Point n Click Adventure GAF 2014 No longer in our dreams, memories or just Germany.

the file confuses me.

do I need to do that stuff, to play the game under win 8.1?

what does this mean:
?
how do I use dd?

No - this is a guide for getting the steam version to run under SCUMM. As I said I've no idea if the steam version runs under 8.1 natively.

You would only need to do this IF the steam version didn't run under 8.1. DD is a Linux tool for extracting data from the executable. There's probably a windows equivalent, but this stuff is only necessary if the steam version doesn't work in the first place.

You could always email steam and ask if it runs under 8.1.

Yup, I've recently played some of the Wadjet games and for me the Blackwell ones, the few I've played anyway, are comfortably better than the others.

Which is weird because I've heard so much fuss about Gemini Rue and Resonance, but I found those game inferior to the Blackwell ones. While they had some interesting ideas, the paper thin plots and characters left me feeling pretty empty playing through them. They had a mind, but lacked a heart and soul.

The Blackwell games had a much stronger sense of character and place, and that makes for a much better adventure game. It's all about the writing really.

Looking forward to finishing the Blackwell series.
Prior to Deception I'd have probably agreed with them that Gemini Rue/Resonance are better standalone games than Blackwell 1-3. However, Blackwell really benefits from being one continuous story arc with recurring characters and when Deception rolled in (where they finally managed to make a decent length point and click game) they were finally surpassing the standalone games in every respect and benefitting massively from Rosa/Joey's recurring roles. I do get the impression from recent interviews that Dave wants to move towards once and done games in the future, maybe working on the same series for so long has ground him down (I think I also read that tempting new customers to jump in mid-series was a concern which obviously wouldn't affect potential sales of a new IP).

I thought Resonance was pretty good, but I've never gotten the love for Gemini Rue. I was really excited to play it based on everyone's recommendations, but I didn't really like it. The Blackwell games are better by far.

I've always thought the blackwell games were FAR superior to anything wadjeteye published from other devs - with the exception of Primordia, which comes very close.

I don't agree with you here... the first chapters of Blackwell are good, but not THAT good.
And I really, really liked all the Wadjet games... Resonance, Gemini Rue, Primordia are all fantastic adventures.
Personally, I think that Epiphany is the best Wadjet adventure to date, but maybe I'm influenced by the fact that Rosa & Joey at this point are familiar faces.

*shrug* When I got into blackwell the first three games had already been bundled together so it's hard for me to seperate them.

-Resonance totally falls apart at the end. Some great innovation early on, like the escape from the house.
-Gemini Rue I had scripting problems with in the early area, and the combat stuff was a bit meh. Story was fairly interesting though.
-Primordia, as I said, I thought was great. Superb world construction and left me wanting more.

so I just installed Steam on my laptop and I'm ready for some Adventure/Puzzle Games.

My adolescent time was spent between Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest. Than came Myst, 7th Guest, 11th Hour, The Riddle of Master Lu and Syberia.

Any recommendations you can give me?

First recommendation is to close Steam and head on over to GOG.com, as they have a better selection of adventure games.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers
Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon
Beneath a Steel Sky
Broken Age Part 1
Phantasmagoria
Primordia

And of course the King's Quest/Space Quest/Leisure Suit Larry/Police Quest collections if you haven't already played all of them.

Lost Horizon
Monkey Island Special Edition 1 & 2
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Loom
The Dig
I have no mouth, and i must scream
Broken Sword 1 & 2
Blackwell series
Gemini Rue
Primordia
Resonance
The Shivah
Broken Age
Back to the Future: The Game
Sam and Max series
Tales of Monkey Island
Hector
The Walking Dead (too little gameplay to call it a PnC)

Avoid Kings Quest and Space Quest on Steam as they barely work even the recommended XP specs have problems. Get the GOG stuff.

Also as the above poster mentioned, go to GOG and pick up the games they mentioned.

thanks Gez! Guess I have lots to catch up.

My god. Just finished The Samaritan Paradox and that was absolutely superb. Clocked in like 9 hours too. I am so glad I purchased it, very worth the $10, for length and the fun factor.

The puzzles were old-school and made you scratch your head for a while but made you feel amazing when you finally cracked one. The story had lots of turns that even I hadn't seen coming, especially towards the end, my god!

Everyone who likes games like Fate of Atlantis or just any old school PnC game that isn't a walk in the park but holds great fun value, you should totally check this out. I'm still shocked at how much I enjoyed it. I need more now!

Stop making me hyped.

