Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

I cannot wait for this goddamn game.

I might have to pick up this and 3D World at the same time. Man, $120 on 2 games when I'm used to getting a few dozen for that price. Damn you, Steam! Though I did pay $120 for my LE Zelda WW.

My review from Gaming-Universe.de (German), Singleplayer: 7.5, Multiplayer: 9.5

English translation:
Mario Kart 8 is a great fun-racer that shines with an outstanding course design and a masterful driving physic. Sadly the developers didn't think they should adress long-known points of critc. Lone players still have to deal with the lottery that is the blue shell, they still have to wait for a resurrection of the fantastic challenge mode from MKDS. So Mario Kart 8, thanks to numerous well-made new elements and fine-tuning, is the best game of its kind, but still leaves a lot of room for improvement at least in single player mode - is outclassed in some respects by Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Nevertheless: No Nintendo-fan or Wii U-owner should let this game pass, Mario Kart 8 is - with certainty in multiplayer - the best Mario Kart so far.

Therefore for single players good to very good and in multiplayer mode outstanding to milestone.

This is one of those times when the things that are been complained about (voice chat, battle mode, roster etc) mean nothing to me. Looks like a perfect 10 in my books. And easily the best roster in an MK - I wanted the koopalings in it when Super came out all those years ago.

Very good reviews though. It feels to me that about 8 years ago a consensus of 90 wouldn't have been very special for a AAA title of this quality, but these days it's a fabulous result. Well done Nintendo.

And by chance I'm passing through the US in early June so I'll have a chance to pick this, DK and W101 up for my summer gaming. Excited!

3D World is going up for $50 bucks at Amazon, AND don't forget you get a free game of your choice with Mario Kart 8. Make that $110 on 3 first party games from a company not known for cutting down their prices...and all of them more than worth the ticket of admission!

Say what you will about Nintendo, but goddamn at the quality of most of their first party games.

Can't wait to play this with son and my girlfriend.

TY, going to Webm a few clips of them cause this thread is lacking in love.

No score. Title is "Why Can’t Nintendo Stop Ruining Mario Kart?"

Chris Kohler:

Clicked on the link looking to laugh at the bitter old man, then found myself agreeing with him. While I don't ink battle mode is the most important part of mario kart, it is important to me. If they've knackered it that is very disappointing. And the blue shell still grates. I guess I just have to get past the fact that it really isn't about the racing anymore , it's a fighting game on wheels.

Will still have a ton of fun playing local multiplayer (does it allow splitscreen for up to four?)

What is this obsession with battlemode? I never found it that enjoyable in the first place. I can understand some disappointment in the mode but to hinge a whole review score on it seems silly. looking at you Wired

Those scores are great. So glad I pre-ordered the special edition from the Nintendo store.

Got the 30th off and friends staying over for the weekend where we'll order loads of food, and bust out the homebrew booze I've been making for the last few weeks.

Gonna be amazing.

Seeing the negative portions of the reviews revolve around a mode I've never been into (and have never played with my friends) makes me pumped for this game.

jesus f'g christ at those 60fps videos!
THAT'S how its done.

Nintendo's output on triple A software for WiiU is outstanding so far.
can't wait till E3

I'm not really sure there's any good reason to drop something like arena-based Battle Mode, though. It's still popular, why get rid of it? MK7 had similar problems, neglecting to include expected features like Quick Race and Waluigj for no real discernible reason.

It comes across like lazy corner-cutting in games that are otherwise immaculately polished.

They probably ran out of time and did creatively the best thing they could.

Using the regular tracks almost identical as to how they are in the main mode doesn't seem very Nintendo-like for their biggest franchise.

Wow... the levels look great.
I must admit i'm a bit shocked at the amount of jaggies though.. Last couple of Nintendo games had nice clean look to them.

Battle Mode has been a disaster for years.
Downhill since Double Dash. If anything, it took them way too long to get rid of it.

Sounds like the biggest gameplay problem is the mode I've barely ever played. Should be an awesome game overall for me.
Same here.

While it's legitimate to mark the game down for an ill thought out multiplayer mode, I couldn't care less about battle mode. It never did anything for me in previous MK games, and I don't mine if they botched it up.

Great scores so far!

The DS Balloon Battle was incredible. Lies detected.

I didn't mind the 7 one, but I will admit to never bothering with the Wii battle mode. Still, in games like these you want more options, not less.

OMG that 60 FPS. So buttery. So good....

Nintendo does what others don't. Just another example how racing games need 60 FPS. Just...LOOK!

I was holding out for Bayonetta 2 to pick up a Wii U but this bundle will make it TOUGH.
