2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hey guys, another poor soul wanting for help, any input is appreciated:

Region: Europe

Maximum budget: As much as 2000 € I don't mind doing a good investment for something that will hold up for 3-4 years.

Max size: My idea is something that won't be ginormous. Ideally I would like to be able to use it in a plane or in a train, so I was thinking something around 15".

Planned usage: I would like something to play any modern game I can throw to it, basically. It´s going to be my gaming platform when I'm away, so I want something as close as a desktop as it's possible.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc: I would like it to have a superb screen, best in the market. I love how Apple screen looks and I would like something similar if possible, definitely something glossy.

I'm a bit worried about not seeing 8xx Gpus in Europe. I would like to have this computer before the end of may but I didn't have much luck finding laptops with the latest GPUs around here.

I've been wanting a laptop for awhile for when I travel and so I can go to my friend's place instead of them LANing and me just on Skype talking to them.

I dont want to buy something that i feel will not last.

Maybe increase that RAM a little, as new games already need minimum 6GB RAM....in a couple years 8GB will be the new minimum!

I was thinking of upping it to 12gbs of ram, final price is 1408$, good deal?

I also dropped the SSD to a Sandisk that's a bit slower and its in 1380 range
 
I wish the Lenovo discounts were in effect. One of the draws of ordering their laptops is the discounts.

I was thinking of buying the Y40 but not for more than $700-$800.

I have a Y470 from 2011. Hopefully, the track pad, build quality and cooling are better.

When the prices dips down to about $1000-$1100, absolutely. The 860M is a solid GPU and the i7 should do fine as well.

For the current prices of $1300+? Eh. Feels like you're paying quite a premium for the form factor. Also not a huge fan of the storage options. You're getting a slow 5400RPM HDD and hardly any SSD space. It's not until the $1450 model where you get a 512GB SSD. If there really is only 1 SATA slot and no mSATA slots inside it, the storage options seem a bit limited.
 
Looking at the Y50 right now, the only model I'd be happy with is the most expensive one at $1,450. For that price I'm guessing there are better options?
 
Any ideas as to when reviews of the y50 and y40 will come out? Also when will the QHD model hit?

I'm currently debating with myself whether I should get the MSI Apache Pro with the 860m or the MSI Dominator with the 870m......

I believe the 860m is based on the Maxwell architecture.
 
I am looking at a laptop for my brother that runs games at low to mid settings. I have seen a few with nvidia optimus that saves power by running on intel HD4400 integrated graphics when it doesn't need to use the GT 740M. Does this switching between graphics work seamlessly? My brother is not very technical, and I don't want to suggest a laptop if it is going to cause any drama for him to use.

I thought I heard there might be a Maxwell 870m by the end of the year, but I believe that's mostly speculation.

There's a Kepler based one as well, but I'm pretty sure the one in the Y50 is Maxwell. Putting a Kepler card in a thin laptop when there's a Maxwell version just seems silly.

I'm going to need a specific country., but it sounds like the MSI GT60 or Clevo P150SM are what you want.

Optimu switching is automatic, and you can add profiles in the Nvidia Control Panel.

For instance, when you first install Steam, the program uses the main GPU, so you need to go into the NCP and set it to use the integrated graphic instead. It's really simple.

Planned usage: This will be for both gaming and data work, so it means I need 16GB of RAM for data. Everything else can be geared towards gaming.

To be VERY precise: My main objective is to run Dark Souls 2 at 1080/60. The amount of compromise on weight/form factor and other things like that will vary greatly depending on how achievable this is.


Whatever else you find relevant, misc: Although a bigger form factor is not necessarily a deal breaker, having it look professional is absolutely a must. No Alienware "logos" on the shell, flashy designs, or things of the sort can be there since it will frequently be used in professional settings.

Yeah, I'm disappointed. I was waiting for the Y40. It seems woefully underpowered compared to past models and more expensive than past models. If it had a quad core, 850-860m, I'd be all over it. The Y50 just seems okay compared to the models from MSI, Clevo, RAZR and ASUS.
 
What are the lightest and thinnest 14 to 15.6 inch gaming laptops that'll release this year?

Also where can I get a GS60 3K edition in the UK?

If you're willing to go to 17" you can get a MSI GS70 StealthPro, or AORUS X7. For some reason the 14-15" range is not as popular, only good choice there I've seen is the new Razor Blade Ultra (14" model is actually faster than the 15" one too). That 14" Razor Blade is probably the fastest laptop on the market for it's weight, and the fastest 14" laptop at any weight for that matter as well, sporting a GTX 870M and also a ~4k display or whatever it has.

I'd be curious to know if there are any other ~15" laptops that weigh in at ~3-4 lbs, with a GTX 870 and a slim factor like the Razor Blade, but I don't think there are, you need to go to 17" to get a fast GPU like that outside the Razor Blade.

I don't consider 7lbs slim either, so the Sager 8150-sm/Clevo mentioned above or whatever wouldn't cut it if I were looking for a light/thin laptop.

Thanks for your reply I would go 17" but that extra screen size really does pile on the pounds. The Razer Blade is nice but it comes with that overpriced Razer price tage. Also it isn't possible to buy it officially in the UK so I'm worried that would invalidate the warranty.

I don't have a price for the UK yet, but in the US, the GS60 3k is up for preorder at $1999.00.

