Forgive me if this has already been done , I did try searching. I see a lot of varying views about the Souls series with 3 games out, and now that DS2 has been around a little while people should've had enough time to get a decent opinion of where it stands. As with all game series, there is only 'amazing' to 'shit' and I think this needs to be settled or at least see what the general consensus is, if there even is one I mean.

So what basis do we rank them? That's a good question, it would be easy to just go with your gut overall instinct and say what you feel. Feel free. It's just that me and my friend debated on grounds like BEST EXPERIENCE vs BEST GAME. Basically if you just give an order I'll assume it's just the general overall feeling, otherwise it's helpful if you give a simple explanation or elaborate with visible rankings. Feel free to rank in multiple categories if you feel that paints a better picture I guess, whatever is important for you.

I haven't played Demon's in about 4 years so my own ordering is a little unclear, I do have a general idea though. Might be a good idea to spoiler tag any DS2 stuff that's super secret. Try to avoid putting games on equal ranks, but feel free to do it if you like. If you feel the spiritual predecessors e.g. Kings Field belong in your list, you may do so.

Please try to provide reasons for your listings so this can be more of a discussion than a list thread.

I liked DS1. Wasn't a fan of the "Mario-select-a-world-style" of Demon's Souls. Even guides would describe zones as 3-2 or 4-1, like I was playing a Mario game. The way the zones intertwined made Dark Souls a joy to explore instead of a "level" with a beginning and end.

Demon's Souls = Dark Souls = Dark Souls II

Best three games of the gen, each has their own strengths but equally amazing. If I had to pick, Demon's just because it was the first and completely blew me away having never seen anything like it before.

Dark Souls > Demon's Souls > Dark Souls 2

Demon's Soul still had some dumb farming and just feels outdated in terms of mechanics compared to Dark Souls, but I feel that DeS boss fights and art design is superior to DaS2 which hasn't a single compelling armor

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls II

Seems to be the general consensus from everything I've ever seen. That said, I can certainly understand why someone would like Dark Souls better than Demon's Souls. I'd disagree, but I'd understand.

Edit: I'm actually surprised at the amount of disagreement.

For me it's Dark Souls II = Dark Souls > Demon's Souls. I tend to lead towards DkSII being my favorite but it honestly just depends on my mood.

Well I'm currently playing through Demon's Souls right now. And at this point, I'd put Dark Souls 1 and Demon's Souls in that order with Dark Souls 2 quite a bit behind. Demon's Souls started the franchise so it has a lot to give it credit for (plus some cool stage designs) but Dark Souls just feels more immersive, compelling and even more challenging. Dark Souls 2, however, just feels like a watered-down version of Dark Souls with very little added or changed for massive improvement, and weaker stage and enemy designs overall.

Or another way: Dark Souls is a 9, Demon's Souls an 8.5, and Dark Souls 2 a 7.

No question in my mind. Dark > Demon's > Dark 2.

But a complicated issue, honestly, because Dark 2 did have improvements in some areas over the other games. But -- looking at it as a whole game, Dark 2 lacks the vision and, er, "soul" of the others.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Demon's Souls is still the most superior game, and last gens best game.

My opinions of Dark Souls (1) is pretty known and old by this date, but the game is great up until you reach the 50%> part. Then it becomes an intern piece of shit game.

Dark Souls 2 is an utter shit fest on PS3 (iliterally the worst game I've ever played on PS3) however it is a REALLY great game on PC. Better than DkS(1) but obviously worse than Demon's Souls.

So basically: Demon's Souls >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dark Souls 2 >>>>>>> Dark Souls 1

For me:

Dark Souls 2 > Demon's Souls > Dark Souls

Why? I really enjoyed DaS2 and DeS pretty much the entire way through them. I feel Dark2 is a bit more fair and employs superior online features to Demon, so I'm giving it the edge. But both have extremely memorable areas and bosses.

Dark Souls felt like it was designed to be excrutiatingly hard at the expense of keeping it fun to actually play. Playing it was more of a chore as I progressed deeper into the game, and I believe it suffered a lot from bad design choices with leveling and progression. As an example, I cheated my ass off and did that stone dragon trick to reach something like level 900. You'd think I'd be able to steamroll the game at that point, but it made almost no difference at all to gain several hundred levels. Something is definitely broken there. Also, I really hated some of the settings and the level design. Lost Izalith was the reason I stopped playing the game. I thought it was just terrible for the sake of being terrible and nothing else. In short, fuck Dark Souls 1.

Haven't played much of Demon Souls since I have a 360 and my friend with a PS3 is busy so:

1. Dark Souls 2
2. Dark Souls 1

I like the weapon variety, plot, lore, mobs, environments, progression and pacing, weapon balancing, and stat scaling a lot more in Dark Souls 2.

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls II

1 and done

Actually went and played some Demon's Souls after countless hours with the sequels and years in between, was expecting it to be shittier than the other two, rose-tint and all that, but instead found the combat much tighter (hit boxes that are spot-on, remember that guys?) and the graphics surprisingly good.

Yeah, I've played them all to death. I'd have to go with Dark Souls > Demon's > Dark Souls 2.

