Saw it today. Maybe its cause I saw it for free but I ended up liking it. The movie had a lot of bad, cringeworthy shit in it(Electro, German scientist, bad pacing, too many subplots, that scene with the terrible licensed music) but all the Spider-Man scenes were perfect. By far the best he's been depicted in film. There was also some good moments throughout and the acting from Garfied and Emma was great. Dane Dehaan did a decent job too. Gwen Stacys death was handled well which was something i was worried about. They should have saved the sinister six set up stuff at the end for an after credits scene or the next movie but I didn't mind it too much. Also if there's one thing I've learned from watching the movie, it's to never see a trailer for any Spider-Man movie in the future. They practically spoiled everything in the movie and I might have ended up enjoying it a bit more if I didn't see everything coming. Overall it's nowhere near as good as Spider-Man 2 but it was alright on it's own.

So the bell could toll when it was time for Gwen to die. Stop asking questions.

Hah. These are questions the people making the movie should've asked themselves.

Edit:

I've seen baffling post credits scenes before but the X-Men one they threw at me here probably takes the cake. I realize it was just a commercial but it was even bad at being that. I had no clue what was happening.

A friend of mine wanted to see this tonight. He had a bad week, and he didn't want to go alone so I tagged along. I never saw the first one (I will fix that this week, as he let me borrow the blu), but I knew the major plot points.

Even still, the movie was a complete mess. There were bits that I liked. The webslinging in particular looked great, and I really liked Garfield and Stone together. Those two deserved better than this movie.

The rest was just a complete mess. Just when the movie seemed focused on developing one story, it cuts away to another undercooked story, and then keeps doing that until the end. In that respect, it was a lot like Spider-Man 3.

In the end, I really just didn't give a shit about anything going on because nothing was developed well. And really, who gives a shit about Peter's parents? Ugh.

Oh, and the X-Men credits scene was baffling. I knew it would be there and why, but even still it was confusing.

You often see tv shows or movies where a character has a 'wall of obsession' with photos and things taped up. And you think, "This would never happen in real life."

This movie had two of those characters: Max's wall for Spider-Man and Peter's wall for his father.

Also, the music playing while Peter made his wall of insanity was bad, but the "Do I have to lose you too?" note to himself about Gwen was actually worse.

Probably one of the worst scenes in the movie. I laughed out loud in the theater, that was so bad.

why did harry all of a sudden start cackling and licking his lips? it was because his name was 'green goblin' in the comics, right?

I guess he was driven insane, but it's not portrayed well at all. It's a shame cause DeHaan was probably the best part of the movie, and then him cackling and everything just comes out of nowhere. Him causing Gwen's death was good, but the weird depiction of him doing classic Goblin was silly. I wanted his madness represented differently, somehow.

I did really like everything about Harry Osborne up to that point, I liked him injecting himself and then crawling to the prototype battle suit. I'm hyped for Sinister Six.

Yup

Still not quite sold on his actual makeup, though I understand they need the dude to emote.

Just came from the movie and there was a pretty audible gasp in the audience when Gwen died. Guess not many people read the comics. I do like how they made Electro feel like a legitimate threat in the movie. Can't wait for Sinister Six.

I've found the movie to be mostly awful with only a few redeeming qualities and scenes within it.

First off, the father subplot was completely unnecessary and only served the purpose of giving some contrived reason as to why the spider venom didn't work on anyone else. It didn't add to any of the themes or relationships already in the movie and just ate up so much of the runtime that could have been focused either on Harry and Peter's relationship, Gwen, or hell even Electro. The first scene was sort of interesting as I thought there might have been some sort of larger corporate intrigue angle but there really wasn't and it's just a shitty way of adding another action sequence into the film.

Harry and Peter's relationship should have been the heart of the film. Peter's decision to withhold his blood from Harry for some bullshit reason (that is somewhat later justified in the film unbeknowest to Peter at the time he made his decision) is the driving force for Harry to become the Goblin. So instead of spending a lot of time focusing on their relationship, they get a couple of scenes, one of which serves as a backstory dump for their relationship. So what we're left with is a long friendship on paper but nothing the audience is invested with and so the level of betrayal that Harry feels at the end is completely undermined. This is a real problem as the fight between the Goblin and Spider-Man is supposed to be the real climax of the film but it sort of feels tacked on.

Then there is Electro. Worst villain I've seen in a comic book film in a long long fucking time. They spend so much time and effort demasculating Max before he becomes Electro, that once he does, he's never threatening or intimidating. They also play up the 'hyuk hyuk nerd' trope so much that I found it stupid. It's corny in all the wrong ways. Once he does become a villain, his reasoning for killing Spider-Man again feels contrived as fuck. Any sort of sympathy I had for him earlier on is out the window and all I'm left with is a lunatic who likes yelling and killing people. Don't forget the fact that he's out of the film for a good chunk of it until the grand finale where he loses like a simp after he gets knocked out by Gwen driving a car. They should have cut his entire character out of the film and focused it more on Harry.

