Point n Click Adventure GAF 2014 No longer in our dreams, memories or just Germany.

I should really go back to the game and finish it. I think I'm at about 75% point and stuck with a puzzle, I'm not sure what the game wants me to do. But anyway, I should be able to figure it out eventually.

lower your expectations a bit :/

Not BS3/4 low though!

So far I like it (only about 10% complete according to the save). Yea, a bit easy and enclosed so far, but the game feels right. I don't know what the consensus on the models and animation are, but I think they're pretty good. The background art is very nice. It feels like a real throwback while being modern at the same time.

I was never a huge fan of the BS series and think it's a bit overrated. I'd put BS1 in the top 15, maybe top 10, but not top 5. BS2 had a cool story but it was quite linear and the humor fell quite flat for me. BS3 is a good game despite the crate puzzles, and BS4 is mostly average. Still, it's a good series overall.

I thought the first half of BS5 was rather excellent. Nowhere as linear and simple as BS2, reminded me lot more of BS1. Well, I guess the game was more linear than BS1, but at least there was some illusion of non-linearity.... In BS2 you went from one small area to next all the time.

I think they went back and improved them since the first episode came out - I had issues with ep1 but ep2 was fine. I never went back and played ep1 after they released the 1080p patch though

Yup, backgrounds are magnificent.

Top fifteen IS pretty damn good!
I mean for me:

1)Indy & the Fate of Atlantis
2)Day of the Tentacle
3)Monkey Island 2
4)Discworld Noir
5)Grim Fandango
6)Simon the Sorcerer
7)Broken Sword : Shadows of the Templars
8)Ben there Dan That / Time Gentleman Please
9)Blackwell Bundle
10)Sam & Max Hit the Road

With the caveat that I really need to replay the tex murphy games & Last Express.

Agreed there, although I think you rate BS3 a bit higher then me. BS2 felt like it was rushed, which was really frustrating to me as it had by far the best story of any of the BS games.

Broken Sword 1 & 2
Machinarium
Gemini Rue
The Silent Age
Simon the Sorcerer
Fester Mudd: Curse of the Gold
ScummVM is on there for emulating the old LucasArts stuff
Kaptain Brawe
Luisure Suit Larry Reloaded
Violett
The Shivah

Thanks, i'll try looking into a couple of those. Wish there were more, though.

Yea, that was an issue with BS2. It still had some challenge, but it was still too linear.

Hey, put Gabriel Knight in there! Wait, I don't see any Sierra games in your top 10. :p

Yea, I still think BS1 is a fantastic game, but imo the rest of the series gets a bit inflated because of how much people love the first one. I was really impressed with how many backers BS5 had during the kickstarter. I didn't realize how big the fanbase was, relatively speaking.

Yea, I loved the Mayan lore of BS2. I thought it was a bit disappointing to see the series keep going back to the Templars/Crusades/etc. Can't really complain if that's Charles Cecil's favorite era, but it's part of the reason that 3 and 4 weren't too memorable for me from a story angle.

I've never been into pint and click adventure games. But I played The Walking Dead and was sold. I'm looking to starting Season 2 soon and Wolf Among Us. Can I expect this level of quality from most of the games in the OP?

Telltale's recent games are closer to a western visual novel than a traditional PnC.

There are some potentially great upcoming games in the OP, but keep expectations in check. Both the gameplay and the production values (budgets are usually a lot smaller than what TT spend on their games) will vary.

Ha ha ha, I never really got into most of the sierra p&c's. Didn't help that I had a torrid time trying to install them in the early nineties compared to the lucasarts stuff that tended to be far more straightforward.

TWD isn't really a classicly styled point & click game, so it's not really going to be indicative of how much you enjoy the genre in general though.

You can expect a high level of narrative quality from select games; most early lucasart games, most games under the wadjeteye banner, the ben and dan games, the last express, most revolution games and quite a few others.

But puzzle quality is also a major factor in point & click games(although most of the games by the above dev/pubs are good in that respect).

this. TWD is more of a watered down adventure game-lite or visual novel if you will. The level of writing of most modern point and click adventures isn't up to part with most of the more with the writing in TWD, but I've been replaying through the entire LucasArts point + click backlog and I'm still having a blast - the writing is much better too. You're more-than-likely gonna get stuck on the puzzles though because many of these games can be difficult to solve and force you to think outside of the box.

another suggestion could be Broken Age Part 1 which is again... more of an adventure game-lite than your average point and click adventure, but it's by Tim Schafer (who worked on most of those lucasarts point and click adventures) and it has a high level of production design and writing.

I see, thanks for the replies. I will finish these games first before I look into any others. I remember getting stuck on some point and click games because they could be really obscure in how to solve the puzzles.

Tesla Effect is up on steam. Downloading now. Can't wait to play this game. I got a steam code sent to me as a backer. Not sure if it's up for everyone though.

I can't fucking wait either. Played the demo last night and was so impressed. I hope this allows them to make another, or do something new even.

So pumped for a new Tex game GAF!

There was a demo? I missed out on that. Oh well the real thing will be ready shortly. :) 13.6GB download, at 4.5GB after 10 minutes.

Well this is interesting.