Demon's had some of the best design and atmosphere. Dark Souls Executed everything Better. Dark Souls 2 is still an awesome game but it feels a little. *ahem* hollow.

I think this is hard to answer with one list:

In terms of bosses:

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls II

In terms of playability and refinement:

Dark Souls II > Dark Souls > Demon's Souls

However, if I really had to choose I would pick:

Dark Souls > Demon's Souls > Dark Souls II

None of them are bad games by any means in my opinion. Even though DSII is the last for me, it doesn't stop it from being leaps and bounds better than most games that are released.

Demon's == Dark1 > Dark2

But I love them like they are all my children. It's just that by my third I was so used to having kids that it was more routine but no less rewarding.

Dark Souls PTDE >> Demons Souls > Dark Souls 2

There's just so many things wrong with DS2 even though it does a lot of things better than the first two. The hitboxes are horrible, the online is beyond horrible and soul memory ruins the longevity of the game. I'm already done with the game and it's barely been two months.

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls II

wow, dat first reply.

edit:
demon's souls is my favorite because the world, lore, and characters and most memorable to me. wax eyed maiden is the greatest :) also, at the time, it was this new thing that came outta nowhere, and the new online integration that everyione's copying these days felt so original and satisfying. not to mention the challenging, yet rewarding gameplay.
dark souls comes next because some of the wow factor and frehsness of demon's has been lost, and the world and characters have changed. i would have loved to continue in the demon's souls world/lore.
dark souls 2 is last cuz there are too many glitches imo. Like, you will die and it will be the game's fault not your own, thats when a game becomes frustrating versus challenging.

"FIRST POST GETS IT, THREAD DONE" responses are the worst. This is a discussion, not a circle jerk over having the same taste.

Each one has its good and bad points.

In terms of atmosphere:

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls 2.

In terms of game mechanics:

Dark Souls > Dark Souls 2 > Demon's Souls.

but really

Shadow Tower Abyss > King's Field IV > Dark Souls > Demon's Souls > Dark Souls II > everything else

I was going to mention this but I didn't think anyone would actually do it. I'll update the OP.

PS. In the other franchise Dark Souls > Dark Souls II but both missed what made Demon's Souls amazing.

Demon's Souls is extremely rough these days after Dark Souls 1, but is still a really good experience.

I'd have to say Dark Souls>Demon's Souls>Dark Souls II.

The weird issue for me is that I can look at Dark Souls and Demon's Souls and appreciate their advantages over Dark Souls II (such as atmosphere, world cohesion, and boss variety) yet I simply had the most fun playing Dark Souls II. The game was just a blast and it felt more consistent than either of the previous two games in that regard.

And a short bursts of +'s and -'s.

Demon's Souls
+ Bosses are perfectly melee/caster-balanced
+ Consistent map design
+ Music
+ The best difficulty balance out of the three
+ Hub layout

- PvP is shit
- Framerate is shit in 2-x and some of 5-x

Dark Souls
+ Everything up until 50%>
+ Music is the best out of the three

- Everything after 50%>
- Blighttown framerate
- Open world resulted in you seeing unfinished maps early on
- PvP is still shit

Dark Souls 2
+ Graphics and 60fps
+ PvP is the best out of the three, and overall REALLY good
+ Open world was much better this time around
+ Bonfire Ascetic
+ Consistent level of "fun" throughout the entirety of the game

- Music is the worst out of the three
- Levels become extremely insignificant very early on
- Stat balancing

Perfect timing! I was just editing my post before realizing I might as well just make a new post about it :p

Dark Souls has the best world, Dark Souls 2 has the most content, Demon's Souls doesn't do anything best but was still a great game.

This is actually where the dispute between myself and a friend came from to the point where we had to talk about separate orderings.

I've tried to post something several times, but keep going back and changing it. So difficult. It's like choosing between children.

This is the true answer.

Demons Souls > Dark Souls > Dark Souls 2

Just loved the Nexus hub of Demons Souls, the different and varied environments that each Archstone threw you into, the atmosphere of the Tower of Latria, the set-pieces, the world tendency system, etc.

I freakin loved the massive bridge that you had to run across while avoiding the dragon flying around the Castle. Going deep into the caverns and finding your way through the maze of caves in World 2. The ghostly environment of World 4. The utter nightmare that was World 5.

It was all so varied and well put together. I also loved the Tendency system and trying to put together that " perfect " run to where you could unlock the Archdemon in each of the worlds to try and kill to get a super rare item.

Demons was just so well put together man, so good.

Might be because I played Dark Souls before Demons Souls, and I prefer Dark's lore and mechanics over Demons.

They're all relatively similar and made interesting/bizarre leaps forward/backwards as they progressed, but I think the general consensus of demon - dark - dark 2 is a result of us knowing what the gimmick of the series is. There aren't as many surprises so our enjoyment diminishes

Demon's Souls > Dark Souls >> Dark Souls II

Demon's has best atmosphere, environments and boss fights. Dark Souls has a lot of improvements though but many sacrifices too.

I really liked that Faith players in Demon's were anti-mages, with a focus on health regen rather than just a different type of mage.

I contest that this is the general consensus, just look at the replies in this very thread. :D