The Peter/Gwen relationship drama was fucking awful on a writing and directorial level but it worked out okay because of the chemistry between Garfield and Stone. So much of the shit is cheesy in the same way that roof sequence was in ASM1. They already had enough material to work with before adding the stuff about Gwen going to England. I should also mention the bit about Gwen looking up Max and being chased through Oscorp was another complete waste of time. Peter deciding to go with Gwen to England was a huge death flag for Gwen and really telegraphed that they were going to kill her off. Peter also did a shitty job explaining to Gwen that he promised her dying father to keep her safe and stay away. The movie does this bullshit thing of trying to morally justify Peter staying with Gwen by Gwen repeatedly saying it's her choice but it wasn't. It was Peter's responsibility to keep his promise and to stay away. The film does show that Peter feels guilty (through the fucking hilarious Denis Leary frowning face) but it doesn't go all the way and point out that Peter is guilty.

The finale action sequences were short as fuck. The damn trailers spoiled pretty much the entire bits. Jesus Christ. I found both the 2nd round with Electro and the Goblin fight to be highly unsatisfying. The Electro fight had the potential to be so much more than what we got and the Goblin fight was just boring and short. Peter also should have been way more fucked up from his fight with Electro. They tried some bullshit handwaving movie magic about his suit being rubber but it wasn't believable at all. The amount of electricity that Electro was pumping out should have jacked him up a lot more than what was visually represented.

So at first I thought the OST was fantastic but then I realized it was mainly the theme and the rest of the OST is garbage. Fucking dubstep? Really? There wasn't a single notable song other than the theme and the rest bordered between awful and offensive.

I will say this, I do think everyone was appropriately casted for their material other than possibly Giamatti, who I don't know because his material is so awful and one note. Garfield does a great job with the material that he has and does nail the crying sequence after Gwen dies. DeHaan though knocked his stuff out of the park for the most part until the Goblin bits where it just becomes too much. DeHaan worked much better as a villain than Foxx did, who was boring as fuck as Electro. The bit where he comes back to Oscorp with Foxx was probably the best bit in the film. I think the acting did a lot to cover up for how poor the writing was.

I give the film a denislearydisapprovingfrownface.webm/10

Why was there a clock tower at the power plant?

The clock tower was probably there long before the power plant. I imagine OSCORP bought the land and put up their power plant there and just let the clock tower stay. Why does it matter? In big cities there is conflicting architecture everywhere.

Another odd thing about Harry Osborn is that his selection of the Green Goblin gear was random. "Randumb". Basically, he could've just as easily been Vulture or Doctor Octopus, but he was closest to the glider.
He went to the regenerative suit which was attached to the glider. That made sense to me.

I thought it was to add more suspense to the Electro and Spidey fight. Can Spider-Man turn the power on in time!? Or maybe to add scale to the third act? I thought it was out of place lol.
If you're adding a ticking clock for tension you should make the main character aware of it. It's more effective that way.

Forgot to mention the airplane bit. Absolutely stupid on every conceivable level.

Thanks for reminding me about how much a waste that scene of Gwen being chased through Oscorp was. It wasn't bad itself, but went on for far too long. One of the many scenes that did.

No lie, I actually really fucking love Electro's theme. The booming audio gave him such a magnificent, powerful presence on screen every time he arrived. He felt overwhelmingly powerful, at least to me.

Made me feel a kind of "woah..." every time he showed up and started doing his thing.

I agree... Honestly I just didn't like Peter at ALL in this movie. I felt more sympathy for Harry and Max then Peter. Peter was just a little whining baby who doesn't know how to deal with stress.

Just like ASM I enjoyed the movie. It's way closer to the source material than anything Raimi did, but more importantly, Garfield makes a great Spiderman. He cracks jokes, acts like spidey and is just funny.

I mean, I never liked McGuire as Peter Parker. That cast made no sense, none. Here Garfield and Stone are perfect as PP/SM/GS.

I guess I'll be in the minority but I can't wait to see Octopus, Vulture, more of Rhino and Mysterio.

That will also mean that Electro will probably be back too.

I hope Electro comes back. He and Harry make a good pair.

The more that face popped up, the funnier it got. By the end it was just hysterical

Yes! It was really hilarious. Though I did like them at least having Peter realize he was being a dick by ignoring Captain Stacy's dying request, and kaboom! Stacy was proven right.

Well yeah, she was always supposed to die, be it in this movie or in the future. The real test comes in how they handle it. If in ASM3 he's perfectly cool and messing around with Black Cat/MJ than the point of her dying will have been completely lost. It's supposed to be one of the most impactful, formative events in his life. If he shows up in ASM3 perfectly fine I'm going to be so pissed

What happened to the Lizard? Is he going to be one of the Sinister Six?

If they don't want to introduce someone new, then yes. I don't think Venom will be in it at all, so that leaves: Green Goblin, Rhino, Electro, Doc Ock, Vulture, and The Lizard. Unless someone new comes out of the woodwork or I'm totally forgetting something in the Oscorp lab

Rotting in prison. I don't think he'll join up since Connors wants to protect Peter.

