I can already imagine the pvp battles

Lmao day 1

Not sure how rifles would be much different than using a heavy crossbow from a balance perspective. Or it acts like bows if you allow ADS and require both hands. Nothing game breaking in a series that already has ranged magic, one handed large crossbows, and sniping bow attacks.

i don't see it as a problem for singleplayer as the BEASTS can just eat some shots and nobody will have to worry about lag. PvP would be weird though depending on how much damage they do, how much ammo players have, and how fast they are.

If there is any PvP.

And if there actually are any guns.

And if this game still exists in the form these rumors present.

Just depends on implementation and what kind of guns they are. Shotguns are a rather new weapon though, with the Blunderbuss being historical predecessor (which is also a pretty new weapon - 1750s onward are where historically known shotgun-type weapons began).

Haha, yeah.

Crossbows and Bows were pretty easy to dodge in pvp, not so sure how guns would work out in that scenario. They would need to make sure the damage output isn't that big and the reload animations take some time.

Magic was overpowered in all Souls games but at least you could see the opponent readying his catalyst, and you could actually see the spell flying towards you so you could time your roll. If there are weapons in the game the shot should hit you almost instantaneously, making dodging more difficult. You would have to predict your opponents moves beforehand. Add server lag to the equation and I'm not sure if guns wouldn't break the game.

All this assuming that it really is a shotgun, of course.

They can keep damage within a small range like most fps game do to shotguns and have a sound before the gun goes off.( like the sound of the wheellock/ flinklock mechanism) so you can time a proper roll etc.

Cool pistol from 1540s made for Emperor Charles V.

Good point. An audio cue could help a lot in this case.

Well, it's possible the game may not even have rolling (Shadow Tower Abyss, the only other precedent for guns, didn't have rolling). Again, it's hard to even get a lot of specifics on the mechanics. About the best discussion you can have is just on historical placement of all of this stuff and its relevance (potentially).

You... understand that forum poster hype counts for approximately jack shit in the actual sales performance of a game, right?

That's fundamentally what drives this narrative of controlled leaks, I guess: forum posters thinking that as clearly the most important customers, a publisher's top priority is to ensure that they have a steady stream of "hype." In reality the publishers' priority is getting a ton of more casual buyers, who are hugely influenced by the media but almost not at all by forum hype, to be aware of the game and interested in picking it up.

You basically have to drill down to the type of ultra-niche, 50k-or-less games that only forum posters really pick up before this equation changes, and Souls is way bigger than that these days.

I guess that's why we never see social marketing agency types or MS executives around here managing the message. Oh wait...

I'm curious if this is linked to DeSouls or it's own universe and if we're going back to Boletaria, in the future, or the past. The old one wasn't really killed off and it was said that he had already been awakened once so it is feasible that this could be a prequel or sequel.

This game is in third person, not first. It's almost a certainty there will be dodging, since there appears to be melee as well.

Could still be balanced by having a LONG reload timer between individual shots and making it a "stand still for a second and not get hit at all to maintain concentration" type of thing.

Not sure what you're basing this on. We have screenshots (maybe? they could just FMVs or something else) and no information. Also the King's Field series is something they're famous for and stating that them going back to that style as an impossibility is silly.

They are famous for Armored Core and Dark Souls. They are not taking away 3rd Person mechanics established in the Souls games for First Person King's Field mechanics. The leaked images even a show a 3rd Person perspective.

Only in pvp. I never fired a 17th century weapon before, but I guess the projectile would be faster than an arrow

It would, but the arrow fired from crossbows in game is hardly as fast as it should be in real life. We're talking about something that can pierce through plate easily.

I'm imagining guns will be single shot, have slow reload, will be fast, good base damage, low requirements, but really crappy scaling, and will be able to aim like you can with bows.

Are people seriously concerned guns will be crazy good?

When's the last time you did a crossbow only run through in Dark Souls?

Crazy good for invasions/PvP is about the only concern being shown. Crossbow projectiles move slower and can be dodged.

Will most likely be balanced just fine for PvE content with a long reload timer or something.

For all we know, the Beast Souls title we've been joking about could be literal and PvP would see players becoming beasts in a sort of Left 4 Dead PvP where it's player characters vs. player beasts, and this whole "How does gun work" topic will be irrelevant.

Or, again, maybe there won't be any PvP and this will be a significant change from the structure of the Souls games in order to really set it apart.

Is "Project Beast" Another "Souls" Successor By FromSoft?
BY STEVE HASKE | MAY 3, 2014 | 9:57 AM

Screens of the so-called Project Beast surfaced online yesterday via Neogaf, depicting a very Soulsian world of wrought-iron portcullis, ragged-armored warriors and mangy dogs, not to mention a character going through what looks like a very nicely-rendered gate of swirling white fog.

Though little is known about the game (which hasn't even been announced in any sort of official capacity despite the presence of a Project Beast logo screen among the shots posted), there was a rumor around PS4's launch that From Software might be showing off Demon's Souls 2 or some sort of spiritual successor. The news of the alleged Project Beast also comes just days after the developer was bought by Kadokawa Games.

