Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

unflinching 60fps!!! that's how it's done nintendo. Show these so called current gen consoles what a real 60fps is!!

Just how I like it.

Day one. So excited

I have like 12 tabs open with all the different websites with the reviews... and it's 2:22 am omg I need to calm down. So freaking glad is scoring so well. That 10 from Eurogamer tho!!

Holy crap, looks absolutely incredible. Just goes to show, it's not how much power you have, it's what you do with it.

Why oh why did I sell my Wii U back in March?
In March?!?! That's right after Tropical Freeze and more news on this game, why did you?

Anyways, I am very happy to hear the game is getting nice reviews. Anyone having issues loading Screwattack's?

"I do admit that my first impression of Mario Kart 8 was pretty close to a yawn. Mario Kart is one of my favorite franchises, but it's hard to get excited for the same old thing."

more quality writing from Gamespot.

No in-race voice chat killed this for me, but it looks awesome regardless. I hope it does well and that everyone else enjoys it.
Why would you want players screaming at you while playing the game? You get lobby voice chat for those times, but during the game I'd rather enjoy the awesome music and sounds.

Because voice chat has been a multiplayer staple for years now.

Not being able to talk to your friends is just silly.

Why wouldn't you want voice chat in an online game?

If you don't want it, mute everyone. Options are nice.

No score. Title is "Why Can’t Nintendo Stop Ruining Mario Kart?"

Chris Kohler:

Short version: Nintendo has come up with an exciting new way to ruin Mario Kart’s once-amazing Battle Mode.

Long version: Nintendo is pinning all its near-term hopes and dreams for its beleaguered Wii U console to the May 30 release of Mario Kart 8, the latest entry in its perennially popular series of go-kart racers featuring the characters from the Super Mario series. This is the first version of the game to be rendered in resolutions higher than 480p. Its soundtrack is performed in part by a live jazz band. The sights and sounds are glorious, and the core driving gameplay is still perfect. This is not Mario Kart 8′s problem.

I’ve made this point before, back when Nintendo released its iteration of Mario Kart for the original Wii in 2008, but the best feature of previous Mario Kart games was not actually racing around a track, but Battle Mode. In this gameplay mode, which has been present ever since the series debuted on the Super Nintendo, you drive around in an open arena, attempting to out-maneuver other players and kill them off by firing weapons at them. We would spend hours and hours and hours playing this mode only. It’s madcap fun, if done right.

From the other thread...

Here's mine for Gamereactor Spain (9/10):

http://www.gamereactor.es/analisis/93194/Mario+Kart+8/

It comes complete with 2 new direct-feed gameplay clips from 150cc Special Cup and Lightning Cup, second one with an hilarious moment when DK tries to 'stop' an incoming Blue Shell with a lonley banana. Like one sec after this:

Game is a must, with tightest driving yet, best IA and balance, crazy circuits and vehicles design, top presentation and smoothness, greatest humor. Would've loved more circuits and community and customization features though, but I will be playing this the whole year, it seems.

Feel free to ask, etc. And other journos to add me! :)

lol

High scores are to be expected. The other games did great too.

Both Mario Kart Wii and Double Dash (the last two home console Mario Kart games) reviewed quite a bit lower than this. Not that I necessarily disagree with your point as a whole.

I'd completed TF and was moving house. Also own a PS4 and considering a XBO. So just thought it was time to go. But I know I'll double-kick myself when Bayonetta 2 eventually launches :(

Very good reviews. Even reviewers have the right to be unhappy about the battle mode or characters. But overall these are glowing reviews.

Edit: so much love for this game from the Europeans. Well, except for French. :P

Not that the media, fans dictate Nintendo's next moves but this is a perfect storm.

A lot of glowing praise and then harsh criticism.

The door for DLC will always be open until Nintendo shuts it.

9.0? ITS OVER THE WII U IS FINISHED

Just kidding obviously, that's a damn good score. The character selection IS weak, I wish instead of the metal Mario and Peach, they'd gone for Boo and Petey Piranha.

I've only bought Mario Kart DS since Mario Kart 64, and now I read the battle mode sucks. I loved birthday parties growing up with 64's battle mode. Ugh, I was this close to thinking getting a Wii U might one day be a good idea. I didn't enjoy racing, I wanted battle mode.

So far the reviews look good, and the actual racing segment looks pretty good. (Although I'm still sticking to my guns that it still feels iterative.) I'm totally heart broken about Battle Mode just taking place on regular race tracks. Not even altered. Straight up samesies. wtf.
