The Amazing Spider-Man 2 |SPOILER THREAD| Enter Marc’s Webb

I'm suprised people are making such a big deal about peter being an asshole. Tobeys spiderman did some pretty dick-ish stuff too. Remember the whole "I know exactly how you feel, spider-man deals with that all the time" stuff or when he kissed gwen right in front on MJ at the spidey festival?
This Peter is so authentic to what a real teenager superhero could be, it's giving me flashes of the hate for attack the block. Everyone got stuck on how 'unrelatable' they are as chavs. Just because a person is shitty doesn't mean they don't have the capacity to be a 'hero,' and in fact that's a far more interesting tale than a guy who just needs powers so as to help more. If you haven't seen the Misfits, check it out. 5 kids in juvie get super powers, so good, and one of them is Peter through and through.

So what? It fit with his character in the movie.

This is going to turn into "it's not like the comic, so it's bad!!!!!!!!!!!" argument isn't it?

Doc Ock's portrayal in Spider-Man 2 is the only good villain he's ever had in these movies. How many characters have had voices in their heads now? Norman Goblin, Ock Tentacles, Venom Symbiote, Harry Goblin (SM3), Lizard, and now Electro? They really have been the weakest part of these movies for a long time, I hope Electro drops his bumbling idiot shtick if he returns for the Sinister Six. I can't take another movie with that dreck

The clock tower was probably there long before the power plant. I imagine OSCORP bought the land and put up their power plant there and just let the clock tower stay. Why does it matter? In big cities there is conflicting architecture everywhere.

Wasn't it on a small island away from the city? The kinda place you would stick a power plant that nobody would want to live around. What would a clock tower be doing on an island away from the city? Why wouldn't it be demolished if it was the only building on that island other than the plant? Oscorp couldn't afford it?

I hope Electro comes back. He and Harry make a good pair.

I felt echoes of Poison Ivy leading Bane around when they broke into that man's office.

Them reviving the Oscorp guy got a gasp and laugh at my showing. What a great scene.

The OsCorp asshole is still alive, which is disappointing. OsCorp is the most cartoonishly evil corporation I have ever seen in my life. I hope Sinister Six is just about Harry gathering a team to go destroy OsCorp (except Felicia, who just seems like a sweetheart).

I swear to God if they introduce her as Black Cat just to kill her off, HEADS WILL ROLL

I really wish parents would be more considerate of the dozens of other people who paid good money to be there. How hard is to explain to a kid not to utter a single fucking word if they want to stay in the theatre.

When Gwen died, some dumbfuck 4 year old kept yelling "wake up, don't sleep" amongst other things and it completely ruined the atmosphere of the highlight of an otherwise mediocre movie. Pretty but very mediocre.

Dehaan is an awesome actor btw.

Just saw it, was fun, action scenes were nice and kinetic, but wow, someone really needed to shave that script down. So much useless stuff..just listing a few

-planes in mid-air....who gives a shit, completely unneeded
-Aunt May hiding that she's nursing...why? what was the point of that? it's not like she's hiding the fact that she's working more, just that she's nursing instead of waitressing...and it's not like they showed them having money troubles....
-the armored car heist...ok, I get that you want to introduce spiderman with an action sequence...a sort of "this is what spidey's been doing with his days" sort of thing...great...but it went on fucking long, went nowhere, and focused so much on those vials which meant nothing to the rest of the film
-Gwen being hunted in Oscorp...again, a whole sequence that ultimately meant nothing...she steps out of the building and then it's all done? did she continue to go to work after that? a few days later, Peter bumps into her going into her interview for Oxford...did the security at Oscorp not care and not follow her home or anything? So she wasn't in any real trouble at all?
-saving the kid from the bullies...oddly inserted, meant nothing to the story, but this one is forgivable because the callback at the end was done nicely
-the D train...this is the big one...a huge thread leading up to it, the entire opening sequence setting it up and the danger of getting the upload complete, and massive reveals as Peter goes through revelations and discovery...and then...nothing. Absolutely nothing that furthers the plot. The only thing we get out of it was Peter learning that his Dad was a good man (something he believed just a few moments before until Aunt May said he was a traitor)....

