DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

the blue light isnt so bad, but the white one is a god damn flashlight. it's ridiculous.
 
My DS4s have been relatively fine since launch, then one started to flake mildly mid-way through Thief due to lockpicking, and now both are flaking quite a bit from Trials. Pretty disappointing, will have to send them in.

My controller started doing that after 2 days of use on infamous ss..if it goes wrong i'll just send it back to sony as i have only had the console for a month
 
I had a problem with my left stick called Sony gave me a return address sent it in and got a brand new one in 5 days. Just had to pay for shipping to them. $10.
 
The rubber peeling happened to my controller before I even got my ps4. I was using the Dual shock 4 on my ps3 for about a week but I slowed down on using it, I barely play my ps4 now. And I have the controller that came with the system still unused. I'm just going to wait for the new colors, hopefully around E3 time. And I hope their build quality is better than the original.

So far so good, and definitely seems to be a significant battery life improvement. I used my controller that had a creaking left palm rest as the guinea pig, and now it doesn't creak anymore, so maybe tightening the screws fixed it or something about the slightly larger battery inside.

It does not fit in the battery plate as it is slightly bigger than the original. However, I sat it roughly on the same spot and closed the thing up without securing it via tape or anything, and it doesn't seem to be loose at all or anything within the controller.

Main things to watch out for if you do this upgrade - 1) try not to let the triggers come off when removing the back plate, as you may lose a spring this way. They are tiny and easy to lose. There are plenty of vids on YouTube about this already. 2) There's a little rubber stand that sits on a part of the battery plate that's also easy to lose (and can take a few minutes to figure out where it goes if it does come off and you've never seen the innards before). 3) The battery cables are longer than what is present on the original battery. Take care not to get them caught between the front and back plates when reassembling your DS4.
 
Is it me or are the new controllers slightly different ? My replacement DS4 has matte Square, Triangle , Circle and O buttons , whereas my original controller had glossy buttons, IIRC.

Think you might be misremembering. My DS4 that was in the box with my launch system has matte buttons. The new controller I just bought yesterday seems to have a slightly different texture on the sticks but that's it.
 
So one of my DS4 analog sticks started peeling open yesterday. No idea if it was one that came with the system or one that I bought back around Christmas. I have an extended warranty with Sony on the system, but either way it should be covered for repair/replacement, right? I'm in Canada by the way.
 
There is a PS4 demo station at game and both the DS4 controllers have worn out rubber plastic coming off analogue sticks it looks disgusting i have never seen any controller do that never.
 
One of mine is fine, but on the other the left stick has a slight tear in the rubber and it's starting to peel a little. Also it just feels uncomfortable under the humble - like it constantly has little particles on it. Both were in my killzone bundle box, so it's a bit odd that only one is showing an issue (both get pretty even use)

Still,will wait for it to get really bad and then get a replacement from Sony. European warranties ftw
 
So I just got off a chat with a Sony tech support rep, and apparently customers are in charge of shipping busted controllers to Sony for repair and have to pay for the shipping costs? Is this the case with people in the States/Europe as well?

I'm looking at a minimum $15 shipping cost to ship this controller half way around the world for something that seems to be a very common problem. Am I getting this right?
 
I just realized my left joystick is peeling off now too. This likely just happened today since I didn't notice it earlier. The part that's peeling feels way softer than I was expecting. No wonder it peels/flakes so easily.

edit: I ordered some thumb grips just now because of this. I should have done that earlier.

Which country? In Canada I just had to ship it to their warehouse in Whitby, ON. Was about 3-4 days turnaround.
 
Two perfect Dual Shock 4 (I swap to charge battery)... played over 500 hours already (over 100 hours just with Warframe)... no issue.

Edit - I noticed my launch DS4 (bought in November) and my new DS4 (bought in February) have different material in the sticks.

- very easy to install, just need a small phillips head.
- they don't get slick when used after after a long session
- these are longer than the DS4 sticks so they feel looser
- the textured sides are a nice touch
- the diameter is smaller so that might be considered a downside

I tried to put a pair in my 360 controller but the dome too small, it hits the analog box. since I have extras I might experiment with the Dremel.
 
Doh...noticed a tiny chip in my left stick last night. Tore off the loose piece and you can't really tell anymore but its gotten me paranoid now.

thanks for the impressions. i'm interested in doing this but worried that the xbox sticks are too small (already have an issue with my thumbs feeling like they are slipping when doing things like sprinting in fpses (i.e. pressing down the thumbsticks) and that the increased stick height will be uncomfortable.

they seem to work perfectly fine so far, no slowturn/drifting and as for the range some guy already did a measurement with a micrometer.I did receive a reply on reddit about the deadzone and how it would grow due to the length of the sticks, he figured the Xbone sticks are about 4mm taller and would increase the size of the DZ but so far I haven't noticed.

I think the slipping is due to the material used the DS4 stick construction because I got that too after playing for a bit on the old sticks.

this seller also has bulk DS4 sticks too

I just did this yesterday. I managed to screw up my LED so I have no light anymore, but it's not that big of a deal. I have the xbox one sticks coming, and i'll see if i can figure out what happened to the light when i put those in.
 
Has Sony addressed this at all in their production process? Is this still a problem if you would buy a new PS4 and/or a DS4?
The controllers on some demo stations look horrible...

They actually gave me a 40% refund ($160) and let me keep the controller - and my controller didn't even have an issue. I merely told them about my concern and asked about their policy. Incredible service.

I have a launch DS4 and a February DS4... they have different material on sticks but neither of them have any issue yet.

you have two ribbons in the controller, one for USB and on for the light bar. did you remember to put both back in when you reassembled?

it's possible to turn on the controller when it's all opened up so you can check the light when you open it next time.

Probably just a loose cable. Hopefully it wasn't ripped out or anything that would require soldering.

I did. And I had it open testing it, but could never get the light to come on fiddling with the cables. I'll try again when I tear it apart... some time at the end of may to the middle of June based on shipping estimate... I probably just ruined the ribbon cable.

It also looks like my controller won't charge now, unless the battery symbol doesn't strobe when on the screen that comes up after holding down the ps4 button since 1.70.
 
I went to Bic Camera in Ginza and got to try a PS4 for the first time. They had two PS4s, each with one controller attached and each was missing the left thumb stick. Apparently this is a problem even in Japan which is surprising since I would've bet they would have been a different batch since it launched so late over here.

They ought to just make the stick a single piece instead of the composite of base and textured rubber coating as the stick-top design leaves a bubble or at least the potential for one to form in the top to allow the coating material to then move and flex, stretching it apart at the seams and thinner edges.