The 7th Guest Returns To Crowdfunding With TV and Movie Deal

Trilobyte also announced a deal with Angel Valley Media for film and television treatments of the franchise. "Bringing Henry Stauf and the rich universe of the series to life in film was inevitable," Angel Valley President Matthew Lewis said in a statement. "We'll be working side-by-side with Trilobyte Games to give players a new look into Stauf's world, with new storylines and characters tightly interwoven with the game series."

Looks like the post-Kickstarter fundraising is still going on.

What's everyone's opinion on The Samaritan Paradox? Just bought it as I've been wanting to play it for a while.

So far I'm loving the vibe of the game and having voices really makes it more fun. I don't mind old-school-ish PnC adventure games, but having no voices usually hurts it a lot in my opinion when it comes to my attention.

Me and the gf just beat Escape from Rosecliff Island and had a blast. Its just a hidden object game. Does anyone know of any other good hidden object games. I know there is alot but maybe if there is any top tier ones on steam. Thanks a bunch

Regarding the Broken Sword series I get why the first game is called Broken Sword by why is every other game after that called Broken Sword when they have nothing to do with the Templars or the Sword of Baphomet (aka the Broken Sword)?

Better off calling it the Adventures of Stobbart and Collard.

does the steam version of fate of atlantis work with win 8.1?

Dunno, but unless steam did something weird to the files you should just be able to point scummvm at them to get it to run anyway.

Unless steam already uses scummvm? I know little about steam.

-edit - looks like they did mess around with the files

Already got that name recognition - especially since BS1 got a PSX port.

They could do something similar to what Gabriel Knight 2 did, where the game was titled "The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery".
They tried something similar with Broken Sword 4 which was released in the US with the title "Secrets of the Ark: A Broken Sword Game".
I would appreciate though if they would release and market the games with the "Broken Sword" name worldwide and drop those localized titles like "Baphomets Fluch" in German and "Les Chevaliers de Baphomet" in French. It's really confusing especially on Steam. If you search for "Baphomets Fluch" in the German store you'll find the games but they are labeled as "Broken Sword" which could be confusing for lesser informed gamers.

Speaking of Broken Sword, I finally came around to play Episode 2 of BS5 (I replayed Episode 1 to experience the whole thing) and I must say, Episode 2 is so much better than Episode 1. Better dialog, better characters, way better puzzles. I love it, highly recommended!

The Samaritan Paradox is beautiful and the voice acting isn't terrible, but maybe I'm just getting lax in my puzzle doing days but these puzzles are really hurting me, hah. Having to resort to looking at GameBoomer forum posters more than I'd like, lol.

I need Lost Horizon 2 in my life. Have they set a release date?
They have announced it already? Wow, this totally slipped past me. I really liked the LH1.

Just looked it up, I don't think they have a release date yet. But ugh, 3D engine? Oh no... I remain skeptical.

It's going to be amazing. Set 20 years after the first game and Fendon looks like a badass now instead of the dweeb he was in the first.

Finally got round to playing Moebius today.

Reviews nailed it on the head. This game seems crammed full of horrible, obnoxious people. Some of the animation is uber-janky, puzzles are generally easy.

Got stuck right near the end of the game due to a bug, had to edit my save file to continue(
game thought I had a grenade when I didn't
).

Would probably give it about 5/10.

The new Blackwell game is fantastic.
That's how you do a P&C adventure. Amazing game.

And... holy shit, that ending. Wasn't expecting that (
I was betting on Joey moving on, honestly
). Bittersweet but beautiful.
Sad that there won't be another Blackwell.

Anyway, the whole
"universe in her head that gives her powers" thing is a bit kitschy and sort of a deus-ex-machina... it's the only thing in the game that feels out of place and I'm not crazy about.

Well, now it's Tex Murphy's turn.
Edit: For god's sake, is there a way to redefine the keybinds in Tesla Effect? Unplayable for me with the default ones.

the file confuses me.

do I need to do that stuff, to play the game under win 8.1?

what does this mean:
Use dd
------

command: "dd if=Indiana\ Jones\ and\ the\ Fate\ of\ Atlantis.exe of=ATLANTIS.000 bs=1 skip=224336 count=12035"
?
how do I use dd?

My wife and I finally delved into Blackwell Epiphany while on a weekend getaway. (She looked at me at one point and said "Is it weird that we're playing point and clicks on a laptop in a hotel room in a resort?" I said, "Maybe, but it's what you and I both want to do, so screw it.")

Wow, maybe it's because it's been a long time, but this game feels like it's on a whole other level from the previous ones. Way more tense, and the puzzles feel a lot more difficult. (Getting access to the account in Trollgate seemed like a much more in-depth puzzle than I expected.) I've got to say though, I'm really enjoying it, and looking forward to finishing.

Yup, I've recently played some of the Wadjet games and for me the Blackwell ones, the few I've played anyway, are comfortably better than the others.

Which is weird because I've heard so much fuss about Gemini Rue and Resonance, but I found those game inferior to the Blackwell ones. While they had some interesting ideas, the paper thin plots and characters left me feeling pretty empty playing through them. They had a mind, but lacked a heart and soul.

The Blackwell games had a much stronger sense of character and place, and that makes for a much better adventure game. It's all about the writing really.

Looking forward to finishing the Blackwell series.