All of that, every single bit, could have been cut completely from the movie, and it wouldn't have changed a thing. In fact, it would have given them more time to develop the near instantaneous character arcs. Max going from unappreciated meek worker to rage-filled villain could have used another step or two. Peter and Harry's relationship going from 'haven't seen each other in 10 years' to 'my bestest buddy!' could have used another step or two. And then there's Harry's transformation. Dad dies at 56 "Harry, this will happen to you...continue my work and cure it!" 20 year old Harry starting to just notice his hand trembling...two days later, he's developing lesions and his skin is changing color and he's dying.

So, yeah, fun film, fun action, still hate Garfield as Peter, but I did like the romance plot a lot, thought he and Gwen were done well. Everything else was either much too rushed, or completely useless. Oh, and the CG was a mess...but I got over that early on.

Harry Osborn was so trash. I didn't buy that friendship either. They became best friends again in the span of like 10 seconds in that corny scene

Dude has trouble getting words out it seems, I hope I don't have to see him in any other films again

I like how people were just standing behind a barricade during fights with bullets, missiles and lighting flying everywhere. The people aren't afraid of death, it seems.

-Aunt May hiding that she's nursing...why? what was the point of that? it's not like she's hiding the fact that she's working more, just that she's nursing instead of waitressing...and it's not like they showed them having money troubles....
Big theme of the movie is family ties/history repeating and it's showing a connection between May, Richard and Peter all having the same stoic face-saving personality traits.

Also ties into one of a few conversations she has with Peter where she's clearly telling him she knows and just wants him to say it. (And he of course misses the hint.)

I come back from the movie for a second time and I see Spider-Man 2 bashing? smh

I do like that this film moves fast, but damn, do I really need to see a buildup of the Spider-logo at the end? That last bit of triumphant music could've been used for the ending shot instead, then cut to credits. But that's just me.

All hail DeHaan.

I agree with some of the things you said but the armored car heist was pretty great and the kid in the alley scene was maybe my favorite in the movie.

re: Harry dying - it was as if he only needed to be told that he had a genetic disease for it to start killing him. Norman shouldn't've told him.

You left some scenes in that could've been removed like the German scientist and the parents in the plane at the beginning (I like how the pilot just fell asleep causing the plane to go into a nosedive. I know that wasn't what really happened, but it sure looked that way.)

It was funny that the kid Spider-Man saved was in his house one minute and then on the street with Rhino the next. As if the Mom saw the news and hurried outside to see the giant mech monster. Then the kid ran out to the street and the Mom started screaming. I was like, "Why did you bring him to this event with a Spider-Man costume?"

The bad guy killed him. Hence the blood on his hands (literally).

Sucks, because I kinda dug the action in that, but it made little sense at the same time.

How did Gwen show up in Times Square moments after Peter? Peter and she were looking at Times Square from a great distance, he got a good head start on her and assuredly took the shortcut of swinging over the entire city.

I was thinking "Why the hell are ANY of them there?" But I guess it's New York City with a new villian every Tuesday, so I guess you can't miss your opportunity to get a picture. #selfiewithamonster

Question: how did Gwen die, exactly? It happened so quickly. Did she her head hit the ground, or was it just the force of Spiderman's web jerking her like that?

Right. There are a lot of people walking the streets in NYC but when a tank is shooting machine guns at cops who are firing back, it's time to frikkin run like hell in the opposite direction. Actually, they should've been running away earlier than that, but whatever. Instead, barricades were set up like the cops knew this event was going to take place.

re: Gwen - she bonked her head. There was a thud.

Just when you thought we fired enough holes into this movie.

In hindsight, I don't know why Harry was so desperate to cure himself, going on about how he was running out of time. His father lived into his 60s, there wasn't any need to rush a cure.

It wasn't very clear but you can infer that norman experimented on himself in order to prolong his life but also had side effects.

it's not very clear how much time harry has left.

dane dehaan reminds me of leonardo dicaprio with a mental disability.

