Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

Even if they add actual arenas, the mode is always on a timer and if you get taken out, you continue playing as a ghost that can get items and interact with everyone else.

I think it's beyond salvation.

Ouch. MK64 is the only Mario Kart game I've ever played, and the battle mode is one reason my friends and I keep going back to it. It's hard to imagine MK8's battle mode not topping it!

When I see Electrodrome all I can think of is this

Strange. The gamespot review Sounds like the opposite.

Yeah, I guess it does. I suppose if attack items are equally nerfed, then it could balance out. I'm not quite sure who to trust. Guess I'll have to wait and find out for myself.

Chris Kohler's Wired review/article is pretty worrying. Apparently they nerfed the first place position even harder than it already was so that even red shells are rarely defensible since you can only hold one item at a time and they diluted the pool by adding the chance of picking up a useless coin from an item box.

And it sounds like the horn is too rare to ever rely on, and since it's only one item at a time now, you're probably going to waste it on a red shell before you even see the blue shell anyway.

But yeah, the other reviews all seem to agree the presentation is great, the controls/physics are improved, and the tracks are pretty cool, so at least there's that.

Defense in Mario Kart badly needed a nerf. You have enough advantages in first place anyway, being able to constantly horde defensive items was ridiculous. This is one of the changes that I'm most excited about.

Should also reduce the amount of blue shells needed to keep races close from first to last, which was previously a silly amount. 2nd and 3rd place should be the ones attacking 1st, but in past MKs 2nd and 3rd had all their attacks defended by a barrage of bannanas, triple bannanas, green shells etc, while 8th-12th had the only hope of breaking through 1st's defence - with a blue shell. That wasn't good design.

Is this going to be better then Sonic All Star Racing Transformed. The current king of Kart games.

Can't believe that terrible game has so many fans. Got it for free on PS+ and I still paid too much for it.

I think Nintendo just doesn't really want people playing battle mode. They don't want it to be the focus, but they don't want reviews screaming 'it lost a feature!'. They certainly put no effort into it.

As someone who thought battle mode was always total crap and that real MK is racing on a track, well I agree with them. But if you're going to put it in there you need to do it right, and they haven't done that which is disappointing.

The lack of a functional battle mode is typical Nintendo, there's always one or two things missing for no reason from a great package that breaks it. You dutifully wait until the next game thinking the technology will get cheap enough to implement proper netcode or HD graphics, and then you finally get both and you get a gimped battle mode.

Nintendo's battle mode history is pretty baffling. It is so damn easy to make a good Mario Kart battle mode, it practically makes itself once you approach it with the correct perspective.

I still want to try this game out. All these WebMs aren't really making me hopeful for the game though. The graphics look cool, but it just looks like the same super wide tracks and barely-there turns that have been plaguing the series for a long time.

Balloon battle mode on the SNES was the bomb.

I'm sure if fans want it enough, they'll take the time to add a "classic" mode with a square arena. It's couch co-op gold.

Them gamersyde 60fps videos look great. Thats the way this game needs to be seen.

I love the overall look to this game. It looks like something new.

yes. It would indeed be a struggle to port/balance/choose from all the options now available in the racing mode.

you crazy. CRAZY. MK64 battle mode was the gift of the Gods. Block Fort with friends was synonymous with frenzied chases, sharp turns, bananas treacherous dumps and runs to the corners when the red shells were coming. and that Star...I felt like Godzilla on a kart when I had it.

I hear its not 60fps on consoles, I have it on the PC and it looks/plays amazingly well. I tried it on the Vita and it was definitely not as playable. It definitely filled a void between Mario Kart Wii and now Mario Kart 8, it has charm, character and lots of Sega fan service. The weapons while not very imaginative are very balanced and effective and the transitions in play style between air, land and sea make for some interesting gameplay.

It is anything but terrible.

*shrug*

It's one of my favorite kart racers. I enjoyed it much more than any Mario Kart since the original.

ya - we need the old battle mode :( i have seen the "new" one in the ign review today ... wtf

I had to stop watching the Gamespot review when he complained that there were too many parts for the karts.

Thats the thing with Nintendo games. They make so many great ones from the same franchise, that people latch on to the ideas found in one or the other. So its hard to please everyone.

Just look at the Zelda community..

Another quality Nintendo game and WiiU exclusive. Objectively, the lineup for the console is looking great right now. Bummer, that MK8 is the only game I'm really interested in. :(

This. It's not a bad game by even the longest of stretches. Not Mario Kart good, but then few things are.

Reviews are right about where I expected. Still, it's good to have the reassurance.

The game looks so ridiculously good though. Still can't believe I'll be getting this and then Pikmin 3 for free. 30th can't come soon enough.

So even with obvious flaws the game is still in the 9/10 territory.

If Nintendo prepped this game for patches and DLC they could really help solidify it as the best Mario Kart.

SASRT is a good game. It has a bad framerate (on console), but it has a very good single player campaign. Some tracks are mediocre and the multiplayer was not that fun for me, but the game overall is good.

What they've done to battle mode is a shame.

... then I realize they haven't done it right since MK64 and I get over it.

Yep. It's almost painful to imagine the possibilities. I'm getting the impression Nintendo has neglected battle mode for awhile, though - has MK64's ever been topped?
SNES Battle Mode was superior.

I don't think Gamatrailers can make a Wii U review without mentioning lackluster sales or gimmick at least once. ^^

My personal favorite was Mario Kart DS. Haven't played 7, so no clue if it topped there. N64 is really hard to top however.

Ok I have checked out some reviews now, still don't get why this doesn't score higher. The negatives that pop up are related to extra modes and lack of online features, but the core seems rock solid. It's annoying to pick kart parts? Nabbit isn't playable? Some mode from MK DS is missing? These small details shouldn't affect scores.

Yeah, pretty much.

However, as much as Nintendo gonna Nintendo, they HAVE to know how much people loved 64's Battle Mode.

In fact, they kind of brought back 64's rules, so they do but...

yeah