Wasn't aware of From Software being bought out by Kadokawa Games recently ^

"With a new system, from this point on, I believe we'll be able to make newer and more in depth games," FromSoft head Naotoshi Zin said at the time. (Interestingly, From also said that Dark Souls II's engine had been built from the ground up for next-gen not long after its reveal.)

Is Project Beast real? Most likely. Leaks within the industry rarely prove inaccurate when accompanied by screens, and these screens definitely have the certain Souls vibe that's come to define the art direction of the series.

Yeahp. We pretty much know nothing. We know whatever's being created is probably from From Software. Though we could all just end up being trolled by some jack-off on 4chan who pasted a logo over some other project. Amongst many other possibilities...

Guns aren't a bad addition. As has been pointed out, they had them pretty early, when people were still wearing armor. There are even some examples of early guns built into swords (sort of like Squall's Gunblade lol). So I don't see how this invalidates the fantasy setting at all (it's maybe not medieval but still fits pretty well).

Armor even had a "proof mark" (meaning bullet proof) to ensure it could withstand a bullet. See the lower left belly in this example.

And this could add a whole new level to shields, too:

WOW this is incredible. This stuff really didn't start with anime. Look at the craftsmanship. And all done by hand..Stunning. Not just the gunblades, but the variety of trick blades that look straight out of Dark Souls or any crazy take-your-pick anime/game.
Googled some more. This is brilliant. Even more so knowing they didn't use computer programs to make prototypes, simulation, and then have robots with lasers cut and carve the weapon into existance.

Anyway, I'm excited about this game. If it is indeed Miyazaki doing another Demon Souls type of game, I hope gunplay is limited. If it was intended for E3 reveal, I think total silence from Sony until then would be best for building hype. A teasy leak like this can build excitement on its own. Plenty of time to have this seed sprout into a mighty oak at E3. Cheers to high expectations and no letdowns!

I feel the exact same. Yes it's been leaked but the anticipation to see if this is actually real and see the trailer running can reach fever pitch. In fact I already can't wait till E3!

Cool stuff like this makes me bummed that things like the History channel have become a shell of their former selves and are no longer about history. Would love to watch a special about ancient gun+melee weapons. And if shit like this is in this game it would be pretty awesome.

The original leak that said the trailer showed Japan Studio's logo.

Ok. Now this is the bit of info that makes me believe which I didn't know about.

I thought SJS logo was in the pics. This morning I went through them again and realised it was only From's. So then I started wondering if the exclusivity assumption was only based off rumours.

That makes it much more concrete.

Cool, I wasn't aware they made gun axes and gun cutlery! That's crazy.
But yeah, I doubt gunplay will be the focus. If they go the historically accurate route, most of these weapons could only fire a single round before reloading, so as some have speculated it may be a bit like crossbows with even more time spent reloading.

The earliest known firearms were created in 13th century China. As I stated before, having firearms won't change the dynamics or gameplay much at all. Castles, dungeons, boats and Warfs, and the like won't just all the sudden vanish because of the inclusion of gun powder. And won't change gameplay because we have been shooting arrows from Bows and Crossbows, and magic homing bullets for three games, now.

The inclusion of a shotgun doesn't mean Exoskeletons and Mechs are next.

Yup, the inclusions of early guns like flintlock rifles are a great fit and won't change the world setting into the modern era.

Dude it totally changes that. Having guns would completely invalidate a high fantasy setting. Those two things just don't mesh. A shotgun in particular changes it even more.

Does this look like a high fantasy setting? I'd understand if there were laser guns in this type of setting, but a shotgun isn't a big deal. Other fantasy games use guns. Look at FF XII for one with its guns and airships.

I don't see why Souls has to stick with its current setting either. Branching out means new ideas.

They could make it so there's a slight delay between pressing attack and the character actually firing the gun during which the lock-on stops tracking. Accompanied by an audio cue, this could give an approaching player a reasonable chance of getting out of the way.

Honestly after the backlash against DS2's reliance on big knights, you'd think a few new ideas would be something to cheer.

Personally, I was sort of hoping the next DS-like game would take place in ancient Japan.

Whatever weapon they include, it's always about balance.

If it takes 70 frames to reload and you only have 2 shots who do medium damage, you'll die pretty quickly if you're not careful.

he walked around

fought enemies

i can describe a giant mindflayer type enemy

a character placing a shining magic sword into a pedestal at the base of a statue

a huge pyromancy fireball

shotguns

there was text "This is a nightmare."

I had to google what a mindflayer was and got this:

Mind_flayer.jpg

which immediately reminded me of these from Demon's Souls:

mind-flayer.jpg

hype!

I hated those things ;_;

I didn't know what a mindflayer was either, that's really interesting. I need the full video so much.

Are we gonna reach OT2 for this rumor before E3? lol

So the game will have flying mind flayers? Damn if those things weren't nasty enough but they really made tower of Latria interesting. Every encounter made me run like a bitch lol.

Has the Giantbomb group speak out on this yet?

Someone said earlier that it seems like the big websites and media have gone silent. Idk if its just NDA at this point or something else
