Apprently it was well known before the 22nd pick that the Vikings were going to trade back up for Bridgewater. The talk of them losing out to the Browns for Manziel must have been a smokescreen or they thought the Browns wanted Teddy.
Multiple reports said the wanted JFF. I'm sure they want it out that they wanted Teddy, but real time the reports were they wanted Manziel
I'm taking Pettine at his word that he does not want to start a rookie QB. Seriously the only thing we have to hope for is Hoyer doesn't get injured. If that happens then oh boy.
I believe Pettine will be a strong enough voice to combat anyone (ESPN, fans) who want Johnny to start.
Plus we also do have Vince Young, Tyler Thigpen and possibly one more free agent QB to sign.
This is the problem, and it goes for any QB that a team is trying to develop, including Bortles and Teddy. There are only so many snaps available in practice. If you want your young QB to get better, you want him throwing with the first team in training camp, vs the first team defense
During the season, when snaps are even more limited, you want your young QB taking all those first team snaps in practice. CLE wants JFF throwing to Josh Gordon. Just like they want Gilbert learning his craft by going up against Gordon.
The trade off is of course the starter, if it isn't the young QB, needs those snaps so he can help the team win games. If they split snaps, you are both hurting the team's chance to win and also slowing the QB's development. Most backup QBs take very few snaps during the season with the first team
So Pettine can talk all he wants about competition, but the reality is he has to make a decision early on, or he's going to start a QB week one that is more under-prepared than he should be