No official release date has been given by MSI.

So I'm thinking about getting a laptop for video editing in Premiere and After Effects and of course some gaming (Titanfall, Dark Souls II, Age of Wonders III). I've been eyeing these two laptops:

I'm looking to spend around $1300, but I'd rather go as low as I can go, so I'll probably look in the used section for a laptop from Amazon's Warehouse Deals. Which one should i get or is there something else that's cheaper and is more powerful than the two I listed?

The supply of the Pro is trickling in to all retailers right now. Ordering right now is getting yourself into the queue. You should contact a reseller like GentechPC, to see where their supply is. I know they've been shipping regularly.

K.Jack, could you please explain why you believe everyone should approach a laptop purchase as if they're simply not going to upgrade it? Is it because newer cards are often incompatible? I am thinking about buying a Lenovo Y510p (the SLI version), mainly because I am attracted by its Ultrabay feature. If it's ultimately pointless, then I'll most probably reconsider.

Also, may I have your thoughts on its specs as a whole? Thanks.

It's because most of the time you simply can't.
*Very* few laptops give the user the option to update the video card (most have a soldered one) and even then is a coin toss, and CPUs don't fare much better because having a compatible socket doesn't mean the BIOS will support every model that's pin-compatible.
RAM and HDD/SSD are generally upgradeable, but mind that several laptops aren't exactly disassembly friendly and lack easy access to said parts.

Usage: light gaming. I'd like to run things like Might and Magic X, Hearthstone, and maybe Plants v Zombies Garden Warfare on low settings.

Other considerations: The main thing is getting a dedicated graphics card on a fairly inexpensive laptop. I would prefer SSD; 100GB or so should be enough since I have an external HD. I'd go refurbished or something if it would help me keep the price down.

Now I hear desktops are better in that area but I am not sure so I am asking here.

I am willing to spend about 700$ I might be able to go above and spend 100$ more.
I want a laptop that will last me a long time and I want a optical drive as I burn CDs and DVDs.

Pretty much all he said. Plus high-end mobile GPUs cost half as much as a brand new $2k gaming laptop.

Thanks for the responses, I will probably consider building a PC instead. I enjoy the portability of laptops, being a student, but I value keeping my machine up to date more.

Well the reason I'm asking is because I haven't shopped for a laptop in around a decade so I have no idea what prices are like for certain features. How much does it cost to stick with Windows 7 in a laptop (the only W7 laptops Dell still sells are Alienware)? How much extra does it typically cost to get a laptop with an SSD? And surprisingly, even if I only wanted to install the odd indie game here and there, a lot of the low-end ones surprisingly don't run on integrated graphics, but ask for at least a low-tier dedicated GPU.

Edit: Wait, can you actually just put an SSD into a laptop? Or are there certain kinds and compatibilities?

I'd like guidance on which are better than others. Modern haswell should be enough for older games even with integrated graphics

1) how to find decent integrated graphics on haswell. I am starting to see more acceptably priced 4th gen laptops, but I'd like one with reasonable integrated graphics. This gen seems confusing with all the different variants (HD4000, 4400, 4600?, 5000, iris etc). And most stores don't give you any more detail than the processor and 'integrated graphics'. Is there any way to look up the COU and know which intel HD version it'll have?

2 - if we went with lower end dedicated graphics, they seem to be using much bigger numbers but I'm assuming that is mostly rebranding. Is there a sweet spot for low end dedicated GPUs?

3 - if we go with dedicated graphics, is the CPU gap between 3rd and 4th generation small enough that it'd be reasonable value to buy a discounted last gen machine with better graphics rather than a Haswell with lower spec GPU?

I'm mainly posting here to see if I can find a good Clevo equivalent to what I want.. Of course backlit KB is a must as well..

I'm mainly posting here to see if I can find a good Clevo equivalent to what I want.. Of course backlit KB is a must as well..

gathered my thoughts a little better (low end laptops are quite a minefield to pick out decent value). looking for a family laptop mainly for the kids. homework plus basic gaming - primarily minecraft. Keeping it below £500 would be ideal.

Thinking that a 4200M and 4200U should both be enough power for general use, but the 4200U should be with dedicated graphics as otherwise it gets clocked down due to the limited TDP. 4200M should have a faster IGP and be able to use it better due to the higher TDP of that chip.


options (in order of price):
1) Lenovo G510 £429
i5-4200M
Integrated graphics (but being the 4200m this shoudl be the HD4600 which should be ok for basic gaming?)
4GB RAM (can upgrade myself)
15" 1366x768
notes: slightly faster CPU than the 4200U and acceptable GPU?

2) Lenovo Z510 £499 link
i5-4200M
GT740m 1GB (says DDR3 for GPU ram though. eww)
4GB ram (easily upgraded)
15" 1366x768

3) Lenovo G510 £537
i7-4700MQ
Integrated graphics (should be the HD4600 which should be ok for basic gaming?)
8GB RAM (can upgrade myself)
15" 1366x768
notes: fastest CPU and acceptable GPU but worth £100 over the i5 4200m?

I was referring to what I bolded in your post. You said you wanted a quiet laptop but Clevo are probably the loudest of all of the gaming laptop brands. I say you just go for the Lenovo. The Lenovo is actually a little bit lighter than the Clevo too if weight makes any factor at all.
