I could see this working. And even just the idea of a tree-like designed world suit From.

Souls playthroughs usually feel half difficult, half easy anyway - the shift happening somewhere in the mid-point where you upgrade your gear enough.

I'm picturing it something like this, with the "hot" colors being more difficult.

I deserve to be on that train too. I possess the platinum for Demon's, mmkay.

"Space Souls" doesn't mean astronauts and rocket ships on the moon though, it isn't Destiny - it means A.I. run dystopian cybernetic apocalypse, which has bucketloads of synchronicity with Souls Series.

My soul wont rest in peace until this becomes a reality.

Nothing about what you just said actually has anything to do with space and you can't just say it has "synchronicity" with Souls when the two things essentially have nothing in common. Souls takes place in a fantasy world where people are using steel and magic and everything that comes with that while Cyberpunk is pretty much the polar opposite in terms of tone and atmosphere. There's a huge difference between a sci fi game that's somewhat inspired by souls and this weird vague idea of "space souls" people keep talking about. Where is everyone who should be trying to hype up "Fantasy Halo" and "Renaissance Era Dead Space" under this weird logic people are applying to Souls? You can't just keep throwing random things together, describe a totally different idea explored in a manga and go "See, it's Space Sooouuuls!"

Gritty dark fantasy and cyberpunk are both cynical settings with plenty in common. Abuse of magic/technology, pessimism about human nature, once-livable worlds turned not-so-liveable by runaway ambition, heroes desperately struggling against a world gone mad, deep-rooted conspiracies orchestrated by powerful evil entities... I agree that you can't just say "Space Souls!" and you'd have to pay close attention to each element to make that everything fits together, but it's not an impossible combination of ideas. As the above Gantz pictures demonstrate, sci-fi, or more accurately science-fantasy, can also provide as much weirdness as you could ever need.

An oppressive atmosphere, action-RPG gameplay with customizable gear and stats, not-entirely-linear progression, dropping your XP/money equivalent upon death, "heavy" combat, and seamless multiplayer are all crucial elements of the Souls series that aren't that strongly tied to its setting. They're not so dependent on the context provided by the series that you could never use them anywhere else. From Software have already demonstrated this with Shadow Tower, which borrowed many mechanical elements from King's Field and put them in more of a surreal setting that had alien creatures and firearms.

a Souls + System Shock game would be amazing.

These are two stellar ideas. I love the creativity from Souls fans. One thing I'm looking forward to for PB is the change in setting. We really need something new.

Fuck it...

Add me to the train!

With so many on board I just hope we are able to ride successully to our destination...

I don't think I'll be able to take it gently if it turns out to be false.

I think people are talking about taking elements of the Souls games that aren't specifically tied to the setting and applying it to sci-fi horror. Things like finely tuned and deliberate combat mechanics, minimalist story telling and an atmosphere of isolation, dread and decay. Cyberpunk and dark fantasy tend not to be all that far removed from each other in terms of tone and atmosphere, it's usually just a matter of scale and the differences between magic and technology are often superficial with regards to their narrative utility.

It also needs a grappling class

I like that idea. I can picture myself bodyslamming fucking giant knights and shit.

If a "Space Souls" doesn't happen anytime soon, I throw my name in the bucket for a fan project with that idea, or a Kickstarter project.

As designer, of course.

I wont be able to take the setting, tone and atmosphere seriously if I can body-slam foes.

Sony made the right choice throwing money at FromSoft instead of a Platinum game. FromSoft Soul games actually sell especially now that's it's exploded in popularity. Platinum games as usual would bomb unless there's a strong IP behind it. MS and Nintendo may have money hated exclusive games from Platinum but will it move consoles? lol no.

GG Sony.

I'd imagine that Sony was kicking themselves for treating Demon's Souls like dirt then.

Man what has this thread evolved into? I feel lost. Did some new revelations surface or is speculation just getting out of control??

Please have a masterfully interconnected world à la Dark Souls 1. And zero warping from the beginning of the journey (if at all).

Hey look the convert is here haha I still remember your thread where you were giving the game a chance and wound up loving it.

I'm fine with that. Being this will most likely have no conection to Dark Souls (other than Easter Eggs/Lore stuff), I'm sure that won't even be an issue. Same or the connected world (Miyazaki's back!).

Quick question.

Demon's Souls (PS3 only right?)
Dark Souls (Multi)
Dark Souls 2 (Multi)
Project Beast (PS4)

correct?

Probably already answered but, does this game have anything to do with Demon's Souls and the Dark Souls series. What is the common factor here and what isn't?

I mean this in terms of development of course. IP ownership, game mechanics etc.

Thanks guys/gals.

Aesthetically it looks similar, but we don't know anything beyond that yet. It's extremely likely, however, that this is being made by the same team responsible for Demons Souls and the first Dark Souls. Both of those games were directed by Hidetaki Miyazaki, who is also probably directing this.

As far as the people working on it goes, Dark Souls 2 is the black sheep, being developed by a different team at FromSoft.

Sony owns Demon's. I believe From and Bamco co-own Dark Souls and it's sequel (although the IPO only shows the latter's name), and the likelihood is that if this is another co-development between From and Sony that Sony will own the IP.

Also, the reason Dark Souls exists as opposed to Demon's Souls 2 is because Sony passed up the chance to publish Demon's (didn't have much faith in it before release and Atlus/Namco published in North America/Europe) and Namco stepped in with a partnership for From. Shuhei Yoshida has many times stated his love for the Souls series and that he knows passing on it was a mistake. I think this all lends the idea of From & Sony working together again a lot of credence.

Demon's Souls has always and still is PS3 exclusive.

The fog gate picture heavily implies that it is a Souls game. And the fact that the last time From and SCEJ teamed up Demon's Souls was created.

If its exclusive to the PS4 and co-developed by SCEJ then the IP will be owned by Sony. Who knows about the game mechanics, I'm sure we'll know at E3

Dark Souls is basically a expanded sequel to Demon's Souls. The only change they had to make was the name. Sony didn't show any support for the game because they thought it was not going to sell well. Shuhei Yoshida went as far as saying, "'This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game." after playing a near final version of the game for a small amount of time.

After Atlus published the game and Dark Souls was a huge success they expressed regret in not seeing the value at the beginning.

Dark Souls was more than a name change.

Demon's Souls was a hub world, whereas Dark Souls is open world

Demon's Souls used grass as the healing option whereas Dark Souls had the estus flask

Demon's Souls had the Nexus whereas Dark Souls had bonfires

Demon's Souls had world tendency events

There was plenty room for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls to coexist