...gilbert grape leonardo dicaprio. this man is so slow. then i google what his next film is in case i have to suffer another shitty braindead performance from him and I stumble across this:

LMAO he's just trolling james franco at this point.

I thought it was to add more suspense to the Electro and Spidey fight. Can Spider-Man turn the power on in time!? Or maybe to add scale to the third act? I thought it was out of place lol.

I was more wondering what the point of the May in the hospital scenes were. They cut to her twice... for what purpose?

Probably just to make her seem like she wasn't useless to the story even tho she was.

Aunt May : "Let's get back to work people!"
All the actual doctors: "Okay Doctor Old Lady!"

This is actually the first movie where he didn't bother me. Couldn't stand his characters in Chronicle or Place Beyond the Pines (which were basically the same person).

Just putting a name/face to the people being affected. I agree that it, and the near-plane crash, weren't necessary though.

damn dude, you're getting really upset over such a trivial thing. calm down

So what? It fit with his character in the movie.

This is going to turn into "it's not like the comic, so it's bad!!!!!!!!!!!" argument isn't it?

Its a perfectly valid comlaint. Imagine if Sauron was looking for the one ring because his wife made it for him rather than to gain ultimate power. If your going to adapt something you stick to the main notes of the particular story. How much can you change a charcter before it ceases to be that character? Doc Ock is a power mad scientist, not someone who sacrifices himself. Of course theres plenty of little things that need to be changed or don't really matter such as spider-mans webbing being organic in the Raimi trilogy. I prefer the web shootters myself but its no big deal. It is when you change the entire personality of a character.

When the hell did hating on Spider-man 2 become a thing!? I know to many people have a MCU bias in that if it isn't the Marvel Cinematic Universe it sucks and had no redeeming quality and is worse then dog crap but I thought Spider-man 2 was early enough and so good that it didn't get hit with that crap.

Uhh what?? It's one thing to change something and ignoring the source material. The example you gave IGNORE the source material because it misinterpreted Sauron characterization.

Raimi's Doc Ock is still a mad scientist in the movie, but his starting point in the story and motivations is different.

Are'nt a charcaters motivations what define him? A character that is driven mad by the chip being blown and his tentacles taking control is very different to a character who was abused as a kid and has serious esteem and power issues. I'd argue that they are different characters except superficially looking the same.

Raimi's Doc Ock is still a mad scientist in the movie, but his starting point in the story and motivations is different.

Well it's implied his evil acts came entirely from his AI tents, or were at least strongly swayed. It takes the ego and sociopath that many saw Doc Ock as and replaced him with a very sympathetic Mr Freeze from TAS style villain. Which is fine, and Molina was fantastic, but it's not like the complaints of inaccuracy aren't then valid.

Raimi's spider-man films are decent movies but not great adaptations of the source material. Webb spider-man films are arguably not as good movies but better adaptations of the source material.

Let's call it a wash

Let's call it a wash

Correction: Raimi's was a great adaptation (3 notwithstanding), just not as faithful as ASM.

Let's hope the next reboot will get both right.

The quality of the movie should never take a back seat to the source material. How good or bad a movie is is more important than how faithful it is to the book, or whatever.

Raimi's movies may have not been great adaptations of the original stories themselves, but they did excel at capturing the same spirit and tone of the comics.

fwiw, I thought ASM2 did a solid job of being more faithful to the source material than Raimi without sacrificing its own quality.

With perfect hair and no blood?

It's a PG-13 movie, they're not going to show Gwen's head getting caved in.

I thought the blood dripping from her nose made it clear that it was a head injury. I don't think that would happen if it was a broken neck/spine?

There's a big-ass "THUD". I don't know how people missed it.

Why do people think the clock tower is in the power plant?

Harry grabs Gwen, flies up, spidey chases and they end up at a clock tower. It sure looked and felt like he chased him away from the plant and to the tower (which featured one of my favorite little Spidey moment, him climbing up his webs as he swung).