I bet the movie will start out with him all morose and shit, and then Mary Jane will bring him back out of his shell with optimism and sexiness.

I think it'll be Chameleon or Mysterio, not Lizard. Those hints in the credits that Sony dropped don't include Lizard.

Mysterio is supposed to be in the Sinister Six, The Lizard has 0 reason to join with OSCORP again

I'm betting Lizard won't join up, but will play some part. Like creating a proper Rhino using his blood or something---as in a biological Rhino instead of a robot suit.

So that'd leaves 2 new villains backstory to be told....in a 6 villains movie....

I think they're going to use the "Just find someone who wants the suit" as a way to skip backstories, like they did for the Rhino. They have the tech, just give it to someone.

Think they'll ever have the balls to incorporate Kraven's Last Hunt into something?

I doubt it. That seems like a story that would make an excellent standalone film, but it wouldn't fit into a Sinister Six picture.

Though, I could see elements of it adapted, by having Harry offer Kraven the chance for 'one final hunt', Kraven besting Spider-Man early on, and then killing himself at the end in some "honourable" fashion. Maybe near the end he brutally beats Spider-Man on his own terms, and rather than finally kill him, he forces Spider-Man to acknowledge Kraven's victory before committing suicide?

Dr. Kafka was weird. The German accent and all. Pretty sure he was wearing lipstick and eye liner with the joke being that Kafka was a female character in the comics.. dumb.

I had tears in my eyes almost the entire movie.

The soundtrack from the start was on point, and my girlfriend told me we were going to see this in Imax the second Itsy Bitsy Spider started. After seeing Doc Ock get ravaged in SM2, Electro's unapologetic attitude was a breath of fresh air. I really hope he's back for Sinister Six, just for his theme alone. Emma Stone was amazing as usual, and her last scene is a stunner. Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man, and really brought it to a whole new level. During the 'rebound' montage, when he gets sick is so perfect, just give me that for another 2 movies. Dehanne's goblin laugh was genuinely chilling, and he really brought the whole movie home. When Spider-Kid showed up, I just gave up, and let the tears flow. I think the only complaint could be the airplane plot, but that was just to emphasise that Max draining the city of power is more than just melted ice cream.

This movie, this fucking movie; best Spider-Man movie yet.

Preach it brother! I loved it as well.

Oh, I got it! Kraven and Peter fight several times throughout ASM3, each time Kraven fights only with his hands and primitive weapons. At the end, he resorts to using weaponry and brutally injures Pete. After forcing Peter to admit who is the superior hunter, he then commits suicide.

I really want a villain to commit suicide in one of these superhero films. That'd be fucked up.

Dr. Kafka was weird. The German accent and all. Pretty sure he was wearing lipstick and eye liner with the joke being that Kafka was a female character in the comics.. dumb.

Yeah, he felt like he walked out of a completely different film. Max Pre-Electro, Kafka, and Alistair Smythe all felt like they walked out of some super-campy flick in the 90s.

That wasn't suicide, that was a heroic sacrifice.

I WILL NOT DIE A MONSTER

Tears, man. Tears.
What? Doc Ock is a calculating scientist, which means he is doing everything for a reason. He's not the joker, and he robs banks to fund his shit. Having him feel sad about finally achieving the thing he lost his wife for and give up is how romantic comedies end the second act before someone reminds them they should do what they love, because their loved one loved them for doing what they loved, or ironically how this movie ends. Turns out Tobey's the dick for getting him to kill himself.

Weren't the arms driving him insane to do all that shit?

Weren't the arms driving him insane to do all that shit?
I think they make him more driven, but he's already a scientist with clear goals. Scientists, especially in Marvel, always seem to be shrewd assholes and all are fucking people over for science goals regardless of their status as hero or villain.

Dr. Kafka was weird. The German accent and all. Pretty sure he was wearing lipstick and eye liner with the joke being that Kafka was a female character in the comics.. dumb.

I have no clue what the fuck they were thinking with Dr. Kafka. It made absolutely no sense and was just the antithesis of what they seemed to be wanting to do. The second he opened his mouth to talk I thought "Oh god, and here's the low point."

It wasn't, but it was a low point. Unbelievable that the character made it past script doctoring.

SM2's ending was garbage.

Octopus redeeming himself? Commiting suicide to rejoin his beloved wife?

Doc Oc?

That was beyond stupid and laid the ground for the abomination that was SM3

So what? It fit with his character in the movie.

This is going to turn into "it's not like the comic, so it's bad!!!!!!!!!!!" argument isn't it?

I'm suprised people are making such a big deal about peter being an asshole. Tobeys spiderman did some pretty dick-ish stuff too. Remember the whole "I know exactly how you feel, spider-man deals with that all the time" stuff or when he kissed gwen right in front on MJ at the spidey festival?
