MGS fan, but I never did play PW, and I'd love to replay the rest too. But the P4G word of mouth has been so nuts for so long, I feel like I'd really enjoy playing it before bed with earbuds.

There is no comparison between the watered down port of Persona 3 that PSP got, and the definitive version of persona 4. If you enjoyed P3P even a little bit, P4G will be more than worth it for $15.

If you liked MGS1, you'll like Collections. Both MGS2 and 3 are rather meaty and for less than a tenner, are a great value.

Trigger or Cross? If it was any other platform I'd tell you get Trigger. While Cross is a great game, there is far less controversy over "how good of a game" trigger is. Get Cross from this sale. While there are links to the first game, it's not so substantial that it'll render your enjoyment of the game bad.

P4G will be a sleep ruiner if you play the way you're suggesting. And it's by no means a short game so you're looking at a lot of lost sleep :)

I've always wanted to get into the series. Even moreso after seeing the relatively small fanbase describing all the ways it is awesome.

So I figured, go big or go home.
that's what she said, etc etc.

I'm determined to start this, so I'm jumping in this weekend. Totori first?

P4G. You can buy peacewalker seperately for the psp and just load that onto your vita. Once you map the camera controls to the right analog, it plays just as well and its portable.

Enjoy! Totori first and I hope you love it. More people loving Atelier is a good thing. You aren't kidding with the small fanbase; the latest Atelier's OT is only 11 pages long :(

I'd start Totori+ already (and I should after waiting so long for a sale) but I played the original ages ago so no rush.