Well if anyone cares Culpa Innata is 80% off on Steam right now. What's peoples opinions on it, worth it? Looked at it back in the day but never bought it.

Memento Mori 2 is now available.

I'd also recommended The Longest Journey/Dreamfall.
Grim Fandango
Still Life
& Gone Home (which isn't exactly a point & click, but a very story-driven experience)

Quoting because this is super cool. Turns out Schafer is a pretty funny guy in interviews and elsewhere, in addition to his writing for games.

It's been years since I've played Day of the Tentacle, but I have nothing but good memories. I don't think I've ever played Maniac Mansion, but I intend to rectify that soon.

all the media as well as the whole broken age documentary has been incredible - along with the sidequests and other awesome backer-related content.

The double pack of Ben There, Dan That! and its sequel Time Gentlemen, Please! is only $0.99 on gog right now

http://www.gog.com/game/time_gentlemen_please_ben_there_dan_that

They are two of the funniest adventure games I've ever played - literally the only ones that have made me laugh out loud in over a decade, it's some of the best comedy writing since the lucasarts days. The puzzles are generally logical, well thought through and fairly tough. I recommend them to any point & click enthusiast.

Easily the funniest adventure games since Lucasarts. It's not even a contest.

It's a shame that the devs aren't very interested in continuing to produce adventure games.

It's the other way around for me, i have played Maniac Manison but never got around to play Day of the Tentacle. I always thought the characters in Maniac Mansion are more of a serious nature and it was a frightening horror Mansion, don't get caught or you die in the basement. So the comical nature of Day of the Tentacle always felt strange to me, but i was also way younger during the Maniac Mansion days so a lot of it flew over my head i guess.

You really should play it, it's one of the finest games even lucasarts ever made, which is saying something.

Does anyone else know where to get 5 Days a Stranger special edition because the main site links to another site for the download and that site no longer exists. I still have the main game, but I was hoping to get the extra goodies if possible.

I know it's a really late response, but I just found these on my external HDD:
5 Days: Special Edition
7 Days: Special Edition
Trilby's Notes: Special Edition
6 Days: Special Edition

It's fun to play those games with commentary (of course, the commentaries contain a lot of spoilers, so be sure to play them without it first), since Yahtzee explains a lot of his design decisions, admit to some bad decisions etc.

Thanks but I found another site that had the special editions already. Haven't started the second game yet but so far I'm loving it.

Just started playing The Longest Journey and just reached Chapter 3. Holy fuck this game is amazing. It almost feels like some RPG at times due to the rich backstory and the two worlds. Its beginning to have the markings of possible being one of my most favorite PnCs ever.

I have the game looking fairly nice due to putting some AA in and scaled up the resolution to my GPU. It holds up pretty well due to the fact it has pre-rendeed backgrounds like the old Final Fantasy games. Not bad for a game that is almost 15 years old.

For any prospective players this is what i did on my AMD card.

I'm hoping to replay TLJ and Dreamfall before Chapters comes out, but I'll probably be lazy and just skip through youtube playthroughs to refresh my memory.

It is amazing indeed, if it werent for one or two fucking ridiculously obtuse puzzles it would probably be my favorite PnC ever!

Dreamfall is just as amazing as well imo!

Dreamfall is great. I didn't mind the lower difficulty or the combat. Awesome storytelling and interesting characters.

Based on the footage we've seen, it doesn't look like Chapters will step up the difficulty or puzzles all that much, but as long as the story delivers people will probably enjoy it. Seems like Ragnar has taken a cue from The Walking Dead to focus on dialogue choices and even include an optional social feature that tells you how your decision compared to your friends' decisions.

After finishing Blackwell Epiphany, my wife and I decided to go back and play through the whole series again, and this time I'm making a point to go through and get as many of the achievements as possible. (Except for the Commentary ones. I don't have THAT much free time.)

I'm catching a bunch of stuff this time around that I never noticed before, little hints in the dialogue at the end of Unbound and the beginning of Convergence that hint toward the plot of Epiphany.

Detective Sam Durkin in Epiphany is the son of the woman you have to save in Unbound. That blew my mind a little bit. I don't think the game ever spells it out, but when I had to call him, I thought, "Wait, Sam Durkin, isn't that the name from...?"

I'll spoiler this one just to be safe:

Jocelyn Contiss = The Countess.
I don't know how I ever missed the similarity with the last name.

It doesn't add that much gametime, really, there's about 2-3 hours of commentary per game.

Having a lot of trouble getting this to run properly. Any advice?
