Vice: "The Matrix is Dated and Embarrasing."

Just watched them all last week. The first one is still a great movie, as it was last year when I watched it. I have nostalgia for Reloaded, even if it isn't all that great and Revolutions is kinda meh. The CGI holds up pretty well in all of them, expect during closeups of human characters of course.

I agree in spots. The visual effects haven't aged well, and since so many action films ripped off The Matrix in the decade that followed it - it feels a little trite from a modern context. It also still suffers from the leather-trenchcoat-and-sunglasses look, which wierd highschool kids nationwide adopted as their uniform of choice. (You see a similar effect with V for Vendetta. Watching it in a post-Anonymous world is just cringeworthy.).
The movie was following the trend of trench coat wearing, not creating it. Though I'm sure it crystallized it into more of a thing.

Take the Columbine killers, for example, who wore them and were known by the douche-worthy name "Trench Coat Mafia". Apparently they had seen the movie prior to their attack, but it was so immediately after the release of the film that it hadn't caught a larger word of mouth yet. It didn't have the time to influence their look.

I don't get that critizism.

A movie made in the late 90s captured that times Zeitgeist? Same could be said about Scarface or Blade Runner both entangled with music, couture, make-up and neon colors straight from the 80s.
Or any other movie out of the 80s.

Think this Matrix verdict stemming from a resentment towards the 90s (one I share in several points) says nothing really about the movie.

Maybe it's me thats dated but I love everything about it, including the soundtrack.

I'd love a new film or tv show in the Matrix universe.

Opera scene is cringeworthy. The singing...the techno...the horror.

Of all the terrible uses of the terrible word "cringeworthy" this is the most terrible. Thank you for finally putting the word out of its misery, hopefully we can all move on.

It's still a cool movie. The idea of using humans as batteries is so dumb though. It still annoys me. Futurama ripped into The Matrix for the humans as batteries idea in a recent episode, and it was cathartic.

I haven't rewatched Matrix since seeing the sequels, both of which I only saw once. The second in the theater, I was incredibly hyped, the third one long after it hit home video, so thoroughly did the second one kill any affection I had for that universe.

I couldn't even tell you what happens in the matrix sequels, I just remember that I hated them both. A lot.

I love Vice, but their clickbait articles like these one are some of the worst things that one can read on the Internet.

Vice said:
The only thing that truly separates The Matrix from its forebears is a bunch of annoying songs by horrible bands and bullet time.
What, like Massive Attack, The Prodigy and Rage Against the Machine?

What is this guy smoking?

Yeah, the Matrix created a mini-trend of trenchcoats being socially acceptable again, but that lastly only as long as it took the first nerd in a duster getting his ass whupped while being called "Morpheus."

Yeah, I had the same experience. I really like how it is now (generally) accepted as fact that the sequels were fucking terrible.

It wan't good back then, it just took Vice a decade and a half to realise it.

I was a huge Matrix fan, was super psyched for 2 and 3. So I was quite disappointed when I left the theater. Didn't touch them for years. Until a few years ago I rewatched them. Quite enjoyed myself. Guess the unrealistic high expectations killed the movie for many.

I say go for another watch. I had a good time with the rewatch.

the first movie was cool. the rest were embarrassing as fuck. the leather shit and sunglasses were sooo wack. ugh. had some cool fight scene but naaah

pfft foreal? at least their "click bait" articles are somewhat interesting. at least it's not like "top 10 reasons" or "5 reasons why"

The allegory of the cave is never dated.

I think I saw something on reddit that said the producers/studio got them to change it from using brains as processors to using humans as batteries. Don't know if it's true.

This is true. There are two things I know well about Vice.

Their video content is almost uniformly incredible, ranging from whimsical to serious and covering situations and topics that no other media outlet would dare touch.

Their written content is, by most accounts, juvenile and puerile. When it's not going out to take photos of hipsters at concert, it's long free-form pieces that are either incredibly obvious, have next-to-no point, or are clickbait articles like this.

The only thing that's embarassing is the decline of the movie industry these past years.

The Matrix is and will always be an excellent film.

The katrix I can see, but the Fifth Element only shares one or two elements with Blade Runner. The Fifth Element is insanely camp.... But I guess any film that has polution and flying cars is copying Blade Runner?

'Embarrassing'

Hyperbole much?

Exactly, who's embarrassed? The people who made it? They wouldn't have been embarrassed at the time as it was a great movie so it wouldn't matter if it didn't hold up (even though I think it does). Are they embarrassed watching it? If so, then they must be embarrassed by a lot of things and I'm glad I'm not them.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go crank up some Limp Bizkit while I work without a red face.

I'm a fan of McLuhan's "The medium is the message" theory. Therefore I think that The Matrix is one of the best movies of all time simply because it was the uncontested spearhead of its time with regard to filming techniques. You simply can't rate The Matrix high enough.

I agree with this. Killer avatar btw.

Huh? Last year was stacked with quality films. The big studios may be consolidating mostly into tentpole stuff but there is plenty of brilliant films out there in the low to mid budget range.

It's still a great action movie with a fantastic score, awesome fight-choreography and overall aesthetic. It's a movie I can rewatch and still enjoy so much every time. Sure the sequels suck barring a few scenes, but the original has held up pretty well.

Yeah, this dude is just throwing shit at a wall and hoping it sticks. The original is going to be considered a true classic in the years to come, and I would argue that it paved the way for the modern sci-fi blockbusters. I mean, I would bet that over half the people I know have seen that movie, which I'm guessing is pretty good for a movie like it.

Sure, but the tentpole stuff is getting worse as they're literally duplicating what they've been doing for years now. Movies with a substantial budget are getting much harder to make if they don't fit the studio model, even for powerful people such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

It's the reason why we're seing the talent pool being driven to making content for television instead, which explains the increase in quality in that industry.

EXISTENZ was the best of that wave, imo.

Have you watched that movie recently?

Not good.

Also, the green tint thing, what's weird is that the original Matrix poster was actually purple.

I didn't even think of it as a Christ allegory until the third one when you can sort of see him get some "cross" pattern light in him. That said, the movie was made 15 years ago. Of course it's going to be looked at differently, just like Independence Day or any other 90's blockbuster film. I still like the Matrix and thought it was a pretty great film.
